Kaka: I Want To Become A Club Symbol

Kaka says he wants to follow in the footsteps of Paolo Maldini and become a club symbol for Milan.

The Brazilian superstar joined the Rossoneri in 2003 as a virtual unknown on the European scene, however he has since developed into the best player in the world.

Maldini made his debut for Milan way back in January 1985, and almost 23 years later the 39-year-old is still going strong in the black-and-red colours.

"I have always said I want to become a symbol of this club, one of the leaders and the captain, respecting the hierarchy in the team,” Kaka told uefa.com.

“Paolo Maldini is a great example for me. But not just him. There are several players here who have won everything but still have the same motivation to keep on winning.”

Kaka has won most of the prestigious honours in the game, including the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, the Serie A title, and of course the Champions League in May of this year.

“At 25 I have already won almost everything in my career. Now I want to do it again,” he added.

The one big prize that Kaka has not got his hands on yet is the FIFA Club World Cup, which Milan are currently in Japan competing for.

"This is the last major trophy I'm missing and it's the same for several of my team-mates including the Italian internationals who won the World Cup last year," concluded the newly crowned Ballon d’Or winner.

A Historical Look At AC Milan And The Club World Cup

Milan’s participation in this month’s FIFA Club World Cup will be the eighth time that they have contested for the honour of the best club team in the world. Carlo Garganese takes a fascinating look at Milan’s previous voyages, including meetings with Pele, Higuita, and the butchers of Estudiantes…

The format of what is now known as the FIFA Club World Cup has altered slightly over the years.

Originally this challenge was known as the Intercontinental Cup and it was created in 1960 as a two-legged final between the champions of Europe and the champions of South America.

Real Madrid won the very first edition with a 5-1 aggregate victory over Uruguayan side Penarol – Ferenc Puskas, Alfredo Di Stefano and Francisco Gento among the scorers.

1963:  AC Milan 4-2 Santos (Bra) – San Siro, Milan
Santos (Bra) 4-2 AC Milan – Maracana, Rio de Janeiro (4-4 on aggregate)
Playoff: Santos (Bra) 1-0 AC Milan

AC Milan first appeared in 1963 and were involved in possibly the greatest ever Intercontinental Cup final against Pele’s legendary Santos team.

The Rossoneri won the first leg 4-2 at San Siro, courtesy of goals from future Azzurri Coach Giovanni Trapattoni, Bruno Mora, and Amarildo (2). The king himself, Pele, scored both of Santos’ goals, the second proving to be crucial in the 84th minute.

Pele would famously say after this game that he never played against a harder opponent than Trapattoni in his entire career.

In the second leg at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, Milan raced into a 2-0 lead through goals from Jose Altafini, and Mora again. With the score 6-2 on aggregate the tie seemed over, however Santos were not rated as the best team in the world for nothing, and they produced an incredible second-half comeback, scoring four times in 18 minutes, with another legend, Pepe, scoring twice.

As the aggregate scores were level at 6-6, a playoff had to be organised to decide who would win the trophy. Somewhat ridiculously the game was hastily played just two days later at the Maracana as Milan had to travel back to Italy.

With the advantage of playing in their own stadium, Santos won 1-0 with a Djalmo penalty kick, while Paolo Maldini’s father, Cesare was sent off.

1969: AC Milan 3 – 0 Estudiantes (Arg) – San Siro, Milan

Estudiantes 2-1 AC Milan – La Bombonera, Buenos Aires
(AC Milan won 4-2 on aggregate)

Milan’s next entrance into the Intercontinental Cup came in 1969, following their magnificent 4-1 European Cup final victory over Johan Cruijff’s Ajax.

They met the infamously violent Estudiantes of Argentina, who the year before had quite literally kicked lumps out of Manchester United during their 2-1 aggregate win.

The Argentines, who contained 1986 World Cup winning Coach Carlos Bilardo in their line-up, lost 3-0 at San Siro in the first leg, with Angelo Sormani (2) and Nestor Combin scoring the goals.

The return leg in Buenos Aires will go down as one of the most violent games in football history, with Estudiantes’ 2-1 victory on the night irrelevant.

Such was the brutality of the Estudiantes players that the entire team was arrested on the orders of the Argentine President no less. The goalkeeper, Poletti, was suspended from football for life, while the squad’s football became known as el antifutbol

1989: AC Milan 1-0 Atletico Nacional (Col) – National Stadium, Tokyo

Due to the large number of brawls that occurred in the Intercontinental Cup, a number of European winners began to refuse to play.

