PERSONAL DATA: Born August 31, 1953, in Magadan, Russia. Hero of the Russian Federation, Pilot-cosmonaut of the Russian Federation, 3rd Class Cosmonaut. Hobbies include game sports, history of aviation and cosmonautics, astronomy.

EDUCATION: In 1977 Vinogradov graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute, department “Airborne Vehicles" with specialization in booster designing, and in 1980 he received the qualification of computer systems analyst at the department of “Automated Designing Systems”

EXPERIENCE : In 1977 – 1983 Vinogradov specialized in software development for automated interactive designing systems of recoverable vehicles, development of aerodynamics and aerodyne arrangement design models, computer graphics.

In 1983 Vinogradov started working for the Head Design Bureau of RSC “Energia.” He worked on flight procedure verification for “Soyuz TM” and “Buran” vehicles, development of automated crew training systems. Participated in launch preparation of the “Soyuz TM,” “Buran” vehicles and Energia rockets.

Vinogradov joined the Energia cosmonaut corps in May 1992. From October 1992 to February 1994, he completed generic space training at GCTC. From May 1994 to February 1995, he completed advanced test-cosmonaut training.

He has logged 11 hours in L-39 training airplane, and has completed 29 parachute jumps.

From February 20 to September 3, 1995, Vinogradov trained as a flight engineer of the Mir-20 and EuroMir-95 backup crew to fly on the “Soyuz TM” and “Mir” space station.

From October 1995 to August 1996, he trained for spaceflight on the “Soyuz TM” vehicle and the “Mir” space station as a flight engineer under the Mir-22/NASA-3 and “Cassiopeia” programs.

From August 1996 to August 1997, Vinogradov trained as a flight engineer of the Mir-24 prime crew. From August 5, 1997 to February 19, 1998, he performed a 198-day spaceflight onboard the “Soyuz TM” and “Mir” station as the Expedition 24 prime crew flight engineer under the Mir-24/NASA 5, 6 program.

From March 1999 to April 2000, Vinogradov trained for spaceflight as the Mir-28 backup flight engineer.

From June 2000 to December 2000, trained as the Mir-29 flight engineer.

From January 2001 to November 2002, he completed training as test-cosmonaut of the ISS group.

From December 2002 to February 2003, he trained as the flight engineer of the ISS Taxi backup crew 5.

From January 2004 Vinogradov has been training as the Expedition-13 crew commander for a six-month tour of duty aboard the International Space Station. The mission is scheduled to launch in 2006.

PERSONAL DATA: Born, January 18, 1958 in Superior, Wisconsin, but considers Winter, Wisconsin to be his hometown. Married to the former Anna-Marie Moore of Newburgh, New York. They have two sons. Enjoys running, fishing, camping, skiing, scuba diving and woodworking. His parents, Lloyd D. and Eunice A. Williams, reside in Winter, Wisconsin. Her mother, Gloria M. Moore, resides in Modena, New York. Her father, S. Stevens Moore, is deceased.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Winter High School, Winter, Wisconsin, in 1976; received a bachelor of science degree in applied science and engineering from the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) in 1980, a master of science degree in aeronautical engineering and the degree of aeronautical engineer from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, both in 1987, and a master of arts degree in National security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College in 1996.

ORGANIZATIONS: Association of the U.S. Army, Society of Experimental Test Pilots, American Helicopter Society, Army Aviation Association of America, USMA Association of Graduates, Order of Daedalians, Officer Christian Fellowship.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: As a cadet Williams competed on the West Point sport parachute team and also held ratings of sport parachute jumpmaster and instructor. Williams received his commission as a second lieutenant from the U.S. Military Academy in May 1980 and was designated an Army aviator in September 1981. He completed a three-year assignment in Germany where he served in the 3rd Armored Division’s aviation battalion. Following his return to the United States, Williams completed a graduate program in aeronautical engineering, and was subsequently selected for an Army assignment at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), where he served for over 4 years. In 1992, Williams was selected for the Naval Test Pilot School. After graduation in June 1993, he served as an experimental test pilot and Flight Test Division Chief in the Army’s Airworthiness Qualification Test Directorate at Edwards Air Force Base, California. In 1995, he was selected for attendance at the Naval War College command and staff course as an Army exchange officer.

