Somali pirates hijack German tanker and seize crew of 13
MV Longchamp, carrying liquefied petroleum gas, is third ship taken this year

Mark Tran, guardian.co.uk, Thursday 29 January 2009 14.01 GMT

Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden hijacked a tanker and its crew of 13 today, despite an increase in western naval forces in the area. The German-owned MV Longchamp, carrying liquefied petroleum gas, is the third ship to be taken this year, a maritime group said.

The Longchamp was hijacked with a crew of 12 Filipinos and one Indonesian, said Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme. It was not clear where the tanker, which was flying the Bahamas flag, was headed. It has a capacity of 3,415 tonnes.

Gunmen have caused havoc in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, hijacking dozens of ships last year and collecting tens of millions of dollars in ransom payments. The attacks have raised insurance costs, prompted some owners to send their ships round South Africa instead of through the Suez canal, and triggered deployments by foreign navies.

Earlier this week, a French frigate arrested nine Somali pirates as part of the growing international effort to protect vessels from pirates.

Acts of piracy jumped 11% in 2008, driven by an unprecedented series of attacks by Somalis in the Gulf of Aden, the International Maritime Bureau said this month. About 20 warships from 14 different countries, including the US, are now patrolling the vast area of the gulf.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991 and its coastline has turned into a haven for pirates, who attacked 111 ships in the gulf last year and seized 42.

In the most dramatic hijacking of recent years, pirates seized the Saudi-owned supertanker Sirius Star last November. Earlier this month, five of the pirates drowned with their share of a reported $3m ransom after their small boat capsized.

Papalu,

Pirates use 'decoy' tactics to capture LPG tanker

David Osler - четвртак 29 јануар 2009

SOMALIAN pirates today captured a German-owned LPG tanker participating in a convoy through the Gulf of Aden Maritime Security Patrol Area, diverting Chinese and Indian warships with a decoy raid to enable colleagues to seize a small ship with low freeboard.

The pirates’ latest victim is the1990-built, 4,316 dwt Longchamp, operated by Hamburg-based Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, with 12 Filipinos and one Indonesian national onboard.

The attack took place in the early hours of this morning while the ship was within the MPSA under military protection, said Schulte quality and safety manager Frank Lesse.

“There were apparently three ships attacked, which diverted the attention of the warships, and unfortunately the ship that was taken hostage by the pirates was the Longchamp.”

“The Indian warship tried to repel the attack but was too late. [Longchamp] is a small LPG with a low freeboard, so she is easy to board. The pirates picked her, went on board, and the other pirates vacated the scene.

“The Indian warship kept a safe distance, so as not to aggravate the pirates. Then the ship turned hard to starboard and went straight for the Somali coast.”

The master was allowed to contact the company’s emergency centre to make a brief statement, and reported that seven pirates were on the ship. The assumption from this is that none of the crew were hurt.

Schulte was at the time of writing still able to track Longchamp, although there had been no further contact with the crew. The Bahamas-flag vessel is the third ship to be captured off Somalia this year.

A takođe stiže i Petar Veliki.

Russian warships call at Syrian port

MOSCOW, January 29 (RIA Novosti) - A group of Black Sea Fleet warships has called at the Syrian port of Tartus, a Russian Navy spokesman said on Thursday.

Capt. 1st Rank Igor Dygalo said the Azov and Yamal landing ships had docked at Tartus to replenish supplies.

He previously said the two warships, which were carrying naval infantry units, would join up with other Russian warships in the Indian Ocean, including the Pyotr Veliky nuclear-powered missile cruiser, for the INDRA-2009 exercise with the Indian Navy in late January.

Russian media recently reported that Russia was planning to set up naval facilities in Yemen (Socotra), Syria (Tartus), Libya (Tripoli), Vietnam (Cam Ranh), among other countries, in the next few years as an alternative to the Sevastopol base in Ukraine's Crimea.

The Soviet-era Navy maintenance site near Tartus is the only Russian foothold in the Mediterranean.

Media reports have suggested the facility could be turned into a base for the country's Black Sea Fleet, which is likely to lose its main base in Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula in 2017.

About 50 naval personnel and three floating piers are reportedly deployed at the Tartus site, which can accommodate up to a dozen warships, and Russia is expanding the port and building mooring facilities in nearby Latakia.

Russian cruiser Pyotr Veliky leaves India

MORMUGAO (India), January 31 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Pyotr Veliky missile cruiser has left the port of Mormugao in the Indian state of Goa and headed for African waters.

The Pyotr Veliky arrived in Mormugao on an unofficial visit January 29 after participating in a PASSEX-type naval exercise in the Indian Ocean with the Indian guided-missile destroyer INS Delhi.

Mormugao is the only port on India's western coast that allows visits by nuclear-powered ships.

After the two-day visit, during which supplies of food and water were taken on board, the Russian cruiser headed for the Somali coast to participate in the second stage of the INDRA-2009 joint naval drills with the Indian Navy, which involves practicing joint anti-piracy operations.

The Pyotr Veliky will join up with a task force from Russia's Pacific Fleet, comprising the Admiral Vinogradov, an Udaloy class destroyer, a tugboat and two fuel tankers, which are carrying out anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden.

The Russian Navy said on Wednesday that the Northern Fleet's Admiral Levchenko destroyer will also participate in the INDRA-2009 exercise.

