Rivera: Pirlo Is As Good As Kaka 

Milan legend Gianni Rivera believes that Andrea Pirlo is just as good as Kaka, while he also offers his take on the recent refereeing controversies.



The winner of this year’s prestigious Ballon d’Or award is set to be announced next week, and Kaka is the odds-on favourite to win the prize. 

“Kaka is one of the most exciting and important players of a generation,” Rivera told Sky Calcio.

“But Pirlo is a player who has consistently achieved great things and I would say that he is just as good.” 

Rivera, who won the Golden Ball in 1969 after a mesmerising performance in the European Cup final against Ajax, also spoke about Serie A’s referees. 

Juventus and Milan have been particularly damning of the officiating after having numerous costly decisions go against them this season. 

“The fact that sides like Milan are complaining is positive because it means that they are human errors,” the original ‘Golden Boy’ claimed.

“I remember the 1971-72 season when we lost the title due to a very debatable penalty.

“It was the final straw and at the end of the game I made some strong accusations that earned me a ban for two months.“There will always be mistakes and we need to avoid reading anything into them.”

Maldini Excited About Club World Cup 

Milan captain Paolo Maldini talked about the upcoming Club World Cup in Japan, underlining that the club are after revenge following three consecutive defeats in the final of the Intercontinental Cup.


That the Club World Cup in December is seen by AC Milan's hierarchy as the primary objective of the season is something that's been obvious all along. Not only because of Vice-President Adriano Galliani's repeated statements that the tournament that used to be known as the Intercontinental Cup is what the club are aiming for, but also because of an athletic preparation that appears to have been programmed to get the Rossoneri in top shape for the big event in Japan.

If any more motivation to achieve the Club World title were needed, Milan's captain and club icon Paolo Maldini gave at least three reasons to try and win the trophy after a 17 year wait.

"Personally I remember the finals I've already played," he said. "The first time we played it without fully realising the importance of this Cup, we only realised it after we won. The last three, on the other hand, still hurt. The first, against San Paolo in 1993, was one we lost after a very balanced match.

"In the last two finals we were not inferior and we went home with a sour taste in our mouths because we really wanted to win."

Maldini then talked about the new format of the competition, which is different from before when the trophy was handed out after a single encounter: "It's the first time we'll play with this formula and I think it will be more difficult than the previous one.

"Fortunately we will have time to get used to the time difference and the rhythm of Japanese life. I think that our condition will be at its best by the time we arrive in Japan."

Milan's last participation to the former Intercontinental Cup was in 2003, when the Rossoneri were defeated on penalties by Boca Juniors, an opponent they will cross paths with again this time.

Kaka Wins Ballon d’Or – Report 

Reports in Italy claim that Milan superstar Kaka has won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for 2007.


Kaka has long been the hot favourite for the prize, but according to the ‘Corriere della Sera’, he has already been notified of his success. 

The official awards ceremony takes place in Paris on December 2, and Kaka is believed to have won by a landslide. 

The 25-year-old has had a stunning past 12 months, and was inspirational in leading Milan to the Champions League title last May, finishing the competition as top scorer. 

Kaka’s Rossoneri team-mate Andrea Pirlo is challenging for second or third place, along with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo. 

A number of Milan players have won the Golden Ball in the past, Andriy Shevchenko being the most recent in 2004. 

The original ‘Golden Boy’, Gianni Rivera, picked up the prize in 1969 following a legendary individual performance against Ajax in the European Cup final of that year. 

Dutch masters Marco Van Basten (1988, 1989 and 1992) and Ruud Gullit (1987), and Liberian great George Weah, are other former Milan winners.