Williams has logged over 2,500 hours in more than 50 different aircraft.

NASA EXPERIENCE: Williams began an Army assignment at JSC in 1987. Until his transfer in 1992, he served as a Shuttle launch and landing operations engineer, a pilot in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory, and chief of the Operations Development Office, Flight Crew Operations Directorate. Selected by NASA in May 1996, Williams again reported to JSC in August 1996. After completing two years of training and evaluation, he performed technical duties in the Spacecraft Systems Branch and later in the Space Station Operations Branch on temporary assignment to Marshall Space Flight Center. In May 2000, he served as the flight engineer and lead spacewalker on STS-101. Since STS-101, he has served in the EVA Branch of the Astronaut Office, led the development of the cockpit upgrade requirements for the Space Shuttle, and completed a temporary assignment at NASA Headquarters in support of legislative affairs. In July 2002, Williams commanded a nine-day undersea coral reef expedition operating from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Aquarius habitat off the coast of Florida. Since November 2002, he has been training for an upcoming long-duration expedition on the International Space Station (ISS) shuttling between JSC and Star City, Russia. Williams was the backup Commander and Soyuz Flight Engineer for the 12th Expedition to the ISS launched on September 30, 2005.

Jeff Williams is the Expedition 13 Flight Engineer and Science Officer aboard the International Space Station. The Expedition 13 crew was launched on March 29, 2006 on the Russian Soyuz TMA 8 from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, docking with the station on March 31, 2006, to begin a 6-month tour of duty aboard the station.

SPACE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE: STS-101 Atlantis (May 19-29, 2000) was the third Shuttle mission devoted to International Space Station (ISS) construction. Objectives included transporting and installing over 5,000 pounds of equipment and supplies, and included Williams’ first EVA (space walk) lasting nearly 7 hours. The mission was accomplished in 155 orbits of the Earth, traveling 4.1 million miles in 236 hours and 9 minutes.

THOMAS REITER
ASTRONAUT, EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY

PERSONAL DATA: Born May 23, 1958, in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, Thomas is married and has two sons. He enjoys fencing, badminton, cooking and playing the guitar.

EDUCATION: Thomas Reiter has a Masters Degree in aerospace technology. He graduated from Goethe-High School in Neu-Isenburg in June 1977, from the Armed Forces University in Neubiberg in December 1982 and from the Empire Test Pilots School (EPTS) in Boscombe Down, England, in December 1992.

EXPERIENCE : After completion of military jet training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, Thomas Reiter flew the Alpha-Jet in a fighter-bomber squadron based in Oldenburg, Germany. He was involved in the development of computerized mission planning systems and became a flight-operations officer and deputy squadron commander. After completing the test-pilot training Class 2 at the German flight test center in Manching during 1990, Reiter was involved in several flight test projects and conversion training on the Tornado the following year. Reiter attended the Class 1 test pilot training at ETPS, Boscombe Down, in 1992. His flight experience includes more than 2300 hours in military combat jet aircraft of more than 15 types.

Thomas Reiter was also involved in European Space Agency (ESA) studies of a manned space vehicle (Hermes) and development of equipment for the Columbus module, one of Europe’s main contributions to the International Space Station.

In 1992, he was selected to join ESA’s Astronaut Corps, based at the European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne, Germany. After completing basic training, Reiter was selected for the Euromir 95 mission and started training at TsPK (Cosmonauts Training Center) in Star City near Moscow in August 1993, preparing for on-board engineer tasks, extravehicular activities and operations of the Soyuz transportation system. The Euromir 95 experiment training was organized and mainly carried out at the EAC.

In March 1995 he was assigned on-board engineer for the Euromir 95 mission, a record-breaking 179 days on ESA's Euromir 95 mission (September 3, 1995 to February 29, 1996) with two spacewalks (EVAs).

Between October 1996 and July 1997, Reiter underwent training on Soyuz-TM spacecraft operations for de-docking, atmospheric re-entry and landing. He was awarded the Russian 'Soyuz Return Commander' certificate, which qualifies him to command a three-person Soyuz capsule during its return from space.

