MIAMI, Fla. (www.sonyopentennis.com) – The ATP and WTA entry lists for the 2013 Sony Open were announced today and the tournament will once again feature a Grand Slam caliber player field.

Each spring the Sony Open brings the greatest tennis players in the world to the Crandon Park Tennis Center and 2013 is no different. The Sony Open field features several Grand Slam champions including reigning singles champions Novak Djokovic (Australian Open), Rafael Nadal (French Open), Andy Murray (US Open), Victoria Azarenka (Australian Open), Maria Sharapova (French Open) and Serena Williams (Wimbledon and US

Qualifying rounds will be played March 18-19 and will determine 12 more slots in each singles draw. The tournament will also award wildcards to five men and eight women. The main draw begins on Tuesday, March 19 as the women take the court, followed by the beginning of the men’s main draw on Wednesday, March 20.


Djokovic returns to Miami seeking a three-peat, having won the trophy in 2011 and 2012. He brought home his first Sony Open title in 2007. On the women’s side, 15-time Grand Slam champ and Olympic Gold Medalist, Serena Williams returns on a mission for a record-breaking sixth Sony Open title, but both contenders will face a tough field in their quest for Sony Open history.

On the men’s side, 11-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, recently made his return to the court and is entered to play his 10th consecutive Sony Open. Nadal, a three-time finalist, will attempt to capture his first title on the purple courts. Andy Murray, the 2009 Sony Open champion, will look to bounce back from last year’s final appearance and take home the coveted trophy.

Nadal pulls out of Miami Masters

The Miami Masters was facing a pullout crisis on Sunday after Rafael Nadal withdrew, following the decision weeks ago by Roger Federer, who will also miss the hardcourt event.

Also out: American Mardy Fish, Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka and Marcos Baghdatis, according to the official entry list.

Federer announced that he would not be playing in Miami months ago, instead taking a long training block at home in Switzerland.

Federer is due to return to defend his clay title in Madrid in the first week of May.

Nadal's decision came as the Spaniard surprisingly reached the final at the Indian Wells Masters, capping what has been a month-long comeback after seven months away with a knee injury.

He won two clay trophies and reached the final of another South American event before surprising himself with the Indian Wells final against Juan Martin del Potro.

Fish revealed that after testing his long-standing accelerated heartbeat condition with a few matches at Indian Wells, he does not feel confident enough to take the next step and play a second straight big event.

Some have speculated that 31-year-old will be out of action through the clay season and possibly even into the summer. But nothing is certain.

Ernest Gulbis also withdrew instead of playing in qualifying tournaments or asking for a wildcard.

The quirky Latvian made headlines in recent weeks as he awoke from several seasons of half-hearted form. He ran off a 13-match win streak that ended in the Indian Wells fourth-round in a loss to Nadal.

Gulbis, who played 14 matches in less than three weeks, has risen from outside the top 100 to almost into the top 50 in the current ATP list.

There could also be a nasty surprise on the women's side as world No.2 Victoria Azarenka continues to deal with an ankle inflammation that has bothered her for a month and forced her to withdraw in Dubai and Indian Wells.
Her presence in Miami is dependent on her recovery.

Nadal preskače turnir u Majamiju


 Posle osvajanja titule u Indijan Velsu, Rafael Nadal zvanično je potvrdio da neće igrati na Mastersu u Majamiju.



„Mnogo je teških momenata iza mene“, rekao je Nadal koji nije mogao da sakrije osmeh i sreću zbog 53. trofeja u karijeri, „Žao mi je što neću igrati u Majamiju, ali mislim da mi je potreban odmor. Nisam očekivao da ću igrati ovoliko mečeva u pretodnih mesec dana, doktor mi je rekao da bi trebalo da se odmorim“, dodao je Nadal.

Osim njega, u Majamiju neće biti ni Rodžera Federera, Vavrinke, Gulbisa, Fiša, Monfisa...