Pirates have been increasingly active in the waters off Somalia, where over 110 ships were attacked in 2008, with 42 vessels seized and 815 crew members abducted. Up to 20 warships from the navies of at least 10 countries are involved in anti-piracy operations off the coast of the lawless East African nation.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution last December authorizing countries and multinational organizations involved in tackling piracy to "undertake all necessary measures in Somalia, including in its airspace" to prevent "acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea."

Russian warship to call at Italian port
10:16    |    27/ 01/ 2009

Print version

MOSCOW/ROME, January 27 (RIA Novosti) - The guided missile cruiser Moskva, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, will make an unofficial visit to the Italian port of Messina in Sicily on Tuesday, a Russian Navy spokesman said.

The visit is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Messina earthquake and Russia's participation in international relief efforts.

"The crew of the cruiser will participate in international memorial events related to the 100th anniversary of Russia's Baltic Fleet efforts to rescue citizens of Messina following a devastating earthquake," the spokesman said.

In addition to the Russian vessel, U.S., British, German, Spanish and Danish warships will take part in events to mark the anniversary of the Messina earthquake.

The Messina quake had an estimated magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale and was followed by a tsunami that struck many coastal cities with 40-foot (12-meter) waves, causing more destruction. The earthquake and tsunami killed two-thirds of the city's then-150,000 population.

Russian and Italian sailors are to hold joint drills in the Strait of Messina on Friday, the spokesman added.

Russian destroyer leaves Baltic base on urgent mission-2
18:44    |    21/ 01/ 2009

KALININGRAD/MOSCOW, January 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russian missile destroyer Admiral Chabanenko left a naval shipyard in the country's Kaliningrad exclave on an urgent mission after having hurried repair work carried out, a shipyard spokesman said on Wednesday.

"Admiral Chabanenko urgently left the Baltiisk naval base on January 20 after receiving orders for a mission of state importance," Sergei Mikhailov said.

Following the statement, a Russian military-diplomatic source told RIA Novosti that the destroyer was heading to the Mediterranean for combat training.

"The Admiral Chabanenko destroyer has received orders from Navy Headquarters to head for the Mediterranean to accomplish a number of combat training tasks," the source said, adding that it may continue to the Gulf of Aden.

A Russian Navy source said earlier that the warship would join the Admiral Vinogradov missile destroyer from Russia's Pacific Fleet, which is currently on an anti-piracy mission in the waters off the Horn of Africa.

Chabanenko docked for repairs at the Yantar shipyard on January 15 after its recent Latin American tour-of-duty. The original repair schedule, including the overhaul of the propulsion system, envisioned the work being finished by the end of February.

The Northern Fleet destroyer accompanied the Pyotr Veliky nuclear-powered missile cruiser on a tour of the Atlantic and the Caribbean, participating in joint naval exercises with the Venezuelan navy, passing through the Panama Canal, and visiting a number of Latin American countries, including Cuba.

The Admiral Chabanenko, an Udaloy II class missile destroyer, entered service with the Russian Navy in January 1999. It is Russia's only multipurpose destroyer and is intended to be the counterpart to U.S. Arleigh Burke class ships.

Designed primarily as an anti-submarine warfare platform, with a long cruising range and underway replenishment capabilities, Udaloy class ships provide support to surface task forces.

The Udaloy II is modified by the replacement of the SS-N-14 Silex anti-submarine missiles by the SS-N-22 Sunburn anti-ship missiles, reflecting a change in emphasis from anti-submarine warfare to surface combat.

Chinese warships set sail for anti-piracy mission off Somalia

A ceremony is held before a Chinese naval fleet sets sail from a port in Sanya city of China's southernmost island province of Hainan on Dec. 26, 2008. The Chinese naval fleet including two destroyers and a supply ship from the South China Sea Fleet set off on Friday for waters off Somalia for an escort mission against piracy.(Xinhua/Zha Chunming)

TOKYO, Dec 26 (KUNA) - Chinese warships set sail on Friday from a port on the southern island Hainan for Somalian to take part in an escort mission against piracy, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Two destroyers and the supply ship will cruise for about 10 days to arrive in the Gulf of Aden, joining the multinational patrol in one of the world's busiest sea lanes where surging piracy endangers international shipping, Xinhua said.

This marks the first time Chinese warships have patrolled outside of Chinese waters since the formation of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

The fleet will carry about 800 crew members, including 70 soldiers from the Navy's special force. It's equipped with missiles, cannons and light weapons.
nia military news and military technology around the world

"All crew members have full confidence in their ability to fulfill the escort mission," the commander, Rear-Admiral Du Jingchen, told Xinhua at a send-off ceremony before the fleet departed.

The escort fleet will protect Chinese vessels and crews, including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, that seek protection when passing through the area, as well as foreign ships upon request.

The first phase of the mission will last for three months and the navy will send new ships to relieve the fleet at an appropriate time, depending on the situation and the UN Security Council decision, according to the report.

It will also help ships carrying humanitarian relief for international organizations such as the UN World Food Program.

The Defense Ministry officially announced the deployment on Tuesday, saying that China will observe UN resolutions and international laws in fulfilling its obligations.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao said 1,265 Chinese commercial vessels had passed through the Gulf of Aden so far this year and seven had been attacked. One fishing ship and 18 crew members were still being held by pirates.

Britain, France, Germany and Russia have already deployed destroyers and other naval vessels off Somalia to counter rampant piracy.(mk.ema)
