Barcelona tell Arsenal to forget about signing David Villa in January

Barcelona's president Sandro Rosell has warned Arsenal that they can forget about signing David Villa, who played 24 minutes as a substitute in the 4-0 win over Espanyol last Saturday, during the January transfer window.

The Gunners are expected to strengthen their options up front, having offloaded the misfit Marouane Chamakh on a six-month loan deal to West Ham.

Rosell, however, maintains that the 31-year-old Villa, signed in a £31m deal from Valencia in 2010, is going nowhere. "I completely rule out the transfer of Villa during the winter market," he said to the Catalan radio station RAC1. "He is ours and we need him, there is a lot of the season left."

Arsenal are also reported to be interested in Atlético Madrid's Adrian López, while Arsène Wenger is said to be looking at further midfield options, with Anderlecht's Argentinian Lucas Biglia said to be one of them.

São Paulo, meanwhile, are confident they can turn Denílson's loan move into a permanent transfer.

Arsenal now head into a run of fixtures which could define their season. Following the 2-2 draw at Swansea in the FA Cup, they face a replay next week, just a few days after the champions Manchester City visit the Emirates. They then travel to Chelsea on 20 January before tackling West Ham in the rearranged Boxing Day fixture, which is followed by a possible FA Cup fourth-round tie at Brighton ahead of the visit of Liverpool.

Per Mertesacker, Arsenal's German defender, feels the Gunners can meet their busy schedule head on, moreover. "We are in a good way but we have to keep our focus on these games [against Manchester City and Chelsea] and the knockout stages of the Champions League," he said. "We have to win those games now.

"We are always looking to win something and we can achieve something with this group. We have a lively group so our thoughts are now on the next match. That is the most important thing for us, not what's going to happen in May.

"We have a few targets in our team that are possible this year. We won't talk about it, we'll just see what happens in the next few important weeks on the pitch."

Theo Walcott's Arsenal contract saga is finally set to end – but only for 18 months.

Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal Walcott’s new contract will only run for three-and-a-half years, which has caused huge frustration and concern inside Arsenal.

Walcott is close to signing a new £100,000-a-week deal that will make him Arsenal’s highest-paid player and earn him a £2.5million loyalty bonus.

It means the Gunners will have to ­re-open contract negotiations with Walcott in just 18 months, with two years remaining on the new deal.

The club have made an internal vow to renegotiate the contracts of players they want to keep with two years remaining, after seeing Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie run down their deals to quit the ­Emirates.

The club were desperate to tie Walcott to a minimum four-and-a-half-year contract, but were forced to make the concession after six months of stand-offs threatened to result in him leaving for nothing.

Walcott’s new contract means ­Arsenal will no longer risk ­losing the 23-year-old on a free transfer and means they could put a £25million price tag on his head if he ­refuses to renegotiate in 18 months.

The England international has always ­said he wants to stay, despite ­interest from ­Manchester United, City, ­Chelsea and Liverpool.

Asked what Walcott signing a new deal will mean, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger replied: “It would at least give a positive message out for us, to our fans who love the club. The way is not necessarily the exit.”

Menadžer Arsenala Arsen Venger kritikovao je sudiju Martina Etkinsona da nije bio u pravu kada je pokazao na belu tačku u 16. minutu, nakon čega je Frenk Lampard povisio na 2:0 i doneo tri boda Čelsiju.

"Prvo poluvreme nismo odigrali na našem uobičajenom nivou, ostavili smo im mnogo prostora da igraju. Imali smo prvi šansu, fantastičnu, ali smo promašili. Mislim da je Kokelan bio fauliran pre njihovog gola i nisam baš siguran da li je bio penal za 2:0. Sa klupe nisam najbolje video, ali su mi rekli ljudi koji su gledali na televiziji da nije bio penal", bio je ljut Venger nakon poraza od 2:1 u londonskom derbiju.
 
Francuski strateg smatra da su njegovi puleni mogli do remija i žali što napadači bolje nisu pratili igru Vilšera.
 
"Neke stvari smo promenili u pauzi i zaigrali drugačije u nastavku. Gurnuli smo Čelsi do ivice, ali nismo uspeli da izjednačimo. Nismo dovoljno koristili kornere i centaršuteve iz prekida. Vilšer je imao taj završni pas i pravio je razliku, kompletan je igrač", kao da se jadao trener "tobdžija".
