SUPPORTERS of a self-styled "Nostradamus" who FALSELY predicted a 9.8 magnitude earthquake would hit the US claim he got it "almost right".

Frank Hoogerbeets forewarned that Los Angeles would go into the sea and Japan would suffer tsunamis yesterday - but none of this happened.

However, he has gained some support after there were strong earthquakes in Alaska and Chile, trembles reported in California, and a volcanic eruption in Japan, all within 24 hours of each other yesterday and today.

Mr Hoogerbeets from Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, told Express.co.uk that the "devastating quake" is STILL coming, but might just be "a bit later" than he thought.

This claim has angered sceptics who panned his prediction and accused him of moving the goal posts.

Mr Hoogerbeets has been widely ridiculed for his doomsday prophecy not being realised.

More than 1.5million people watched a video he posted on YouTube claiming a world-changing earthquake was likely to rock Los Angeles and California at 4pm local time yesterday because of planetary alignments.

Yet he appeared to hint today on Facebook he was in the right direction following strong seismic activity after posting: "Magnitude 6.8 near Alaska with four planetary alignments still being active. The square Venus-Mercury-Earth was good for two 7-pointers in early May. Just saying…," with a link to details of the Alaskan tremor.

Hoogerbeets warned in his original video: "If the prophecy is correct Los Angeles will go into the sea and Japan will be affected by terrible tsunamis."

None of this happened, but smaller seismic events occurring within these areas around the time he suggested have gained him some online supporters.

The first event was at 10am local time in Japan today (6pm California yesterday), the whole 140 people population of the tiny southern Japanese island of Kuchinoerabu were ordered to evacuate after volcano Mount Shindake spectacularly erupted without warning, sending columns of thick, black smoke 9,000 feet into the air.

Three hours later at 1am this morning local time (9pm yesterday California) a strong 5.1 earthquake struck in Chile, 30 miles north of Vallenar.

At 11pm local time yesterday (12am California today) a close to 7 magnitude powerful earthquake struck near a sparsely populated region off the southwest coast of Alaska, USA, with its epicentre about 70 miles south-southeast of Ugashik.

It was followed very closely by reports of a 5.1 earthquake in Northern California at 12.05am this morning.

The US Geological Survey posted details of the strong quake saying "Did you feel it?"

A number of people responded saying they felt the tremors near Redding and McKinleyville on the coast.

Geophysicist Robert Sanders said reports of the quake were actually triggered by the earlier Alaskan one, and not a separate earthquake.

He said: "Sometimes the local networks can be triggered by these seismic events."

But online posters were quick to dismiss Hoogerbeets' prophecy saying he was plucking dates out of a hat and that California faces some sort of seismic activity most days.

Mr Hoogerbeets told www.express.co.uk that he "did not predict an earthquake," but had "issued a warning that a large earthquake could strike around May 28."

But he continues to believe that it is coming.

He added: "I am learning a lot from these observations. Still, I believe parts of California will break off and fall into the sea in the near future.

"One of the main reasons is the fact that 42,000 oil wells continue to pump out oil and inject water back in. So they are definitely asking for trouble over there."

Mr Hoogerbeets also suggested on his Ditrainam Media Facebook page the mega-quake may still come TODAY or soon after, but David Harbaugh replied venting his anger at this.

He wrote: "I thought it was when the planets align on the 28th. Now I see you say could be the 29th or later. I could guess any random date and if I got lucky like you, then everyone would think I predicted a major earthquake too. Just admit it their is no true way to pinpoint the exact time of an earthquake. You said 4pm on the 28th. Any other date would just be by chance."

Andrea Marie Bennett had earlier joked yesterday: "It's 4:04 here in California and I'm still alive. No earthquake."

And Mitch Robertson stormed: "Your prediction was false. What have you learnt from this? Here's a thought: "strange feelings and intuitions" need more meat behind them."

Supporters also added posts, with Julie Chin saying: "Still part of the Pacific Rim!! You called it pretty good!" and Dusty ChantelReamey: "He was close. No?"

Carol Moffitt said: "I still feel something big is coming soon. Not out of the woods yet. The entire earth is active! Frank, thank you for having the courage to put this out there."

Christina Nordmark added: "It's not a matter of if it's going to hit but when it will hit! It's inevitable and we all know it will eventually! I live in Cali and can't get earthquake insurance."

What is known is that scientists agree there will be a magnitude 8 major earthquake in the state of California within the next 30 years, giving Hoogerbeets some room for manoeuvre.

Ahead of his deadline passing, several scientists went online to ally fears, pointing out the position of the planets in our solar system could not trigger earthquakes and that it was impossible for such as sized quake coming from true San Andreas fault.

Many other online posters also branded his video a hoax, designed to promote the blockbuster movie San Andreas, about a devastating earthquake rocking the region, which opens in cinemas today.

The video made by his YouTube channel Ditrianum Media, claimed to have warned of the Nepal 7.8 earthquake five days before it struck.

It includes a 3D moving map of the solar system showing the alignment of the planets on May 28, claiming it "will disrupt geological processes" on Earth.

Astronomer Phil Plait, who writes for New Scientist, said ahead of yesterday: "I'm seeing some buzz on social media that a planetary alignment on May 28 will cause a huge magnitude 9.8 earthquake.

"Let me be clear: No, it won't. It can't.

"There is simply no way an alignment of planets can cause an earthquake on Earth. It's literally impossible.

"This all stems from a video by someone who I believe is sincere but also profoundly wrong on essentially every level."

Mr Hoogerbeets explained in his video he was first told of the mega-quake by SPIRITS.

He said: "On August 12 2013 I received a message directly from spirits that a very, very large earthquake would happen on the west coast of America.

"Now I believe I know when it is exactly going to be. I hope I am wrong."
