A'dal
A'Dal is a member of the Naaru and leader of the faction known as the Sha'tar. After the Draenei were forced to abandon Shattrath City which had been reduced to ruin, (Shattrath City has previously been considered the Draenei capital - that role is now filled by The Exodar) the Sha'tar were drawn to Shattrath and A'dal chose to use it as their base of operations against the Burning Legion. A'dal is also responsible for deciding on a regular basis which faction, the Aldor or the Scryers, is sent to assist the Naaru known as Xi'ri in Shadowmoon Valley.
A line from Khadgar seems to state that A'dal's sheer force of will is enough to keep their enemies at bay, giving hints to the power the Naaru and The Sha'tar hold.

Aedelas Blackmoore
Aedelas Blackmoore was a lieutenant (later Lieutenant General) in the Alliance army who raised the son of Durotan, and future Horde warchief, Thrall. Intending to subjugate the Orcs and in turn his fellow humans, Aedelas trained Thrall as a powerful gladiator. Finally, he was killed by Thrall himself for acts of tyranny against the Orcs and killing his own mistress (Thrall's childhood friend) Taretha Foxton.

Aegwynn (Magna Aegwynn)
Main article: Aegwynn
Magna Aegwynn, Matriarch of Tirisfal, bears the secret guilt for all the misfortune that has befallen Azeroth. The Order of Tirisfal was originally forged by the High Elves to secretly protect the world from demonic corruption of magic, hoping to avoid the folly of their ancestors. These Guardians were given considerable power and longevity.
When the order was extended to humans after they too began to learn magic, it was kept as a secret Order amongst only the greatest magi. But over time, the Guardian became a puppet of the Order, and the focus was lost. The Guardian became a warden on all who practiced magic.
When Aegwynn became the Guardian, however, she refused to be manipulated. She remained focused on the matter at hand - the demonic powers at play in Azeroth.

The queen of all the dragons, she was held captive by an Orc Warlock named Nekros Skullcrusher, by means of a special artifact called the "Demon Soul". She was forced to breed and her young fought against the Alliance.
She was able to escape her enslavement by the assistance of a young human mage named Rhonin and her favored consort, the dragon Korialstrasz also known as Krasus, when in his human mage form. She killed her former captor, thus ending the final bastion of Orc power during the Second War.

Alleria Windrunner.
Alleria Windrunner was a hero of Warcraft II, the sister of Sylvanas Windrunner, and Vereesa Windrunner, hero of the Day of the Dragon.
Alleria was featured in Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, where she is first escorted by the Paladin Turalyon and Danath to New Stormwind Keep. Then, she and her allies are seen defending Human towns and fortifications from the oncoming Orc threat.
Her whereabouts after Beyond the Dark Portal are unknown, and she is speculated to be either dead or to have barely made it to safety (as in the case of Khadgar and his companions). A huge statue stands in her honor at Stormwind during World of Warcraft, which seems to suggest that she died on Draenor when the world tore apart, but the statue's plaque indicates that her fate is unknown to those of Stormwind, and that she is simply assumed to be dead (effectively "Missing In Action".)
It is known that she survived at least for a time after Beyond the Dark Portal, at least long enough to give birth to a son (by Turalyon) and move him to a safe place. Her son, Arator the Redeemer, is an adult as of Burning Crusade, and a High Elf/Human mixed Paladin.

Azshara
Main article: Azshara

Before and during the first coming of the burning legion, Azshara was queen of the Night elves. She became obsessed with the Arcane and Demonic Magics, eventually opening a portal for the demons' crossing into Azeroth. She formed a group of Arcane wizards to help her, named the Highborne. (In Richard A. Knaak's "War of the Ancients", the hero Wizard Rhonin and the dragon mage Korialstrasz [also known as Krasus, when in his human form] are transported back in time, where they change history.) When the City of Zin-Azshari sank in the Sundering, Azshara was contacted by the Old Gods, who then transformed her, and her most trusted lieutenants into the Naga. Queen Azshara now resides in the vast naga capital of Nazjatar (formerly Zin-Azshari)at the bottom of the ocean, under a vast whirlpool known as the Maelstrom. Broxigar (Brox)

An Orc veteran, sent by Warchief Thrall to investigate a strange vision by a shaman. Broxigar ended up being sent back in time along with the human wizard Rhonin and dragon-mage Krasus to fight the first war against the Burning Legion.

