"Русские витязи"



The Russian Knights aerobatic team was created on 5 April 1991 and manned by the best pilots of the Kubinka Air Force base, who had fully mastered the piloting of the 4th generation Su-27 fighter. The team is organic to the Russian Air Force 237th Aircraft Demonstration Centre named after Air Force Marshal Ivan Kozhedub (Russian acronym - TsPAT).
Across the world, aerobatic teams that fly sports and trainer aircraft or even light fighters are aplenty. The Russian Knights are unique owing to their being the only aerobatic team flying group aerobatics in heavy fighters. The average weight of the aircraft of the six-plane team totals about 150 t during the aerobatics, with the sum of their wingspan amounting to over 75 m.
The Russian Knights made their foreign debut in September 1991 when they displayed their aerobatics programme in the United Kingdom for the first time. Since that time the Russian Knights have become regular participants of the major airshows all over the world. They visited Malaysia, USA, France, Holland, Canada, Slovakia, Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, and China. The Russian Knights' aerobatics is a true decoration of the MAKS Moscow international airshows held at the Gromov LII airfield in Zhukovsky.
Little can rival the spectacular sight of supersonic aircraft group aerobatics. Aerobatics emerged almost simultaneously with aircraft themselves. Later, the best pilots in the world turned to formation flying. It is well known that the heavier the aircraft, the harder it is controlling it as part of the team. However, the unique performances of the Su-27 added new momentum to the sophistication of aerobatics. Coupled with the superior flying skills of the Kubinka aces, the performance of the Su-27 turns the Russian Knights' flying into a breathtaking show.

From history of The Russian Knights


The Kubinka air force base located 60 km west of Moscow is well known both in Russia and abroad. For years, it has been known as the Air Force installation used for demonstrating advanced combat aircraft to the national and foreign leaders. Kubinka AFB's personnel were first Soviet pilots to fly jet fighters in solo and group aerobatics: as early back as on 1 May 1946 Kubinka aces made their overflight of the Red Square as part of air parade formation. Nowadays, Kubinka AFB is known as the best aerobatics school where the world-renowned Russian Knights and Swifts aerobatics teams are stationed. Meanwhile, Kubinka is a major base of the Russian Air Force in the Moscow region, featuring a 65-year history.
Since 1935, it hosted the 82nd aviation detachment (separate) joined in 1938 by the 11th and 24th air regiments. Personnel of these units field-tested the advanced Yak-1 and LaGG-3 fighters and defended the Soviet capital during the second World War. After WWII, Kubinka AFB was the home base for the 324th Svirskaya fighter air division. In November 1950, it was redeployed to Korea in full, with the base being taken over by the 9th fighter air division. Since 1952, the 234th fighter air regiment - predecessor of the present-day 237th Aircraft Demonstration Centre - has been stationed in Kubinka.
  In May 1989, the 1st squadron of the Centre (then designated as the 237th composite air regiment) received Su-27 fighters. The pilots were quick to familiarise themselves with the new materiel and soon they flew their first training sorties in pairs, troikas and, then, in four-aircraft diamond-shaped formations. The leader of the first 'diamond' was Anatoly Arestov, left and right wingmen were Aleksandr Dyatlov and Ivan Kirsanov respectively, with Vladimir Bukin becoming the tail-end charlie. The Su-27 proved to be much harder to control when manoeuvring as part of a tight formation, compared with the MiG-29. There were several reasons for that, namely: the fighter's heavier weight, larger dimension, inertness, peculiarities of its fly-by-wire control system and, no matter how strange it might seem, its superior aerodynamic characteristics. Problems were in abundance, as was the desire of the pilots to fly the same aerobatics previously flown in Kubinka by the MiG-19, MiG-21, MiG-23 and MiG-29 fighters.
  Early in 1991, the six-aircraft aerobatics team was finally set up. The leader was Vladimir Basov, left wingman - Aleksandr Dyatlov, right wingman - Sergei Ganichev, tail-end charlie - Vladimir Bukin, outer left wingman - Vladimir Bazhenov and outer right wingman - Aleksandr Lichkun. The first foreign tour was to be made to the UK. A decision was made to find a designation for the new unit, devise an emblem, have flight suits made and devise the paintjob for the fighters.
  Thus, on 5 April 1991, the Russian Knights came into being (according to the explanatory dictionary by Ozhegov, Knight (vityaz in Russian) is a valiant, gallant Russian warrior of the ancient times). As early back as in September 1991, the Russian Knights flew to the United Kingdom. Then came the tours of Malaysia, the US, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Slovakia, Belgium, Luxembourg. Everywhere the Russian Knights would earn the applause of the public. This was the case at another Malaysian air show, too, in December 1995. However, not all of the Knights were destined to come back to Kubinka then.
  On 12 December 1995, when approaching the Kam Ranh airfield (Vietnam) in adverse weather for refuelling, three fighters of the Russian Knights team flew into a mountain due to unsatisfactory leadership of those in charge. Lives of four pilots - Guards Colonel Boris Grigoryev, Guards Lieutenant-Colonels Nikolai Grechanov, Nikolai Kordyukov and Aleksandr Syrovoy - were snuffed out. The pilots were buried at the cemetery of the Village of Nikolskoye (vic. Kubinka AFB). In October 1996, a monument was installed on the grave of the Russian Knights lost to the above incident.
  The Knights seemed to never recover from the tragedy. Both in Russia and abroad few believed that the Russian Knights would get back on their feet and resume flying. The doubting Thomases proved wrong. A new 'diamond' of four Su-27s sporting a new bright paintjob and flown by Aleksandr Lichkun, Vladimir Kovalsky, Sergei Klimov and Vladimir Bukin performed in September 1996 during the Gelendzhik '96 hydro-aviation air show. In 1997, a six-aircraft formation took to the air. Igor Tkachenko became the left outer wingman, with Ivan Kirsanov becoming the right one. In June 1997, following an 18-month break in their tours, the Russian Knights flew abroad again. After the Kam Ranh tragedy, they paid visits to Austria, Slovakia, France and China.
  Life goes on, and the Russian Knights keep on making their Russian and foreign fans happy by their performance.

