On December 1, 2005, the Armory of the MOSCOW KREMLIN State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve housed a presentation of weapons collection of the Kalashnikov system, which had been transferred by Izhmash for permanent storage to Russia's main arms treasury as part of the celebrations of the 5th anniversary of Rosoboronexport State Corporation held on November 3, 2005.

The unique collection comprising 18 assault rifles, 8 machine guns of the Kalashnikov system, and 3 bayonets was presented personally by Small Arms Chief Designer of Izhmash, Consultant of the Rosoboronexport Director General, Lieutenant General Mikhail Timofeyevich KALASHNIKOV, Doctor of Engineering.

Shortly before that, M. T. Kalashnikov had arrived from France where he, as a member of the Rosoboronexport delegation, participated in the 14th Worldwide Exhibition of Internal State Security – MILIPOL PARIS 2005 – held at Le Bourget, Paris. The numerous meetings and negotiations held by Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov at the exhibition with foreign specialists from Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, China, Poland, USA, Finland, France, Sweden, Republic of South Africa, and several other countries, once again confirmed the great worldwide popularity of his engineering ideas, and the unsurpassed simplicity and reliability of the small arms designed under M. T. Kalashnikov's supervision.

The presentation participants included Y. Yu. Gagarina, Director General of the MOSCOW KREMLIN State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, members of  Rosoboronexport, specialists of the Armory, representatives of Russian political and business groups, as well as foreign and Russian journalists.

Never had there been any specimen of weapons by this great Russian gunmaker held in the Kremlin Museums. According to Y. Yu. Gagarina, "being not only a phenomenon of the engineering thought but also an important factor of the Russia culture, the Kalashnikov weapons has now taken a well-deserved place in the Russian arms treasury, which is a collection and storage of arms made by the world's best engineers and craftsmen. "

The Armory of the Moscow Kremlin has a great honor to have in its storage the following 29 specimens of the wide range of small arms designed by and under the supervision of M. T. Kalashnikov, comprising over 150 various modifications:

    * АK-47 – Kalashnikov assault rifle with a wooden buttstock, caliber 7.62 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1949. Designed to use the intermediate pistol/rifle cartridge. Due to the decreased cartridge capacity, the weight and size of the assault rifle were reduced and the grouping of shots was improved.
    * AKM – modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 7.62 mm. In 1953, the Izhmash plant participated in the competition, organized by the Central Artillery and Missile Department under the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of the Defense Industry, aimed at enhancing fighting and operating characteristics of standard small arms. The work was done by M. T.  Kalashnikov's group. The AKM was based on several technological improvements with an improved grouping of shots as compared with the AK-47 model. The weight was considerably reduced. The buttstock and forearm structure was changed: plywood board was used instead of wood, which ensured greater durability. This model won in the competition and was included in the inventory in 1959.
    * AKMN – modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle with a mount for night sight NSP-2, caliber 7.62 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1959.
    * AKMS – modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle with a folding buttstock, caliber 7.62 mm. It was included in the inventory in 1959 for landing forces.
    * AK-74 – Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 5.45 mm. In 1967, pursuant to the Resolution of the CPSU Central Committee and the USSR Council of Ministers, a competition was organized to design an assault rifle fit to use the new 5.45-mm cartridge. The AK-74 was designed by А. D. Kryakushin's group under the designer supervision of M. T. Kalashnikov. Based on the competition results, this assault rifle was included in the inventory in 1974 as part of the 5.45-mm small arms complex. The cartridge used in the AK-74 weighs 1.5 times less as compared with the 7.62-mm cartridge. The soldier can carry 1.5 times more cartridges without increasing the weight of the portable reserve ammunition. In addition, the bullet speed of the 5.45-mm caliber is higher.
    * AK-74N – Kalashnikov assault rifle with night sight NSPU, caliber 5.45 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1974.
    * AK-74N1 – Kalashnikov assault rifle with a night sight mount, caliber 5.45 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1974.
    * AK-74NЗ – Kalashnikov assault rifle with night sight 1PN51, caliber 5.45 mm. This sight is smaller in size than NSPU: it is twice as short, which considerably improves operating properties, especially its carrying. This model was included in the inventory in 1974.
    * AKS-74 – Kalashnikov assault rifle with a folding buttstock, caliber 5.45 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1974 for landing forces.
    * AKS-74N – Kalashnikov assault rifle with a folding buttstock and night sight NSPU, caliber 5.45 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1974.
    * AKS-74U – shortened Kalashnikov assault rifle with a folding buttstock, caliber 5.45 mm. It was designed by S. N. Furman's group under the designer supervision of M. T. Kalashnikov. Its shortened barrel makes this assault rifle easier to handle and lighter in weight. This model was included in the inventory in 1979.
    * AK-74M – modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 5.45 mm. This model was designed under the supervision of chief designer N. A. Bezborodov and M. T. Kalashnikov, under the technical development plan of the Central Artillery and Missile Department, and included in the inventory in 1991. The AK-74М is based on all four AK-74 modifications. It has a folding plastic buttstock, which is similar to the stationary model in shape, and a lateral base for mounting an optical or night sight.
    * AK-74MP – modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle with optical sight 1P29, caliber 5.45 mm.
    * AK-101 – Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 5.56 mm. This model became the first assault rifle of the "100" series, based on the AK-74М for the most commonly used cartridges and with the use several new design and technological solutions. All assault rifles of the "100" series feature a mount for night and optical sights, and a more durable folding plastic buttstock. They are more convenient for carrying and firing. Like the AK-74М, these assault rifles distinguished by their faultless performance in more difficult operation conditions (lower or higher temperatures, in muddy environment, etc.); optimum technical dispersion when using salvo fire in unstable stances; long service life; easy maintenance and repair (disassembly, assembly, cleaning, lubrication, etc.). These assault rifles have several firing mechanism modifications for fixed three-shot bursts. The AK-101 model is designed for the 5.56-mm cartridge used by NATO states in order to enhance its export potential. One can use both foreign cartridges (M193 and SS109) and the domestic RS101 cartridge which has an improved penetration capacity.
    * AK-102 – Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 5.56 mm. This model is a compact version of the AK-101.
    * AK-103 – Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 7.62 mm. It is designed for the 7.62-mm cartridge of the 1943 model. This model was included in the inventory in 2001.
    * AK-104 – Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 7.62 mm. This model is a compact version of the AK-103. It was included in the inventory in 2001.
    * AK-105 – Kalashnikov assault rifle, caliber 5.45 mm. This model is a compact version of the AK-74М. It was included in the inventory in 2001.
    * RPK – Kalashnikov lightweight machine gun, caliber 7.62 mm. This model is a modified version of the AKM. It features a bipod, a heavier and longer barrel, a modified shape buttstock, with an increased magazine capacity. This model was included in the inventory in 1959.
    * RPKS – Kalashnikov lightweight machine gun with a folding buttstock, caliber 7.62 mm.
    * RPK-74 – Kalashnikov lightweight machine gun based on    the AK-74, caliber 5.45 mm.
    * RPK-S74N2 – Kalashnikov machine gun with a folding buttstock and night sight NSPUM (1PN58), caliber 5.45 mm.
    * PKT – Kalashnikov tank machine gun, caliber 7.62 mm. This is a tank version of the Kalashnikov machine gun complete with a remote control. Its massive barrel ensures a great durability making it possible to endure firing using the ammunition reserve of 250 cartridges. This model was included in the inventory in 1962.
    * PKN – Kalashnikov machine gun with sight NSP-3 (1PN28), caliber 7.62 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1961. This unified Kalashnikov machine gun can be used as a light (bipod-based) or heavy machine gun (carrier-based).
    * PKM – modernized Kalashnikov machine gun, caliber 7.62 mm. This model is significantly more technologically advanced and lighter in weight. This is the world's lightest machine gun of this class. This model was included in the inventory in 1969.
    * PKMN – modernized Kalashnikov machine gun with night sight NSP-3 (1PN28), caliber 7.62 mm. This model was included in the inventory in 1969.
    * 6H3 – knife-bayonet for Kalashnikov assault rifle. It was designed, as per request of the Central Artillery and Missile Department, on the basis of the NR reconnoiter knife and included in the inventory in 1959. It has a metal sheath; a rubber handle, making it possible to cut live wires; and a saw on back edge of the blade.
    * 6H4 – bayonet for the AKM assault rifle. It was designed in the early 1970s due to a transfer to using plastic materials. This bayonet has a plastic sheath, making it possible to cut live uninsulated wires.
    * 6H5 – bayonet assembly. In 1983, the Central Artillery and Missile Department held a competition to design improved bayonets. The bayonet was substantially updated. High-strength molded plastic of the polyamide type makes the 6Х5 bayonet more durable and technologically advanced. It has a double-edged blade.

The presentation held in the Moscow Kremlin has confirmed the unsurpassed genius of Russian gunmakers, and the great contribution of M. T. Kalashnikov in the development of domestic armory art and in upholding Russia's status of a great arms-making country. Smile Smile Smile Smile