Furthermore, he performed collateral duties in the European Robotic Arm team of ESA, which is developing the European Robotic Arm and its ground-based test and mission control equipment.

From September 1997 to March 1999, Reiter was detached to the German Air Force as Operational Group Commander of a Tornado fighter bomber wing. After his return to ESA he gave support to the ATV team and the ERA program. He continued training at the Russian Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City from June 1999 until March 2000 for the Russian segments of the International Space Station.

Within the Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Exploration he worked the last three years in the Columbus program.

On April 1, 1999 he resumed his activities at the European Astronaut Center, Cologne, Germany.

In April 2001 he was assigned to the first ISS advanced training class to prepare for one of the first European long-term flights on-board ISS.

In September 2004, Thomas Reiter was assigned to a long duration mission to the International Space Station and will fly aboard Discovery on Space Shuttle mission STS-121. He will return to Earth aboard the Shuttle mission STS-116 or a Russian Soyuz.

SPACE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE: ESA-Russian Euromir 95 mission to the Mir Space Station, along with Russian colleagues Yuri Gidzenko and Serguei Avdeev. Reiter was assigned as on-board engineer for the record-breaking 179 days mission (September 3, 1995 until February 29, 1996). He performed some 40 European scientific experiments and participated in the maintenance of the Mir Space Station. He performed two spacewalks (EVAs) to install and later retrieve cassettes of the European Space Exposure Facility experiments (ESEF).

PERSONAL DATA: Born March 11, 1963 in Bauru, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Married to the former Francisca de Fatima Cavalcanti of Angicos, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. They have two children. Recreational interests include weight lifting, soccer, guitar and piano, sketching, watercolor painting. His parents, Vergilio and Zuleika Pontes, reside in Bauru, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her father, Praxedes Cavalcanti, resides in Angicos, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Her mother, Maria Emilia Cavalcanti, is deceased.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Liceu Noroeste High School, Bauru, Sao Paulo in 1980; received a bachelor of science in aeronautical technology from the Brazil Air Force Academy, Pirassununga, Sao Paulo in 1984, a bachelor of science in aeronautical engineering, from the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica, Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo in 1993, and a master of science degree in Systems Engineering from Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California in 1998.

AWARDS: Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, and Santos Dumont Medal.

SPECIAL HONORS: Graduated with Distinction Instituto Technologico de Aeronautica; received the Space and Aeronautics Institute Award and the EMBRAER (Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica) Award in 1994 for Test Pilot Training. Air Force University Award in 1995. Graduated with Distinction Naval Postgraduate School.

EXPERIENCE: Pontes graduated as a military pilot from the Brazil Air Force Academy, Pirassununga, Sao Paulo, in 1984. After one year of advanced jet training at the 2/5 Instruction Aviation Group, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, he was assigned to 3/10 Strike Aviation Group, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. As a military pilot, he was qualified as an instructor for Ground Attack missions and Attack’s Advanced Air Controlling. As a Flight Safety Officer, his work experience included 14 years in aeronautical accident investigation. From 1989 to 1993 he attended Aeronautical Engineering course, followed by a one year Test Pilot course. As a test pilot he worked on weapons development, missile tests and aircraft evaluation. He has logged over 1,900 flight hours in more than 20 different aircraft, including F-15, F-16, F18 and MIG-29. In 1996, he was assigned to the Naval Postgraduate School. Pontes graduated from Naval Postgraduate School when he was selected for the astronaut program.

NASA EXPERIENCE: In August 1998, he reported to the Johnson Space Center to attend Astronaut Training which includes orientation briefings and tours, numerous scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in Shuttle and International Space Station systems, physiological training and ground school to prepare for T-38 flight training, as well as learning water and wilderness survival techniques. Pontes was initially assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Space Station Operations Branch.

Pontes is first Brazilian astronaut to go into space. He launched with the Expedition-13 crew from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on March 29, 2006 aboard a Soyuz TMA spacecraft, docking with the station on March 31, 2006, where he lived and worked for the next 8-days. Pontes returned to earth with the Expedition-12 crew landing in the steppes of Kazakhstan in their Soyuz spacecraft on April 8, 2006.


