iPhone Dev Team Jailbreaks iPhone 2.2 Firmware Before Official Release



The iPhone Dev Team has done it again. This time, through some sort of voodoo mind-melding technique, they have actually announced that they have successfully jailbroken 2.2… Before the iPhone 2.2 firmware has even been released.

If you’re puzzled by this, don’t worry. I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation. My best guess would be that they simply got their hands on the 2.2 beta that was seeded to developers. They worked on that version and came up with the jailbreak from there. OR, perhaps a member of the dev team is actually an insider Apple employee that has unlimited access to iPhone firmware development… But, um, I kind of doubt that!

iPhone gets external keyboard!



Settle down there, sport. We know you’ve been waiting forever for someone to finally bring an external QWERTY keyboard solution to the iPhone and iPhone 3G. And, now that one intrepid iPhone jailbreak developer has developed his own home-grown external iPhone keyboard, that wait is over… almost.

The jailbroken iPhone you see here is connected via custom-hacked iPhone cable to work with what seems to be an old external Palm keyboard. Thanks to some creative coding, this jailbroken iPhone 3G is capable of logging keyboard inputs and displays the input on the display.

At the moment, the external keyboard solution isn’t usable in any real sense of the word. The keyboard can’t be used to enter text in any application (jailbroken or official), so it’s more of a proof of concept at this point.

Still, the hack gives us iPhone users hope that there will one day be wired or wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard solution for jailbroken iPhones and iPhone 3Gs. The mobile blogger in us is dying in anticipation!

JD Power: iPhone is tops among business users

When the iPhone launched, the world scoffed at the first-ever Apple mobile phone’s lack of physical keyboard or any real enterprise support. Business users around the world brushed aside the iPhone as a casual fad that would never amount to any real significance in the mobile space.

Lo and behold, the iPhone 3G brought serious enterprise support and a sleek, refreshed design, giving the enterprise segment something to talk about. And, with the iPhone OS offering unparalleled eye-appeal and an intuitive user interface, the iPhone has fast become a business user’s top-choice.

So agrees J.D. Power & Associates and their 2008 Business Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study. The new study, from the people that just about invented the “customer satisfaction survey,” gives the iPhone top honors when it comes to customer satisfaction in the enterprise segment.


New JD Power study puts Apple at top of enterprise satisfaction list

The survey asked users to rate enterprise handset manufacturers on a 1,000 point scale that measured satisfaction in categories like “ease of operation,” “operating system,” “physical design,” “handset features” and “battery aspects.” Of all manufacturers surveyed, Apple managed to score a class-leading 778 points - mostly for the iPhone’s ease of use, design, and features.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion scored a 703, giving it the No. 2 spot. Samsung eeked out a respectable 701 points, netting it a third place finish, while Palm lagged behind all others with their Treo lineup of smartphones scoring a meager 644 points.

Enterprise users cited Internet capability, email access, design, Bluetooth functions, and keyboard format as the most significant factors in deciding which smartphone was the best fit for their company.

The iPhone and iPhone 3G have their fair share of problems. But, both handsets’ strengths lie in their intuitive multi-touch interface and a snazzy design aesthetic that has apparently captured the minds of both consumers and business users alike. Now, all we need is a removable external keyboard.

 FourTrack App For Music Lovers



Audio geeks and songwriters who own an iPhone or iPod touch will be thrilled to play with FourTrack - an application that records, mixes and plays up to four tracks. While this isn't going to take the place of your main recording setup anytime soon, it is highly portable and does a casual enough job seriously to warrant a serious consideration. The $10 price tag might be 10 times more than those lightweight iPhone apps, but at least the price is justified, thanks to its rudimentary, four-track-like functionality. Both recording and mixing procedures are a snap, and recording length depends on how much empty space you have left inside. Each track will also be stored as a separate, mono, 44.1 kHz WAV file that can then be transferred over to a computer via Wi-Fi, doing away with the need for pesky cables.

Official AT&T iPhone tethering solution coming soon, says AT&T CEO


iPhone 3G tether via Bluetooth

While it’s nothing like a solid (or even vague) launch window, AT&T’s CEO Ralph De La Vega was quoted as saying that AT&T would be offering an official iPhone tethering solution “soon.”

While unofficial iPhone tethering solutions have been available on jailbroken iPhones for some time now, and there was even an official iPhone tethering application briefly available through the AppStore, AT&T has yet to officially support data-tethering for the iPhone.

For the uninitiated, “tethering” is the process that allows you to use your mobile phone’s data connection (preferrably 3G) on your laptop (or even desktop, if that’s your kind of thing). By tethering your handset to your computer, you are basically using your cellphone as a wireless modem.

AT&T has been rumored to be holding off on an official iPhone tethering solution due to the disproportionate 3G data traffic passing through iPhone 3G handsets. This subset of AT&T’s 3G devices has reportedly been overloading the US wireless carrier’s data network, leading to slow data speeds. AT&T is thought to be in the process of shoring up their 3G network to handle the additional data-load that’s likely to accompany any iPhone tethering solution.

We’re not sure just how “soon” AT&T will be offering their iPhone tethering plan, so it might be prudent to file this one under “rumor.” For what it’s worth, MacRumors is reporting that the next iPhone firmware revision, iPhone 2.2 OS, will include built-in support for iPhone tethering.

iPhone 2.2 screenshots leaked, show new App store interface and Podcast support



While the rest of us wait around for the official release, some lucky Devs have tossed caution to the wind and ignored the binding clauses of their NDA to leak some screenshots of the upcoming iPhone 2.2. firmware update to the world. Among the goodies include a look at a redesign of the App Store to make it a bit more intuitive. The big news, however, is the addition of a Podcast tab to the iTunes store. Providing the ability to download and subscribe to podcasts on the go should mark a significant feature addition, and even better yet it appears that any podcast under 10MB will be available over the 3G network. Similar to the App store, files exceeding the 10MB limit will only be offered over Wi-Fi, but given the impressive strain on AT&T’s data network, we can’t say we’re surprised. As always, this is subject to change before official release, but the shots look polished enough that we’re confident in getting our hopes up for the final iteration.
