What One Must Know Before Getting Into Basketball Basketball is a fun sport to play when you are really good at the skills necessary to help your team. Perhaps you would like to better your skills and that is why you're here? Really practice the types of shots that you'd get in a typical game experience. Yes, it's fun to play HORSE and try crazy shots, but that's not prepping you for actual game play. Though much of the game is sure to be played within a zone pattern, the opposition may try to go man-to-man in order to confuse you. If you have not practiced against this, you may lose your grip of the game for the remainder of it. Keep in mind that basketball shoes don't last forever. Ask questions at the store or do research to find out just how many games or months a good pair should last before needing replacement. You need to feel safe in the quality of your footwear when moving on the court. When prepping for the basketball season, walk around with the basketball as often as you can. Take the time to throw the ball from one hand to the other, and even flip it around your back. Your goal is to improve your hand/ball coordination so that the ball feels as if it's part of you. Use two hands when trying to make shots. Have both thumbs on the ball so that they are almost touching. Put the ball over your head but be sure you are able to see what you are aiming for. When you shoot, aim for the backboard or give it a backspin by rolling your hands down while shooting. Learn how to do a crossover if you plan to be in possession of the ball a lot. Crossovers are when you move the ball from one hand to the other while dribbling. If done quickly, the opposition won't be able to get the ball away from you as you can pass it to the side they are not on. If you want to become a better basketball player, exercise your forearms and your wrists whenever you possibly can. This will significantly help you with your ball handing and control. A strong dribbler always has strong forearms. Practice wrist curls in your exercise routine to improve forearm and wrist strength. To improve ball handling, consider focusing workouts on your forearms and hands. Wrist curls are great for bettering your ball handling in basketball to the point where you could practically do it sleepwalking. Don't just think you're able to stand around, catch the ball and then shoot it. Things rarely happen unless you are actually moving the basketball. If you want to become a better dribbler, do it blindfolded. If you aren't using your eyes to watch where the ball is, you can instead use them to see where other players are or where the net is. If, however, you are doing this on the opponent's end of the court and leaving them with numbers while you get back to your feet, you should just let it go out of bounds. When you are practicing your shooting, take the practice shots you would attempt during the game.  You are rarely going to be open for long enough to get your feet planted and line up the shot, so shoot on the move.  Practice off dribble and shooting while moving for better results at game time.

Try practice rebound drills that will help you learn to rebound outside your area in basketball.  Great rebounders will try to get the ball no matter its location.  Poor rebounders will remain still and watch the ball since they think they can't reach it.  To learn rebounding out of your area, run some drills that causes the ball to go far away from you.  One way is to throw it off the back board and go after it.

Your balance is an important aspect to consider when you are shooting.  While the all-time greats have shown time and time again how they can shoot while off-kilter, this is not the ideal way to score.  They improvise to do that.  By focusing on balance in your shot, you will develop the consistency needed to be a great scorer.

Don't just practice offense.  Unlike some other sports, coaching basketball players need to play both offense and defense constantly.  There are no breaks in the game, and a great shooter can negate his or her benefit to the team by being a very poor defender.  You need to become good on both ends of the court.

Even though you may miss ten times in a row, you will succeed eventually.  Keep calm and focus on your form instead of letting your emotions get to you.  This will help you develop good habits and grow as a player.  Each shot you take is unique and has nothing to do with the previous ten shots you just missed.

Footwork is what gets you ready for a shot.  Focus on positioning yourself more quickly than the opposing player is just as important as having someone beneath the hoop.  Once you have a location, it is important that your feet are firmly planted there.  Both of those skills rely on solid footwork.

Shoot at least a hundred free throws every day.  Not only does this make you a better free throw shooter, but it helps all your shooting.  You can step on a court any day of the week familiar with the sight and sound of you putting the ball in the goal.  This gives you serious mental confidence, regardless of how or where you actually shoot.

If you want to improve your jump shot, try shooting free throws blindfolded or with your eyes closed.  Your free throw percentage ought to be pretty good before you try this.  However, once it is, you can use this technique to really get down a fluid and instinctive shooting motion with your arms and body.  Just make sure to do this alone in a gym, as to not errantly hurt anyone or break a window.

To develop an accurate shooting stroke, put your dominant hand under the ball and use your other hand on the side of the ball, as a guide.  If you develop this consistency, you will be able to follow through with your shooting hand and get a high, looping arc that is more likely to go through the hoop.

Vision is one of the most important aspects of basketball.  Specifically your peripheral vision is an area that you need to work on improving.  You will be able to read the defense, see open teammates and locate scoring opportunities if you can learn to use your peripheral vision during the game.

Try to place the air valve of the ball in the middle of your hand when you are taking a shot.  This is the center of the ball and therefore the perfect center for your shot.  If you can do this, you will find you have better control of the ball.

To become a better rebounder in basketball you need to understand how to box out your opponent.  The best way to box out your opponent so you can grab the ball off a missed shot is to get your body in front of him or her.  Make sure you shield this person from the basket, this lets you grab the carom off the backboard and rim.