"Стрижи"

The Strizhi are a Soviet and later Russian aerobatic performance demonstrator team connected with the Russian Air Force.

In July 1983 the 234 Guards Fighter Regiment based in Kubinka air base was among the first regular aviation regiments to receive 4th generation fighters Mig-29. Regiment started tailoring a team of military pilots, boasting perfect aerobatic techniques, to carry out demonstration flights on Mig-29s in the mid-1980s, when the Air Force was just embarking on mastering aircraft of this type. Military pilots, headed by Lieutenant Colonel A.N. Kutuzov, an Honorary Military Pilot of Russia, were tasked with perfecting aerobatics in a formation of six aircraft sometimes spaced three metres apart.
  The team is considered to have officially been established on May 6, 1991, when it carried out demonstration flights under the name of Swifts or Strizhi (Russian: Стрижи) for the first time. After the show Air Marshal Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub personally decorated pilots of the aerobatic team with medals "For Strengthening Combat Commonwealth Between States"
  In October 1991 the Strizhi aerobatic team carried out its first demonstration flights abroad, when it paid a visit to the Swedish Uppsala airbase. The Strizhi first public foreign demonstration took place in France in May 1992 during the air show, devoted to the 50th anniversary of the Normandy-Neman squadron. The aerobatic team's airmanship amazed experienced western public. The tight six-aircraft formation carried out almost every aerobatic stunt: oblique loop, loop-the-loop, barrel roll, etc. The flight formations constantly changed as well: the echelon formation transformed into the "envelope", the "cross", the "pyramid", the "wing", and the "star" formations. The demonstration flight ended with a spectacular break-up of aircraft to various directions, the so-called "tulip" break-up, followed by a volley of flares, fired by fighters.
  In 1993 the Strizhi took part in the LIMA'93 air show on the island of Langkawi in Malaysia, as well as air shows in Belgium and Thailand. At the Thailand air show the team's aircraft mechanics set something of a record in assembling aircraft: four Mig-29s were dismantled and delivered to Thailand aboard an An-124 air transport, and Russian aircraft technicians and mechanics managed to get them operational within only three days. In 1995 the Strizhi visited Sweden once again, and in 1997 the team paid a visit to Finland.
  The Strizhi aerobatic team has conducted 50 demonstration flights on an annual basis since 1991. Its pilots have visited in excess of 28 foreign states. The team traditionally participates in Tushino air parades and Zhukovsky air shows. The team's pilots have repeatedly carried out demonstration flights during numerous celebrations, devoted to anniversaries of various cities, including the 850th anniversary of Moscow.
  In 1993 the Strizhi aerobatic team merited the title of the World's Best Aerobatic Team, while in 1997 Nikolay Dyatel won the first prize in solo flying at the international air show in Finland.

"Небесные Гусары"

    Появившаяся два с лишним года назад еще одна пилотажная группа из Кубинки первоначально готовилась к выступлениям на авиашоу на самолетах Су-24М, -22 и -25. От этой идеи, правда, вскоре пришлось отказаться из-за трудностей в эксплуатации и обслуживании сразу трех типов самолетов. Выбор остановили на шестнадцатитонном штурмовике Су-25. Так Небесные гусары стали первой в мире пилотажной группой, занимающейся воздушной акробатикой на боевых серийных машинах класса штурмовик.
      Костяк группы составили полковник Александр Смирнов, подполковник Александр Горнов, майоры Владимир Галуненко и Геннадий Авраменко. Помимо одиночного Гусары выполняют также синхронный и встречный пилотаж в составе четырех самолетов Су-25. Хотя штурмовик сложен в пилотировании, летчики творят на нем буквально чудеса: бочку, нож, горку с углом 60°... Как считают сами асы, в пилотаже они способны на большее. Но сдерживает ограничение по перегрузке в 6,5 единиц (у Стрижей и Русских витязей - 8-9). По своей раскраске Небесные гусары близки к Русским витязям: все самолеты - бело-красно-голубого тона. Фюзеляж Су-25 украшает эмблема: круг, на белом фоне которого в виде ромба расположены четыре штурмовика, чуть ниже - скрещенные гусарские сабли, по краям круга надпись: Небесные гусары, Кубинка. И в этом случае эмблема и раскраска самолета - плод творчества самих пилотов. Несмотря на короткую биографию, Небесные гусары уже заявили о себе: их пилотажное мастерство признано зрителями не одного десятка авиашоу. Правда, пока только в России - за рубежом они не выступали.
      В скором времени пилотажной группы Небесные гусары, как это ни печально, в Кубинке, вероятнее всего, не станет. В ЦПАТ ожидается реорганизация, согласно которой на базе Небесных гусар будет сформирована эскадрилья подготовки летного состава. Отбор молодых пилотов в Центр показа авиационной техники планируется проводить на конкурсной основе выездными комиссиями в строевых частях и непосредственно на авиабазе в Кубинке. Кандидатом может стать любой военный летчик (фронтовой авиации) 2-го класса и выше в возрасте не старше 30 лет. Прошедшие отбор будут затем проверяться по теоретической и физической подготовке. При условии сдачи экзаменов не ниже отлично их допустят к практической проверке техники пилотирования. И только лучшие из лучших будут зачислены в эскадрилью подготовки летного состава.
