"Sitting down at the piano, I put my hands on an F-sharp minor and sang the chorus, You?re everything I ever wanted and never knew I needed. I thought, ?does that make sense?? and I decided it did. It reminded me of the prodigal son who turned his head toward home as he sat in a pigsty and thought to himself, ?I can?t believe I left! I never knew how much I needed my father?s love, protection, and security.? I thought about that aspect of the parable and realized, no matter how far we run, we can?t escape the love of our Heavenly Father?we cannot hide from his love. The music to the verses flowed out exactly as you hear it now, but the words didn?t come together until several months later when I was doing some co-writing with Jason Ingram. With the help of Jason?s brilliant lyric ability, the verses emerged as we talked through the prodigal son?s mindset and his journey. My favorite concept in this song is in the first verse, and it?s actually where the album?s title came from. I picture a wayward son pleading to God, begging for a sign: ?show me You actually care about me!? He asks for a sign, and yet God has been whispering His love to him in the wind and shouting it in the waves all along." - Aaron Shust

Behind the Song:
"Every month, my ?D-group? would read a chapter from Rob Bell?s book Velvet Elvis and discuss it. After reading each chapter, I would write down corresponding passages in the Bible to study, as well as a verse to commit to memory. The verse that I chose for that day was Matthew 11:28-30. Rob Bell?s chapter for this particular month was called ?Yoke,? and it explained how, in Jesus? time, Rabbis had teachings or perspectives that were, by default, different interpretations of Scripture rather than other Rabbi?s teachings. Each Rabbi?s teaching was called his ?yoke.? Up until then, I thought that a ?yoke? was simply some sort of harness for oxen. Now it makes even more sense when I consider that Jesus said His yoke was easy. I had put off memorizing the verse and was facing the embarrassing prospect of having to admit I had not properly memorized it. So, I pulled the verse up on my phone (isn?t technology great!) and made up a melody to the verse to help me remember it, and it became this song." - Aaron Shust

"I don?t know how anyone who has ever flown in an airplane can look at all the amazing sites of nature and not believe in a Divine Creator. I was reading Psalm 148 and noticed how God set all these things in place: the sun and moon, morning stars, rain clouds, hurricanes, fire and hail, snow and ice, snakes and birds, kings, leaders, men and women, ?greybeards? and children. The psalmist calls all of God?s creation to give praise to Him who created them, and then mentions that out of all these things, He?s built a monument?not the Himalayas or Mount Fuji, but us! ?His very own people!? It blows my mind that, out of all of the amazing natural wonders I can see from 40,000 feet, God chose humans to be the monument that points to His worth and His glory more than anything else. I was reminded of King David?s prayer: ?Create in me a clean heart, oh Lord my God, and renew a right spirit within me.? My prayer in this song is directed to the Creator of the Universe, acknowledging all that He has done, and then asking that He would create again, but this time, in me." - Aaron Shust

"On a hot summer night in Georgia, just after I graduated college, I was lying awake at 4 a.m. and regretting decisions I?d made the day before. I don?t remember what it was specifically that was keeping me awake that night, I just remember knowing it was wrong and being sick about it. I repented, begging God for His forgiveness and redemption, and declaring my intent to change my ways. I knew I was free, and that He gave me that forgiveness immediately, because I John 1:9 says that ?if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.? However, I still had to live with myself ? wretched man that I am! I also read in the Bible that His mercies are new every morning, and that ?weeping may last for a night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning.? "I was driving to a memorial concert for Rick Pearson, a friend who had died of leukemia at the age of 23. He had everything going for him?he led worship at his church, at camps and at conferences, had recently gotten engaged and everybody seemed to love him. "This song was one of my first attempts at the treacherous art form of writing from God?s perspective. What is very interesting to me is how my theology has evolved since the time I wrote it. My original lyric But that won?t happen if you run away changed to It doesn?t matter if you run away. A line that said Until I find you wandering alone changed to I don?t care how far away you roam. I loved this song and wanted to record the original version as a little tribute to the past, but that would have meant singing lyrics that I didn?t really believe anymore. What I do believe is that it doesn?t matter if we run away or hide. I don?t believe that God can?t find us if we run away, and I don?t believe God has to search for us, as if He didn?t know exactly where we are and what we?re doing.