During the final battle against the Legion, he jumped into the vortex to the Twisting Nether and held off the demons long enough for Rhonin and Krasus to collapse the portal. He was killed by Sargeras himself after managing to wound the titan with the axe given to him by Cenarius. Krasus returned the axe to Thrall and told the Warchief of Broxigar's heroic death.

It should also be noted that Mannoroth took great interest in the Orc, seeing potential in him, most likely leading the Pit Lord to seek out the world that had more of them (although why it took him thosands of years to find it is as yet unexplained). Currently Broxigar's brother the High Warlord Saurfang wields his mighty axe.

C'thun

One of the primal Old Gods of Azeroth who were chained beneath the earth by the Titans in eons past. The Old Gods, who until this point have never been named, were beings of terrible power, and unfathomable evil. They lived only for malice and destruction which was facilitated by their Elemental Lieutenants which include Ragnaros the Firelord, Therazane the Earthmother, Neptulon the Tidehunter, and Al'Akir the Windlord. C'thun was responsible for the creation of the Qiraji and the Silithid armies they command.

It has been speculated that the Forgotten One mini-boss of The Frozen Throne was an imprisoned Old God similar to C'thun, or even an incarnation of C'thun. The reasoning behind this is that C'thun looks remarkably similar to the Forgotten One. In World of Warcraft, C'thun appears as the final boss of the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.

It is unknown if the C'thun players fight against is at full power; there are numerous references that indicate that he isn't "complete". People often use this as evidence to explain why Kel'Thuzad is stronger than C'thun, as logic dictates that an Old God at full strength would be a greater foe.

Dath'Remar Sunstrider

First leader of the High Elves of Lordaeron. Originally one of Queen Azshara's night elf Highborne, he and a small group of renegade Highborne aided in the escape of High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind from the fallen capital of Zin-Azshari during the War of the Ancients. They were subsequently permitted to rejoin the legions of the Night Elf defenders, though they never fully regained the Night Elves' trust. Several centuries later, the remaining Highborne were exiled from Kalimdor by the Night Elf Druids (led by Malfurion Stormrage) for using the forbidden magics of the Well of Eternity. Leading the Highborne forces across The Great Sea, Dath'Remar landed his fleet on the shores of the continent which would later be known by men as Lordaeron. The Highborne (now renamed by themselves the High Elves) founded their kingdom of Quel'Thalas in the north of the continent and constructed their capital city of Silvermoon on the ruins of an ancient troll metropolis. Using water from the Well of Eternity bottled by Illidan Stormrage, Dath'remar created a new source of magical power for the High Elves, which he named the Sunwell. Dath'Remar Sunstrider is the ancestor of Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider, and a large memorial tablet made in his honour exists on Sunstrider Isle.

A master swordsman as well as a brilliant engineer, he leads the Defias from the labyrinthine Deadmines in their infiltration throughout the last human kingdom, recruiting allies amongst other disenchanted humans, goblins, and even a local tauren. Eranikus

A dragon of great power. Eranikus is a member of Ysera's Green Dragonflight who live between the mortal plane and the Emerald Dream where they watch over nature and the natural progression of life. Eranikus was one of the dragons that confronted the Atal'ai trolls in the Swamp of Sorrows and attempted to halt the summoning of the Blood God, Hakkar. With the outbreak of the "Emerald Nightmare," Eranikus has fallen into the same madness that many others of the Green dragonflight now wrestle with.

The Shade of Eranikus, an ethereal projection of his actual self, is encountered as a boss in the Temple of Atal'Hakkar in World of Warcraft. The dragon, who you can briefly speak with through a quest, reveals his torment within the Emerald Dream. There is a substantial quest line involving Eranikus that has yet to be resolved. It is generally assumed that the true form of Eranikus will become a raid boss at some point and that his connection to Hakkar will reveal the source of the corruption in the Emerald Dream.

