Microsoft pushes Acer, ViewSonic into Android licensing deal


Microsoft gets Acer, ViewSonic to pay for Android

Microsoft continued its campaign of profiting from Android's success on Thursday with new patent licensing deals through Acer and ViewSonic. The deals will see each pay royalties for their Android devices, such as the Iconia Smart and ViewPads. In spite of Acer being one of the first Chromebook makers, only ViewSonic of the two will also pay royalties for any Chrome OS devices it makes.

The deals mark a renewal in Microsoft's efforts after a few months of quiet. Most of its earlier deals were focused on smaller companies located primarily in Japan or the US. Acer and ViewSonic are both located in Taiwan and suggest Microsoft is conducting its campaign on a region-by-region basis.

Its strategy is identical to that it has taken against Linux, where it assumes an effective ownership of the OS through patents. Microsoft has largely counted on companies not having the resources or will to challenge the validity of its patents and is currently only facing opposition from Motorola, which is losing ground in its case. Google's attempts to link openness in Android to a lack of patent issues has often been called into question, but many have considered Microsoft's claimed rights tenuous.

Concernes have been raised about the anti-competitiveness of the deals given that companies like HTC, and possibly Samsung, Acer, and ViewSonic, are being handed 'discounts' on royalties if they also make Windows- and Windows Phone-based products. Unofficial estimates further point to Microsoft making more from Android than Windows Phone and assert that it's compensating for an inability to compete. Microsoft has more recently portrayed Google as ironically using the same strategy it used itself to gain a monopoly in a field by giving away for free what its competitors had to sell.

Amazonov odgovor na iPad zove se Fire


Amazon je javnosti predstavio Kindle Fire, novi Android tablet koji bi za razliku od crno-belog e-čitača Kindle trebalo da bude puno bliži modernim tabletima.



Amazonov tablet će imati dvojezgarni procesor i ekran dijagonale sedam inča. Što se tiče povezivosti, tu je samo WiFi (bez 3G-a), a Kindle Fire neće imati ni kameru ni mikrofon. No, cena će biti vrlo povoljna: svega 199 dolara.

Poređenja radi, najjeftinija verzija Appleovog iPada u SAD-u košta više nego dvostruko više: 499 dolara.

U skladu sa cenom novog Kindlea, Amazon je kupcima priredio još jedno ugodno iznenađenje: stari Kindle sa crno-belim ekranom sada u najjeftinijoj varijanti košta svega 79 dolara.

No, ta se cena odnosi na obični Kindle, a Amazon je odmah nakon objave Firea predstavio i novu generaciju pod nazivom Kindle Touch. Novi uređaj jetanji, manji i lakši od postojećeg Kindlea, nema fizičke tastere, a Amazon tvrdi da poseduje do sada najnapredniji ekran zasnovan na tehnologiji e-mastila (eng. e-ink).

Cena Kindle Toucha kreće od 99 dolara, a verzija sa ugrađenom 3G povezivošću koštaće 149 dolara. Kupci mogu naručiti oba uređaja već sad, a Amazon će početi sa isporukom 11. novembra.

Samsung to pay royalties to Microsoft for every Android it makes, inks cross-licensing deal




Samsung will pay Microsoft royalties for every Android handset and tablet it releases, but it will also widen the collaboration with Redmond over Windows Phone devices and will go as far as participating in the marketing of the new products, Microsoft announced today. That’s a huge win for Redmond as Samsung is one of the biggest Android makers. Earlier, another major Android phone maker, HTC, signed a deal with the software giant over licensing.

HTC and Samsung together reportedly accounted for half of all Androids sold in the States in the last year:

   “Together with the license agreement signed last year with HTC, today’s agreement with Samsung means that the top two Android handset manufacturers in the United States have now acquired licenses to Microsoft’s patent portfolio. These two companies together accounted for more than half of all Android phones sold in the U.S. over the past year. That leaves Motorola Mobility, with which Microsoft is currently in litigation, as the only major Android smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. without a license,” Microsoft’s Brad Smith and IP lawyer Horacio Gutierrez said.

This leaves Motorola as the only big phone maker that still hasn’t reached an agreement with Microsoft over its intellectual property claims for Android. What are the prospects on that? Given the fact that Microsoft had also secured a deal with ViewSonic, Acer and other not so well known companies, it seems that Android will become a key factor in Redmond’s mobile profits.

Google And Samsung Announce October 11 Event: Nexus Prime Imminent



It looks like the wait for the elusive Nexus Prime may soon be over. Samsung has just started sending out invites for a special Samsung/Google event that’s being held on October 11 at 11:30 AM in San Diego. The topic isn’t listed, but the invitation says we’ll see “what’s new from Android”.

The Prime, which has been rumored for months but is still unconfirmed, is expected to be the first device running Ice Cream Sandwich — the next major Android update, which will unify for ‘mobile’ Gingerbread OS with ‘Tablet’ Honeycomb.

It’s also expected to be a beast specs-wise, with a dual-core processor, 4.5″ or 4.65″ screen, and 4G. Oh, and my favorite rumor: it’s supposed to be running on Verizon’s top-notch 4G network.

Google’s Nexus line of phones, which have included the Nexus One and Nexus S before now, are unique in that they come with ‘Vanilla’ Android, without any carrier or OEM modifications. They’re also typically the very first devices to get updates as they’re released by the Android team.

I’ve been using a Nexus One as my primary phone for nearly two years now and have also used the Nexus S extensively — both of them have been excellent, and I’m not expecting the Prime to disappoint (though I am a bit concerned by the rumored huge screen size).

Aside from the Nexus Prime, the event may well feature other Samsung-made Android devices — perhaps we’ll see a Nexus tablet as well.
