Apple plans to integrate iPhone Mapping and Calendar apps

We told you that Apple is pretty serious about the mobile navigation feature on it’s iPhone.

They have already patented most of the  mapping and navigation features used currently on their handsets Mapping app.

Well, that patent app was more or less about the past. But as we all know Steve Jobs likes to look into the future, not the past. So do we.

And we recently got a glimpse what a future iPhone firmware upgrades might bring to your navigation app - a tight integration with your calendar app and address book.

At least that’s what Apple describes in a patent application named “Integrated calendar and map applications in a mobile device“.

The way it works is pretty obvious.

You enter your scheduling data - meetings, appointments, etc; to your calendar app. If the person’s name you are meeting with is in your address book,  software automatically pre-fills you calendar entry from there. If physical address information is available, it then automatically associates this data with the location on the map.

Of course, you can  enter the location info manually as well. E.g. when you are meeting someone for lunch in a cafe. You fill in cafe name and then the  iPhone finds it’s location on the map and let’s you associate it with the meeting info.

But that’s only a beginning.

With all the data on your device and already cross referenced, many new capabilities to make your life easier open up.

If you have several meetings in different places scheduled throughout the day, your iPhone can map out the best route to each meeting. Using routing and traffic info it can even advice on how much time you will need to get there.

Your iPhone can also monitor your location, and ping you that you have to leave for the next meeting now, if you don’t want to be late. Or, if you are stuck in traffic and gonna be late anyway, it will prompt you to send a pre-selected message with a single touch.

For years I’ve been reading about how the new mobile devices will start  acting like smart personal assistants for us. You know - buying tickets and groceries, scheduling meetings, suggesting the nearest public loo when I’m in a pinch… But years go by and they never seem to get there.

Well, when implemented, this integration between Mapping and Calendar apps might make the iPhone the first mobile device that actually can act smart on itself  and make my life easier  at least in some cases.

If you’d like to read full patent app, you can download it here (*.pdf, 2.3 MB).

iPhone nano now rumored for June, Unicorn delayed again until September

Ready for more iPhone nano rumors? Good, because apparently the Chinese trade paper Economic Daily News is now reporting that Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC) will be handling chip manufacturing for a low-cost device being referred to as... you guessed it: the iPhone nano. While the paper has a fairly good reputation, it is filtered through the lens of DigiTimes on our end, so as usual, take it with the required grain of salt. Still, the source is calling a June launch of the handset on the heels of an order for the components in March. The time frame is reasonable enough, and if history is any lesson here, Apple loves to intro iPhones in the Summer. Given that China has yet to see a deal for the iPhone proper, and a lower-cost entry may be perfectly tuned for vast Asian markets, the nano could gather in a whole new fold of users (and the smaller screen would be less of an issue given the need for character recognition). That theory falls in line with statements from analysts, though as always, putting too much stock in any of this speculation could be hazardous to your health. Just ask Steve Jobs.

Apple approves 3rd party web browsers for iPhone in the App Store

After what seemed like ages, Apple has finally approved the use of third-party web browsers for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch. And there isn’t just one. There are at least four third-party web browsers for the iPhone available for download at the App Store as of this time’s writing.

One of the newly approved third-party iPhone web browsers is the Edge Browser (pictured below), which offers a full screen view of web pages to maximize the iPhone’s 3.5-inch display. It looks great, and what’s more, anyone can download it for free.

Others web browsers are also available for download for a fee, like WebMate ($0.99), which takes pride in offering tabbed browsing, and Incognito ($0.99) which offers untraceable browsing.

This is great news for the iPhone development community, but the question is, when will we see the third-party web browsers that we have all been waiting for? I’m talking about mobile Firefox and Opera, of course. And if Google can create a Chrome-like browser for the iPhone, too, then all the better. Throw in mobile IE in there, even, why don’t you?

Previously, it looked like seeing all those heavy-duty mobile browsers on the iPhone was impossible. Well, obviously, not any more. Unless this–approving third-party web browsers for the iPhone–is some kind of mistake on Apple’s part, which I really hope it isn’t.

CES: CoPilot Live demoed on Apple iPhone, T-Mobile G1

During the CES, Alk has demoed its popular navigation software, CoPilot Live, on the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone and T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) G1. The latter won’t be a problem - Android Market is as open as humanly possible. Apple AppStore is a different beast, though. Cupertino boys still don’t allow for any GPS navigation application with directions. So why on Earth Alk prepared a version of its application for the iPhone. Do they know something we don’t? Are they hoping Apple will flip-flop? What’s going on here?

Anyway, we don’t have any release dates for the Android version, but since they’ve shown us pretty complete product, guess they’re only waiting for Google (NSDQ: GOOG) to enabled paid apps in the Android Market…

The iPhone Nano Saga Continues: 4GB Model Rumored

I have a feeling the iPhone Nano rumors are simply going to get more and more common as time goes on, and information leaks. Today, more news has come out that is hinting at a 4GB iPhone model to be released… such a model would no doubt be an ‘iPhone Nano’. Or would it?

The smaller, more affordable and cheaper-to-build model would help Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) out during these rough economic times. The iPhone Nano would be cheaper to build, and for the end consumer, cheaper to buy. Sounds like a pretty good win/win to me. Financial expert Maynard UM of UBS has commented that Apple is working on such a device to help boost sales.

All of that said, this 4GB model could be a full-size iPhone as well, and not the rumored iPhone Nano. Perhaps we’ll get both… one… or neither. Who really knows. All I do know is Apple is due to introduce/launch something new in their iPhone lineup, and a cheaper more affordable device sounds like it could be the ticket to increase overall sales, boost stock prices… and make shareholders happy. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

Cycorder: video recorder

Cycorder does MJPEG compression:
the same as that used by most point and shoot digital cameras that also happen to support recording video.
Video files are recorded at 384x288, a 4x3 (television) aspect ratio.
Quality is noticeably higher than that of iPhone Video Recorder
(which uses a very lossy compression algorithm at a low framerate in order to obtain its small video sizes).

Skype working on its iPhone app?

Guess we were expecting to see Skype going all native on the iPhone. This is not to say you can’t make and take Skype calls on the iPhone already — apps like Fring and Truphone are there to help — but it’s kinda expected to see the popular VoIP IM client release its own app for the platform, just like they did for Windows Mobile and now Android.

Anyway, according to Denver Post, Skype’s COO Scott Durschlag said their iPhone app is still under development, with engineers working on cutting the amount of power it consumes. He also added that the iPhone app is “not far behind” the newly released Skype application for the Android platform.

That’s a great news! I believe most of us prefer the good ol’ Skype interface for making long distance calls, as we got used to it on our desktop computers. Or that’s just me…

PerfectStorm theme makes your iPhone look like the BlackBerry Storm

Here’s a cool theme for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM)-to-iPhone switchers. The so called PerfectStorm brings the BlackBerry Storm look and feel to the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone. And while I don’t personally like Storm’s icons, I guess some of you dig the idea of having their iPhone look like RIM’s flagship all-touchscreen device.

Once the theme is installed, you’ll see that most of the user interface has been changed to resemble the Storm. This includes icons, lock-screen, calculator, media player, camera, dialer, sounds, Safari, and even a keyboard skin.

As it’s always the case with iPhone themes, a jailbroken device is required. Then (once iPhone is set free), simply search for “PerfectStorm” in Cydia or Installer, and take it from there.
