Watch Nokia borrow Apple's rhetoric for the N9 announcement: it feels "supernatural"




The Nokia N9 was announced in the early hours on June 21st, but in the couple of days after Espoo lifted the curtain over its first MeeGo device, it has only confused us as it seemed surprisingly good. Too good to be the first and last of the MeeGo mohicans. To help us get even further confused, Nokia posted the full video of the announcement where Nokia’s Marko Ahtisaari, SVP Design and User Experience, presents the enchanting device highlighting its functionality.

You already know most of the facts about the N9 – a 1GHz TI OMAP3630 CPU matched with the PowerVRSGX530 GPU, a 3.9-inch WVGA AMOLED screen. But it's not the hardware that matters with this device. Actually, designer Anton Fahlgren mentions: “What’s important for us is that if this becomes a hardware story, we’ve failed. It needs to be in context with the UI.”

And that's what the video below demonstrates. Smooth navigation and intuitive, swipe-dominated navigation on a beautifully colorful device. It almost feels like an Apple presentation – one focusing more on functions and innovation than on anything else. To cement that feeling Ahtisaari concluded the event: “So there it is, the Nokia N9. A design for a better way to use a phone. I urge you to try it here in Singapore and I trust that you see how natural, how even supernatural it feels.”

Nokia promises to continue support for N9, still not going to look back at MeeGo


Stephen Elop may have said that Nokia will not be looking back at MeeGo even if the N9 becomes a success but that does not mean Nokia will be abandoning it altogether after launch.



This assurance comes from Nokia’s Head of Portfolio Management, Klas Ström, who tweeted that Nokia will continue to support the N9 for years and release several software updates for it. We hope Nokia doesn’t plan on launching a buggy device to be actually needing those updates badly but it is nice to know in case it does have a problem you won’t be left out in the cold.

Still, it does only little to purge our disappointment of never seeing another MeeGo device from Nokia in our lives. But I guess it will have to do for now.

Well, the list of places that won't be seeing Nokia's N9 seems to be growing larger everyday. And, while it won't bring comfort to the poor souls in the US, UK or Germany, we can confirm that the fine citizens of Kazakhstan should be getting a heaping helping of MeeGo come September. A tipster sent us a flyer from Texhodom advertising the Finnish company's foray into Linux-powered smartphones as landing on September 9th for 99,990 Kazakh tenges, or about $679. The same tipster made us even more jealous when he sent in some photos of a giant billboard taunting the imminent arrival of the handset at the same electronics retailer. So, if you really have your heart set on an N9, and want one before those pasty folks in Switzerland and Sweden, looks like it's time to book your ticket to Almaty.

Nokia Link is the magic that connects your Nokia N9 to your computer