Recently during the World of Warcraft 1.9 Patch, a server-wide alert can ring out that stated: "Eranikus, Tyrant of the Dream, has entered our world!" It has been revealed that Eranikus has been corrupted by the forces behind the Emerald Nightmare and now seeks the death of Malfurion Stormrage. Eranikus is a part of the questline that need to be done to open the gates of Ahn'Qiraj. He can be summoned to Nighthaven in Moonglade by Keeper Remulos, the current head of the Cenarion Circle, after players return to him 4 fragments of the Nightmare recovered from the 4 Dream Portals dotted around Azeroth in Ashenvale, the Hinterlands, Duskwood, and Feralas. When summoned, Eranikus attempts to kill Remulos when he fails to produce Stormrage, but, assuming the player can stop him for long enough, Tyrande Whisperwind arrives in time to prevent him from doing so and calls for the power of Elune to cleanse him of his corruption. Upon doing so, another server-wide alert goes out, informing the world that Eranikus has been cleansed of his corruption due to the power of Elune.

Grand Marshal Garithos

Grand Marshal Garithos was a human Knight and a regional commander of the surviving Alliance forces in Lordaeron following its conquest by the Scourge. Racist and self-important perhaps to the point of delusion, he despised both elves and dwarves, constantly mistreated Prince Kael'thas and even sentenced him to death for consorting with the Naga. During the Undead Civil War, the Dreadlord Detheroc took control over him and his forces' minds, thus greatly boosting Detheroc's armies. However, Sylvanas and Detheroc's brother, Varimathras, slew Detheroc, thus ending the mental control over Garithos and his forces. He was then forced to join forces with the Forsaken against Balnazzar, the last of Varimathras' brothers in order to reclaim the Capital City. After the victory at Lordaeron's capital, Garithos foolishly ordered Sylvanas Windrunner to leave Lordaeron, treating her in a way similar to the way he had treated Kael. However, as Sylvanas had planned from the very beginning of their "alliance", she ordered Varimathras to kill Garithos. Varimathras carried out her orders, and Garithos' leaderless army was quickly scattered. His corpse was eaten by ghouls that had previously been his soldiers.

Garona
Main article: Garona (Warcraft)

Garona Halforcen was (as her name implies) a half-orc who served Gul'dan as an assassin for the Shadow Council. She first appears in Warcraft: Orcs & Humans during an orc campaign mission when the player has to rescue her from capture. She is further discussed in the book The Last Guardian, where it's revealed that she acted as a diplomat between the early Horde invaders and the humans through Medivh. Serving Medivh, she meets a young Khadgar, still apprenticed under Medivh at the time, who distrusts her because of her Orc heritage. Over time, the two begrudgingly accept one another and even begin to form trust, trying to discover the truth behind the odd happenings in Karazhan, Medivh's tower. When Medivh loses himself to the power of Sargeras, Garona has a premonition that she will be the one to kill King Llane, and removes herself from further aiding Khadgar. She carries out her destiny, and carves out King Llane's heart, under the orders of the Shadow Council. After the First Great War, when Blackhand is usurped by Orgrim Doomhammer, the new Warchief tortures Garona into revealing the location of the Shadow Council, which is quickly dispatched, now seating Doomhammer as true ruler of the Horde. Garona disappears and is presumed dead; However, in the beta of World of Warcraft, she could be found as an NPC in Ravenholdt Manor with the title "Grand Master of the Assassin's Guild", suggesting that she may have survived. She was quickly removed, but she may appear again in a later patch.

The tome Garona: A Study on Stealth and Treachery is still considered essential reading for up-and-coming rogues, but the last known copy has ironically been stolen from the Athenaeum, the great library of the Shen'dralar elves. Any knowledge of its whereabouts should be reported to Lorekeeper Kildrath in the elven halls below Dire Maul.

Using his warlock magics, he raised the Tomb of Sargeras from beneath its watery confines in hopes to seize the power of Sargeras himself by claiming the eye of Sargeras. His mission failed and he was killed alongside Cho'gall by the Demons defending Sargeras' tomb. In World of Warcraft The Burning Crusade it will be possible to encounter Gul'dan, or more accurately the spirit of Gul'dan in Shadowmoon Valley in Outland.

