New hack allows five columns on iPhone Springboard



There’s a new interesting hack for the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone, which enables five icons displayed in a single row on the iPhone/iPod Touch’s homescreen. The so called Five-Column Springboard is not available at the moment of this writing (or at least I’ve missed it), but it should hit Cydia and Installer.app in the near future. Yap, you’ll need to have your iPhone jailbroken in order to have five-icons-per-row singing on your homescreen.

Apple patents adaptive volume controls based on environment, not quality of your music



Ever walk through a crowd with your headphones on, only to find your music drowned out by the uproar? A recent Apple patent proposes dynamic volume adjustment based on your local surroundings. According to the filing, a sound sensor would be used to detect ambient noise and adapt accordingly. It says user volume controls are accounted for, so passing by a construction site likely won't cause your jams to be pumped up to an ear-shattering 11. Although it sounds more likely than some of the company's other patents, don't get your hopes up for seeing this any time soon. Hit up the read link for more details.

iPhone finds use in treating stuttering at Hollins Communications Research Institute

Who says Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s iPhone is just for entertainment? Scientists at Hollins Communications Research Institute (HCRI) have completed successful trials using the iPhone as a stuttering therapy tool to “enhance the transfer of new fluency skills from the clinical setting into real-life situations.”



From the official release:

    The iPhone device was programmed at HCRI with a sophisticated voice monitoring system that evaluates and scores speech behaviors taught during stuttering therapy. When clients use the device during training in outside situations, such as in a shopping mall, restaurant or business setting, fluency measurements for each utterance are displayed on the iPhone screen. Having this data immediately available to stuttering therapy program participants makes speech practice more effective and helps improve the speed with which fluency results are achieved.

    In addition, the iPhone records every speech sample in an onboard file for later transmission to HCRI. This information enables the institute’s therapists to provide more detailed and precise training to clients, as they learn to apply new speech capabilities in everyday situations.


The iPhone has exceeded expectations during trials with client scores in outside trials being similar to those made in the clinical environment. As a result, Apple’s handset will become a regular component of HCRI’s stuttering treatment during the week of January 26, 2009…

Video: Bluetooth File Transfers on a Jailbroken iPhone 3G via iBluetooth



If you’ve been waiting for the ability to do bluetooth file transfers with your iPhone, I’ve got some cool news for you this morning. No, this isn’t a feature built-in to a new Firmware from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), this is a very unofficial 3rd party application available via Cydia. To use it, you’re going to need a jailbroken iPhone 3G (of course). Called iBluetooth (from iSpazio) . First off in this video, you will see a bluetooth connection between a desktop Mac and iPhone being established. Second, a connection between an iPhone and Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) K550i. Very cool.

More importantly to me however… I’m still waiting for Copy/Paste functionality to hit the iPhone via the App Store or even better a Firmware update from Apple. Fingers crossed and waiting patiently.

iPhone firmware update 2.2.1 brings minor stability improvements



No copy and paste here, move along everyone! What you can expect in the new, just-released 2.2.1 software update for the iPhone is "improved general stability of Safari" -- always encouraging -- and a fix for saved Mail images not showing up just right in the camera roll. It's like Christmas in January!

Apple goes live with iPhone 2.2.1 OS - iPhone firmware hits v2.2.1

okay, it took us by surprise, too.

Apple has today released their latest iPhone OS update that takes your iPhone 2.2 OS all the way up to iPhone 2.2.1 OS. The new iPhone firmware version brings little more than incremental updates and fixes to iPhone and iPhone 3G users, but if iPhone Safari stability and a reliable Camera Roll are important to you, the iPhone OS v2.2.1 might be something you want to look into.

Keep in mind that Apple loves releasing updates to its iPhone OS in the cat-and-mouse game that has Apple tracking down iPhone hackers’ exploits and closing those security holes. This latest update may kill the current jailbreak solution provided by PwnageTool and QuickPWN, and the iPhone Dev Team warns against updating until they’ve looked into and tested the iPhone 2.2.1 OS. Also, the new iPhone OS v2.2.1 may close the security hole that allows non-jailbroken iPhones to use Emoji icons.



Do what you will, but we’d recommend that anyone with a jailbroken iPhone wait for confirmation that it’s safe to update. If you could care less about jailbreaking your iPhone, go ahead and connect it to your computer and update via iTunes.
