Popis deset najgorih transfera sezone po soccernetu:

10. Mauricio Pellegrino (Liverpool, free)
A stalwart of Valencia's mean defence under Rafael Benitez, Pellegrino has become a symptom of Liverpool's problems in the Premiership. His 11 appearances have brought six defeats and a mere nine points, the ponderous Pellegrino a common denominator in goals Liverpool have conceded.

At 33, the pace of the Premiership appears too quick for the ageing Argentine. But his arrival has brought one bonus for Liverpool; as Pellegrino has suffered, Sami Hyypia has prospered, returning to his imperious form of 2001.

9. Kostas Chalkias (Portsmouth, £100,000)
Some managers become indelibly associated with their greatest folly in the transfer market. Unfortunately for Velimir Zajec, his name is now bracketed with that of Kostas Chalkias, the Greek goalkeeper he plucked from Panathinaikos and parachuted into the team for the FA Cup derby against Southampton.

That he did not move for the first goal he conceded was not a good omen. After five Premiership games - and a particularly hapless attempt to deal with a Thierry Henry free kick - Chalkias was dropped. He has not yet returned.

8. Javi de Pedro (Blackburn, free)
Until Morten Gamst Pedersen's successful second half of the season, Ewood Park appeared a graveyard for imported left wingers. Javi de Pedro came to Blackburn a Spanish international and, nearly, a La Liga winner in 2003.

He left for Perugia after just two games, having made no impact whatsoever.

7. Francis Jeffers (Charlton, £2.6 million)
He averages a goal every 45 minutes in international football and, since 2001, two per season for his various clubs. The story of an Everton prodigy who makes a lucrative move has become well known but after a fourth successive poor year, Francis Jeffers looks more of a benchwarmer than a predator.

A move to Charlton was expected to guarantee him first-team football, but Shaun Bartlett's greater workload and ability to hold the ball up have made him the regular forward in Alan Curbishley's 4-5-1 system. If he cannot make an impact at the Valley, where does Jeffers go from there?

6. Carlton Cole (Aston Villa, season-long loan)
At his best, Carlton Cole is an awesome proposition. But Cole is seen at his peak all too rarely as his total of three goals for the season shows.

It is a reason why Aston Villa's strikers have been outscored by their midfielders this season; David O'Leary even moved Cole to the left of midfield for one match; whether a cunning psychological ploy or desperation, it did not end a goal drought.

His loan spell at Villa Park will not be extended, but it is surely a safe assumption that he will not be in the Chelsea team next season.

5. Mikael Nilsson (Southampton, £500,000)
Harry Redknapp recently bemoaned a lack of creativity on the flanks for Southampton; his predecessor Paul Sturrock complained about a lack of goals from midfield. In theory, the arrival of a Sweden international winger last summer should have rectified both problems. But Mikael Nilsson's 16 games (one win, no goals) have shown he is ineffective as a supply line to the strikers.

He made an inauspicious debut - when he was taken off at half-time - and Nilsson's season has hardly improved. He may be a better full back than right-sided midfielder, but Redknapp preferred to make Rory Delap Southampton's seventh right back of the season than recall Nilsson.

4. Jesper Gronkjaer (Birmingham, £2 million)
Be careful what you wish for. A triumphant Steve Bruce secured his six main transfer targets last summer. By New Year, Jesper Gronkjaer was on his way to Spain, an undisclosed fee camouflaging Birmingham's loss in his six-month spell at St Andrews.

The Birmingham supporters only saw Gronkjaer's capacity to frustrate, outsprinting defenders only to send in a succession of wayward crosses. At Atletico Madrid, he has appeared the player Bruce thought he was signing.

3. Nicky Butt (Newcastle, £2.5 million)
Sir Alex Ferguson can be faulted for the central midfielders he has signed, but not those he has sold. As Eric Djemba-Djemba undermined Aston Villa's European push, Nicky Butt found Tyneside a more unforgiving place than Old Trafford.

It has been a year to forget for Newcastle and for few more than Butt; after two seasons on the fringes of the Manchester United team, there are now suggestions that he is not in Graeme Souness' best XI.

2. Manuel Almunia (Arsenal, undisclosed fee)
Almunia's CV appeared that of an undistinguished reserve keeper, not the final piece in the Arsenal jigsaw. But the Spaniard's performances in training convinced Arsene Wenger to promote him ahead of Jens Lehmann for a 12-game spell bookended by defeats to Manchester United.

Each contained Almunia errors, and Weng
er must start his annual search for a goalkeeper.

1. Mateja Kezman (Chelsea, £5 million)
He arrived at Chelsea with a superlative record in a lesser league, but the similarities between Jose Mourinho and Mateja Kezman end there. The not-so-special one was targeted by Charlton and West Bromwich Albion before Mourinho made his move.

Admittedly Kezman did score in the Carling Cup final but, of his four Premiership goals, one was a superfluous late penalty against Newcastle and the others came against the promoted teams.

Had Mourinho signed a better striker, Chelsea might now be in the Champions League final; given the budget afforded to him, there is no good reason why he did not.