Hakkar the Soulflayer
Main article: Hakkar the Soulflayer

Originally summoned millennia ago to strengthen and protect the Troll tribes of Stranglethorn Vale (The Gurubashi Empire), Hakkar often demanded daily sacrifices and worse to appease him. Eventually, a few tribes realized Hakkar was using them to regain his full power in this world in order to conquer it all, and rebelled against him and his followers. In the bloody battle that ensued, Hakkar was banished and the Troll tribes splintered. Hakkar's followers were exiled from the tribes, but they did not stop in their quest to serve.

The exiles banded together to form a new tribe devoted to his service, they were known as the Hakkari, and they were determined to see Hakkar regain his full power. Eventually, Hakkar was again not pleased with simple blood sacrifices, and demanded to be summoned into the world. It was then when the Hakkari finally realised that Hakkar was evil. However, an fanatical faction of the Hakkari, known as the Atal'ai (his High Priests in fact), believed that Hakkar should be summoned.

The Hakkari called upon the most powerful and mysterious troll tribe, the Zandalar Tribe from the South Seas, and with them united to destroy the Atal'Ai. However, the remaining Atal'Ai trolls fled north into the Swamp of Sorrows errecting a temple to summon Hakkar, named the Temple of Atal'Hakkar. There, they once again attempted to summon the Blood God into Azeroth, but Ysera, ruler of the Green Dragonflight, felt Hakkar's unnatural spirit from the Emerald Dream and smashed the temple beneath the marshlands of the Swamp of Sorrows. She left loyal members of her Flight to guard the ruins, under the command of a Green Dragon, Eranikus. Now, the Hakkari are once again devoted to summon Hakkar after being subtly brainwashed by him and his High Priests from the Atal'ai. Hakkar the Soulflayer has now manifested himself in the Gurubashi ruins in northeastern Stranglethorn Vale known as Zul'Gurub. In response to this, the trolls of Stranglethorn sent their most powerful priests of the Five Aspects to vanquish him:
High Priestess Mar'li of the Spider God, Shadra.
High Priestess Jek'lik from the cult of Hir'reek the Bat God.
High Priest Venoxis of the Snake God.
High Priestess Ar'lokk, a devotee of Beth'ekk the Panther God.
High Priest Thek'al of Shirvallah the Tiger God.

In World of Warcraft he is the boss of two instances, the first is the Temple of Atal'Hakkar where the final boss is an ethereal shade of Hakkar, however this incarnation is a pale comparison to the actual Hakkar in terms of power, the actual Hakkar with his true power is a boss in the Zul'gurub raid instance.
This incarnation of Hakkar is unrelated to Hakkar the Houndmaster from Richard Knaak's War of the Ancients novel series.

[edit]
Hamuul Runetotem

An important Tauren figure, but with a minimal role in Warcraft history so far. He is the Elder Druid of Thunder Bluff. He greatly supports Cairne Bloodhoof, and has known him since childhood. Hamuul met and befriended Malfurion Stormrage, who taught him the ways of the Druid. Since then, Hamuul became an honorary member of the Cenarion Circle (which was previously predominantly Night Elf), and as a result, he is recognized as the first Tauren Druid in a span of twenty generations, and teaches Druidism to those willing to become Druids. As a result of his teachings, the druid is a playable class for Tauren and Night Elves alike in World of Warcraft.

[edit]
Helcular

A warlock who was attempting to transform himself into a lich. Unfortunately for him, his ritual in the Hillsbrad Foothills was discovered by a mob of humans, who killed him and buried him in the Southshore graveyard. The Forsaken at Tarren Mill became enraged by Helcular's death and are attempting to revive him. In World of Warcraft, players on the Horde side have a quest available to them which, if completed successfuly, results in Helcular returning to life. Originally, Helcular would often rampage through Southshore after being revived, but a later patch increased the levels of the town guards (for a reason unrelated to the quest), who now often make quick work of Helcular and, annoyingly, any Horde character that attempts to complete the quest owning to the proximity of the guards to the Graveyard. Many Horde players have died trying to get near the correct grave to complete the quest.

