Britain has privately complained to Beijing that Chinese-made weapons are being used by the Taleban to attack British troops in Afghanistan.

 Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The Chinese government denied media reports that it sold weapons to the Taliban in Afghanistan and that the People's Liberation Army hacked into the U.S. Defense Department's computer network.

The British Broadcasting Corp. report of Chinese weapons in Taliban hands and the Financial Times report of a June cyber attack on the Pentagon are both ``baseless,'' Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters today in Beijing.

The U.K. has complained to China about finding Chinese-made weapons in the hands of Taliban rebels as they fight coalition troops, the BBC reported today on its Web site, without saying where it obtained the information. The Financial Times today cited unidentified American officials as saying the PLA penetrated the Pentagon's computer network.

``China observes the strictest rules in weapon sales and we require buyers to disclose if they're re-selling our weapons,'' Jiang said. ``China opposes any action that threatens online safety and is willing to work with the international community to strengthen global cooperation'' against cyber attacks, she said.

Chinese arms have been recovered on several occasions from insurgents in Afghanistan and a British official raised concerns during a recent meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Beijing, the BBC said.

The weapons include anti-aircraft guns, landmines, rocket- propelled grenades and components for roadside bombs, the BBC said, citing an unidentified Afghan official. Authorities in Beijing pledged to carry out an investigation, according to the BBC report.

Chinese computer hackers spent several months probing the Pentagon's system from numerous locations in China, according to the FT's report today. The Defense Department shut down a computer system in the office of Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the FT reported.

The Defense Department is still investigating how much data was downloaded with one person saying most of the information was probably unclassified, according to the newspaper. Officials are considering the kind of information they send over unsecured e- mail systems, FT said.