 Edward Michael “Mike” Fincke (Lieutenant Colonel, USAF)
NASA Astronaut

PERSONAL DATA: Born March 14, 1967 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but considers Emsworth, Pennsylvania to be his hometown. Married to the former Renita Saikia of Houston, Texas. They have two children. In addition to time with his family, Mike enjoys travel, Geology, Astronomy, learning new languages, and reading. He is conversant in Japanese and Russian. His parents, Edward and Alma Fincke reside in Emsworth, Pennsylvania. Renita’s parents, Rupesh and Probha Saikia formerly of Assam, India reside in Houston, Texas.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Sewickley Academy, Sewickley, Pennsylvania in 1985. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on an Air Force ROTC scholarship and graduated in 1989 with a bachelor of science in Aeronautics and Astronautics as well as a bachelor of science in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. This was followed by a master of science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University in 1990. He was awarded associates of science degree in Earth Sciences (Geology) from El Camino College in Torrance, California in 1993 and then a second master of science in Physical Sciences (Planetary Geology) from the University of Houston, Clear Lake in 2001.

ORGANIZATIONS: Geological Society of America (GSA), British Interplanetary Society.

SPECIAL HONORS: In addition to a NASA Distinguished Service Medal and a NASA Spaceflight Medal, Lt Col Fincke is a recipient of the first ISS Leadership Award as well as a United States Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, three Commendation Medals, two Achievement Medals, and various unit and service awards. He is a Distinguished Graduate from the United States Air Force ROTC, Squadron Officer School, and Test Pilot School Programs and the recipient of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School Colonel Ray Jones Award as the top Flight Test Engineer/Flight Test Navigator in class 93B.

EXPERIENCE: Lt. Col. Mike Fincke graduated from MIT in 1989, and immediately attended a summer exchange program with the Moscow Aviation Institute in the former Soviet Union, where he studied Cosmonautics. Upon graduation from Stanford University in 1990, he entered the United States Air Force. After “washing-out” of pilot training in 1991, he was reassigned to the Air Force Space and Missiles Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California. There he served as a Space Systems Engineer and a Space Test Engineer. In 1994, upon completion of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School Flight Test Engineer Program, Edwards Air Force Base, California, he joined the 39th Flight Test Squadron, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, where he served as a Flight Test Engineer working on a variety of flight test programs, flying in F-16 and F-15 aircraft. In January of 1996, he reported to the Gifu Test Center, Gifu Air Base, Japan where he was the United States Flight Test Liaison to the Japanese/United States XF-2 fighter program.

Lt Col Fincke has over 825 flight hours in more than 30 different aircraft types.

NASA EXPERIENCE: Selected by NASA in April 1996, Lt. Col. Fincke reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1996. Having completed two years of training and evaluation, he was assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Station Operations Branch serving as an International Space Station Spacecraft Communicator (ISS CAPCOM), a member of the Crew Test Support Team in Russia and as the ISS crew procedures team lead. He also served as back-up crewmember for ISS Expedition-4 and Expedition-6 and is qualified to fly as a left-seat Flight Engineer (co-pilot) on the Russian Soyuz TM and TMA spacecraft. He is currently the back-up Commander for ISS Expedition-13.

SPACE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE: ISS Expedition-9 (April 18 to Oct 23, 2004). Expedition-9 was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan aboard the Soyuz TMA-4 spacecraft, docking with the International Space Station on April 21, 2004. As the NASA Space Station science officer and flight engineer, Lt. Col. Fincke spent six-months aboard the ISS continuing ISS science operations, maintaining Station systems, and performing four spacewalks. The Expedition-9 mission concluded with undocking from the station and safe landing back in Kazakhstan on October 23, 2004. Lt. Col. Fincke completed his first mission in 187 days, 21 hours and 17 minutes, and logged a total of 15 hours, 45 minutes and 22 seconds of EVA time in four spacewalks.