The champion of the Scarlet Crusade, he now resides inside the Armory of the Scarlet Monastery. Becoming something of a cult figure due to his stylistic design, zealous demeanour and popular catchphrase "Blades of Light!"

You may find him in the Armory of the Scarlet Monastery in World of Warcraft.

Highlord Kruul

Highlord Kruul first appeared on the video game World of Warcraft, on January 9th, after the patch. He is a commander of the Burning Legion, and he has found a way to come through the Dark Portal. He became a fightable monster in game, and he was almost an exact clone of Lord Kazzak. He even used "Mark of Kazzak" until they hotfixed it and it became "Mark of Kruul." He looks exactly like Lord Kazzak, whose model is a giant doomguard. The week before Burning Crusade came out, he would appear in random areas accompanied by level 50 Core Hounds, and boss level Infernals. He would leave a wake of destruction wherever he went. Some players had a fun time luring him into major cities. There were reports of Kruul ravaging cities for over 5 hours at a time.

High Tinker Mekkatorque

Gelbin Mekkatorque is the current High Tinker (a title nearly equivalent to King) of the Gnomish kingdom of Gnomeregan, and has been for the last seven years. Mekkatorque is hailed as one of the most skilled inventors ever, and as a just leader. Unfortunately, when the Troggs invaded Gnomeregan, the High Tinker was ill-prepared for the attack. Misled by his traitorous advisor, Mekkgineer Sicco Thermaplugg, Gelbin flooded the city with radiation, killing more Gnomes than Troggs. Today, he resides in the Tinker Town district of Ironforge, and fronts the attempt to reclaim his lost city, sending brave adventurers into Gnomeregan (abbreviated by players as "Gnomer") to fight off the Troggs in a hope to perhaps one day reclaim his great city of Gnomeregan.

Illidan Stormrage
Main article: Illidan Stormrage

Brother of Malfurion Stormrage; Illidan became a transformed Demon Hunter after consuming the powers of the skull of Gul'dan. Defeated by Arthas while attempting to kill the Lich King in Northrend; although assumed dead, he was not actually slain. Twisted by his lust for arcane magic, he now commands a great army of Naga, Blood Elves, and Draenei from his encampment in Outland. He has also closed off all the local portals in an effort to protect himself from both the armies of Azeroth and the wrath of the Burning Legion (the latter of which he incurred after swearing himself to Kil'jaeden the Deceiver and then failing him in the line of duty). In spite of his efforts, Illidan was nonetheless hunted down by Kil'jaeden, who ultimately chose to give him a chance to redeem himself by killing the Lich King.

During the time of the War of the Ancients, Illidan's lust for magical power and jealousy of his twin brother's lover caused him to betray his Night Elf allies and befriend the Burning Legion. After the Night Elf victory, he was sentenced to an imprisonment of 10,000 years, though he was later prematurely freed in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos by Tyrande Whisperwind.

In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Illidan is the final raid boss in Outland, residing in the Black Temple in the Shadowmoon Valley (possibly similar to Onyxia's Lair in terms of "simplicity"). A Blizzard staff member has stated that you "more get in his way than anything else."[citation needed]

After entering Azeroth, Kargath and his clan were stranded when the majority of the portals back to Draenor were destroyed. Since then, Kargath's activities are unknown.

He currently resides in the Naxxramas Necropolis above Stratholme where he conducts the Scourge throughout the Plaguelands. He is the final raid boss in Naxxramas Necropolis.

Archmage who became Medivh's apprentice, he discovered the taint of Sargeras in Medivh and killed him (banished his soul) to prevent further damage to others. Responsible for overseeing the Dark Portal that connected both the Human and Orc worlds, he tried to seal the portal.

In dwarven, his name means 'trust'. Was trapped on Draenor when it exploded and the Dark Portal was sealed. Was subsequently presumed dead by the Alliance. With the recent re-opening of the Dark Portal, it was discovered that Khadgar had survived the war and was alive and well. In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Khadgar lives in Shattrath City, assisting the Naaru in their war against the Burning Legion.