This forced a change in format and in 1980 the Cup was sponsored by Toyota and played in a one-off match in Japan.

Milan played in their first Toyota Cup final in 1989, beating Colombian outfit Atletico Nacional 1-0 after extra time. Alberigo Evani scored the winner in the 119th minute, sparking wild scenes of celebration, with Vice-President Adriano Galliani running onto the pitch like an unchained beast.

The Nacional side that day included a couple of well-known faces. The flamboyant Rene Higuita, famous for his ‘scorpion kick’ at Wembley was in goal, while Andres Escobar the player tragically shot dead after scoring an own goal for Colombia at USA 94’ was in defence.

1990: AC Milan 3-0 Olimpia Asuncion (Par) – National Stadium, Tokyo

After retaining their European Cup against Benfica, Milan returned to Tokyo the following year to face Olimpia of Paraguay. This time Arrigo Sacchi’s men won comfortably with Frank Rijkaard grabbing two goals, and a young Giovanni Stroppa the other.

The Rossoneri team that day included a back-four which many consider as the greatest ever - Mauro Tassotti, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Franco Baresi. The Dutch trio (pictured above) of Van Basten, Gullit and of course Rijkaard were also on display.

1993: Sao Paulo (Bra) 3-2 AC Milan – National Stadium, Tokyo

Milan lost the 1993 European Cup Final to Marseille, however the French were barred from travelling to Tokyo due to an infamous bribe scandal in their domestic championship.

The Rossoneri replaced them and were involved in a memorable game against an outstanding Sao Paulo side. The Brazilians Coach at the time was the legendary Tele Santana, who had bossed the brilliant Brazil team of Zico, Eder and Socrates in the 1982 World Cup.

In their line-up was another great from 1982, Toninho Cerezo, who had earlier enjoyed an illustrious career in Italy with Roma and Sampdoria.

The 38-year-old Cerezo was voted man-of-the-match after scoring a goal and leading his side to a 3-2 victory.

Sao Paulo also contained a young Cafu in their team that day, as well as another man with Rossoneri connections, Leonardo.

Former Torino striker Luiz Muller scored the winner in the 86th minute, while Milan’s goalscorers were Jean-Pierre Papin and Daniele Massaro.

1994: Velez Sarsfield (Arg) 2-0 AC Milan – National Stadium, Tokyo

Milan returned the next year, this time as winners, following their 4-0 thumping of Barcelona in the European Cup Final.

However they were again defeated, this time by Velez Sarsfield. The Argentine’s star name was their live-wire Paraguayan goalkeeper Jose-Luis Chilavert. Alessandro Costacurta was sent off for Milan.

2003: Boca Juniors (Arg) 1-1 AC Milan – International Stadium, Yokohama (Boca Juniors won 3-1 on penalties)

After a nine-year absence Milan played in their seventh edition of the tournament in 2003 against Boca Juniors. The Argentine-side’s Coach was Carlos Bianchi, who had led Velez Sarsfield to success over the Rossoneri in 1994.

He repeated the trick as Boca won 3-1 on penalties, after the match had finished 1-1. Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Alessandro Costacurta all missed from the spot.

Playing for Boca that day was current Inter stopper Nicolas Burdisso, as well as a teenage Carlos Tevez.

Maldini: I’m Not Retiring

Milan captain Paolo Maldini has rubbished reports that claimed he was set to announce his retirement at the end of the FIFA Club World Cup this month.

The Italian and European press suggested yesterday that Maldini was to hang up his boots due to recurrent knee problems.

The 39-year-old legend underwent surgery on the injury in the summer and has only recently returned to action after a number of months out.

“I have absolutely no intention of hanging up my boots yet,” Maldini told journalists.

“I have a contract until the end of June 2008 and that will be the end of my career.

“After five months of rehabilitation, it would be absurd to give up on the season now that I’m healthy. I want to enjoy myself until the end of this term.”

Maldini also expressed his determination to win the FIFA Club World Cup. The Rossoneri have lost their last three world finals, to Sao Paulo in 1993, Velez Sarsfield in 1994 and Boca Juniors in 2003.

“I have lost a lot of Finals, but this time we have reached the conclusion of two years of work,” Maldini explained.

“Every time I have come to Japan and been beaten, I thought that I would return.

“Defeats are never easy to get over, especially those in the Intercontinental Cup where we lost to two sides we should have beaten, especially Velez Sarsfield.”

Maldini also lost two major finals for the Italian national team, against Brazil at USA 94’, and France at Euro 2000.
