PyS60 1.9.1 adds support for Symbian S60 5th Edition!



The new version of PyS60, Python for Symbian S60, is out and it includes support for the latest, touch-enabled S60 5th Edition, ensuring apps can run on the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 5800 XpressMusic and the upcoming Nokia N97! Just like its predecessor, version 1.9.1 is based on the new Python 2.5.1 core, bringing more opportunities for mobile Python developers.

There’s a catch, however. PyS60 1.9.1 is still not a final product, but if you’re a developer you’re invited to give it a try and send your bug-fixing suggestions and other feedback to make the final version (2.0) as reliable as possible.

Many of the known bugs are fixed with this update and the overall system is improved and optimized. For one thing, the new version prides itself with a better interpreter startup and sis installation time — something that will be further improved in future versions…

Symbian: Fring for Nokia 5800 (beta)



This is the first beta of Frings for s60v5 (Nokia 5800 and N97). Working smoothly with minor bugs from time to time. Download Fring from here. Install the application on the memory card.

fring for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic now available

Back in January, fring promised to release a version of its popular communication app for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, thus for the Symbian S60 5th Edition platform.

Well, the Israeli company kept its promise and it has just launched fring v. 3.37.18 for Symbian, which obviously supports the Nokia 5800, as well as all the other Nokia devices supported until now.

Apart from being optimized for touchscreen use, the app doesn’t seem to come with other new features, so the old ones will have to do for the moment.

Most probably, this version of fring will work  with the Nokia 97 too, when this gets launched.

S60 5th Edition SDK 1.0 now available!



Nokia has released the full version, 1.0, of the S60 5th Edition SDK (previously available was version 0.9). Available through Forum Nokia (NYSE: NOK), the new version adds support for keypad-off display in the emulator, additional languages, a start-up progress indicator for the emulator. In addition, a number of bugs, issues and deficiencies have been fixed, and many new plug-ins were made available.

For the record, the SDK enables development in Symbian C++, Standard C/C++ (Open C/C++), Java (JME), Web Runtime (WRT) and Python (via a plug-in) for devices based on the S60 platform. It is based on Symbian OS 9.4 and includes documentation, API reference, emulator and associated development tools. IDE is not included, though you can work with Carbide.C++ for C++ developments; and/or NetBeans IDE 6.0, 6.1 and 6.5 or Eclipse 3.3.1 with EclipseME 1.7.7 and MTJ for Java development.

Nokia Photo Browser released for S60 touch phones



Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Labs has released a new free application called Nokia Photo Browser for Symbian S60 5th edition devices - 5800 XpressMusic and the upcoming N97. As you can figure out for yourself, the app is developed to allow users to do a simple task - browse through photos on their device. The twist is in such things as the quick and easy-to-use UI, as well as some other cool features like “Face browsing” and “MagGlass” magnifier.

The first of the two features mentioned uses face detection technology to find people faces from pictures, allowing you to quickly finger flick through all the faces in an image. The “MagGlass” magnifier on its end adds that analog look and feel to zooming…

Flash Lite 3.1 released for Symbian S60 5th Edition



Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Adobe have released an updated version of Flash Lite for Symbian S60 5th Edition. Owners of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic can upgrade their Flash Lite player to version 3.1 from the “App update” utility. It’s 700k heavy download, so you may want to be in a hotspot prior to pushing the “update” button — or forget that part if you’re on an unlimited mobile data plan.

Once downloaded, Flash Lite 3.1 installs without a restart, and as a result Flash performance on web pages is way smoother. To put it in other words - there’s no reason not to update!