Kil'jaeden
Main article: Kil'jaeden

Known as the Deceiver, second in power only to Sargeras himself, he and Archimonde were singled out by Sargeras as his generals for his Burning Legion. Kil'Jaeden is the leader of the Nathrizim, also known as Dreadlords. It is Kil'Jaeden who creates the Lich King by forming a dark pact with the Orc Warlock Ner'zhul and it is Kil'Jaeden who later appoints Illidan Stormrage the task of destroying the Lich King. An immensly powerful Eredar Warlock, Kil'Jaeden is responsible for commanding the Burning Legion from the Twisting Nether. While Archimonde is the leader of the invasion of the Burning Legion, It is believed that Kil'Jaeden is in fact more powerful than Archimonde and is second in power only to Sargeras himself. He is currently the master of Illidan Stormrage and after his initial appearance at Outland to confront his wayward pawn, his whereabouts are unknown.

King of Lordaeron and father of Arthas Menethil. Forged the Alliance between the Human kingdoms, the High Elves of Quel'Thalas, and the Dwarves of Khaz Modan (it is disputed whether the gnomes of Gnomeregan were also part of this alliance, some argue that gnomes are visible in some of the previous warcraft titles, but the gnomes were apparently fighting a war for their capital against troggs for the span of Terenas's life). Refused the aid of Medivh shortly before the events of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Was murdered by his own son, Arthas, who joined the Scourge due to the corruption of Frostmourne.

Korialstrasz is a red Dragon. His other identity is Krasus, a powerful wizard of the Kirin Tor. As Krasus he appears very similar to, although not quite exactly, a night elf. He is the last consort of the Dragonqueen Alextrasza. He discovered that the man Lord Prestor who was going to be made King of Alterac during the second war, was actually Deathwing, leader of the Black Dragonflight, who was thought to be dead. He struggled to free his queen, Alexstrasza, from bondage from the Orcs. He succeeded with the help of Rhonin, Falstad, Vereesa, and ironically, Deathwing. Deathwing successfully got Rhonin into the Orc fortress so that Alexstrasza, Tyranastrasz, and the eggs were in the open. This allowed Korialstrasz to free Alexstrasza.

Magatha Grimtotem

Magatha Grimtotem is the leader of the mighty Grimtotem clan of the Tauren, and she is a powerful Shaman, being blessed with shamanic powers even as a girl. She is bestowed with the title of Elder Crone of the Grimtotem Clan, her position is equivalent to that of a clan chieftain, which is the fruition of a desire for power and prestige that was with her nearly her whole life. She came to power after she entered into an arranged marriage with the patriarch of the clan, which many can only suspect that she arranged herself, and lost her mate to an unforseen climbing accident. Her clan believes that she will be the one to lead them in eradicating Kalimdor of the lesser races, and in retaking the Tauren's ancestral holdings. She believes herself to be the only one fit to rule the Tauren, and constantly debates with Cairne Bloodhoof about the future direction of the Tauren.

The Grimtotems are all covered with black fur, and their clan can usually be seen as traitors to the Horde, attacking them on sight after having betrayed the Horde for their own interests, in the same manner as the Defias Brotherhood and the Burning Blade.

She is perhaps the most interesting player-assosciated political entity in World of Warcraft with the nature of her position. With the personality of an archetypical treacherous and manipulative villainess as the essence of her personality, she leaves a large potential open for a very interesting story in the future, though hers is already interesting enough. She made for the arrangements herself to come into a position of power, and the mysterious death of her equal, seeming to be an accident, and most likely a murder. And this hostile takeover without a coup, driven by the pursuit of power and prestige, can be found repeated countless times, in essence, in stories of all sorts, mainly in literature.

Magni Bronzebeard of Ironforge is the king of the Bronzebeard dwarves of Khaz Modan. After losing his realm to the Horde, he joined the Alliance, which helped him and his kind to reclaim their ancient lands. He remained steadfast to the Alliance after the Second War. He also sponsored the Explorer's Guild, created after the discovery of the dwarves ancient heritage, and established by his brother, Muradin Bronzebeard. After the death of his brother Muradin in Northrend due to Arthas's insanity, Magni has become overwrought with pain. He now rules over the city of Ironforge, and on most servers of World of Warcraft is the most difficult faction leader to kill. (Mainly due to the large amount of Alliance players in Ironforge as it has become something of a hang-out for Alliance players.)