NAME: Fyodor Nikolayevich Yurchikhin (Ph.D.)
RSC Energia Test-Cosmonaut

PERSONAL DATA: Born January 3, 1959, in Batumi, Autonomous Republic of Ajara in Georgia. Married to Larisa Anatolievna Yurshikina, born in Shyolkovo, Moscow region. They have two daughters. His father, Nikolai Fyodorovich Yurchikhin, and mother, Mikrula Sofoklevna Yurchikhina, reside in Sindos, Greece. He also has a brother, 2 years younger. Hobbies include collecting stamps and space logos, sports, history of cosmonautics, and promotion of space. He also enjoys reading history, science fiction and the classics.

EDUCATION: After graduation from high school in Batumi in 1976, he entered the Moscow Aviation Institute named after Sergey Ordzhonikidze. He finished studying in 1983, and is qualified as a mechanical engineer, specializing in airspace vehicles. In 2001, he graduated from the Moscow Service State University with a Ph.D. in economics.

EXPERIENCE: After graduating from the S. Ordzhonikidze Moscow Aviation Institute, Yurchikhin worked at the Russian Space Corporation Energia from September 1983 until August 1997. He began working as a controller in the Russian Mission Control Center, and held the positions of engineer, senior engineer, and lead engineer, eventually becoming a lead engineer for Shuttle-Mir and NASA-Mir Programs.

In August 1997, he was enrolled in the RSC Energia cosmonaut detachment as a cosmonaut-candidate.

From January 1998 to November 1999, he completed his basic training course. In November 1999, he was qualified as a test cosmonaut. In January 2000, he started training in the test-cosmonaut group for the ISS program.

In October 2002, Fyodor Yurchikhin flew aboard STS-112. In completing his first space flight he has logged a total of 10 days, 19 hours, and 58 minutes in space.

SPACE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE: STS-112 Atlantis (October 7-18, 2002) launched from and returned to land at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. STS-112 was an International Space Station assembly mission during which the crew conducted joint operations with the Expedition-5 by delivering and installing the S-One Truss (the third piece of the station's 11-piece Integrated Truss Structure). Three spacewalks were required to outfit and activate the new component. The crew also transferred cargo between the two vehicles and used the shuttle's thruster jets during two maneuvers to raise the station's orbit. STS-112 was the first shuttle mission to use a camera on the External Tank, providing a live view of the launch to flight controllers and NASA TV viewers. The STS-112 mission was accomplished in 170 orbits, traveling 4.5 million miles in 10 days, 19 hours, and 58 minutes.

Vazno je da oni stignu natrag...jer ako im je pena koja je otpala napravila stetu vrlo su blizu da ponove misiju "Kolumbija". Sto se maskiranja tice, nikad ne znas sta sve mogu da smuljaju ove dve zemlje. Ipak je Rusija u poslednjih decenija zaostala sa svemirskim istrazivanjima u odnosu na Amere. Pa je moguce da su se udruzili sa njima, da bi i dalje bili ucestali u takvim poduhvatima. Ko ce znati, sta se tacno desava.....?

Naravno da nisu....
Upravo sam na to mislio, da bi saradnjom sa Ameriko Rusi postali nesto ucestaliji u svemiru, a Ameri nesto napredniji.

NASA za jedan dan produžila misiju Discoveryja

NASA je najavila da za jedan dan produžuje misiju u orbiti raketoplana Discovery kako bi dvojici astronauta omogućila treći izlazak u svemir, objavio je dužnosnik američke svemirske agencije John Shannon.

Ta očekivana odluka znači da će misija Discoverya trajati 13 umjesto 12 dana. Posada raketoplana smanjit će se pri povratku na Zemlju na šest osoba, budući da njemački astronaut Thomas Reiter treba ostati u Međunarodnoj svemirskoj postaji (ISS) s kojom se raketoplan spojio u četvrtak.

Uprava misije još nije mogla u petak navečer potvrditi jesu li krhotine izbačene prilikom laniranja oštetile termički omotač raketoplana.

Iako su uglavnom zadovoljni stanjem raketoplana, dužnosnici misije su i dalje oprezni u očekivanju rezultata aerodinamičkih i termičkih analiza s tri sumnjiva mjesta.
