South Korean launched its first Aegis destroyer on Friday to help boost its navy.
The 7,600-ton destroyer, equipped with the Aegis air defense system, is the first of three Aegis-equipped destroyers that the South Korean Navy plans to develop by 2012 under a program code- named KDX-III. The country also plans to build a new naval base on the southern island of Jeju to expand the range of naval operations.
If Aegis destroyers are dispatched to the envisaged Jeju naval base, it will be able to provide support for combat operations in the East China Sea, East Sea (Sea of Japan) and the Yellow Sea, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported.
The Aegis system is a surface-to-air integrated weapons system in which high-powered, phased-array radar is able to perform search, tracking and missile guidance functions with a tracking capacity of over 100 targets at the same time.
U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. provides the Aegis combat system to Seoul.
South Korea is the fifth country to have an Aegis destroyer after the U.S., Japan, Spain and Norway.
