There has been much speculation in the press that Renault has simply adopted the Volvo FH12 chassis and D12 headed drive train for the new Magnum. But TNN understands that the new Magnum will have a its own unique chassis, constructed from 7mm section aimed at addressing on-road performance, and handling, but at the same time reducing the overall vehicle weight compared with its predecessor.

Renault has not released specific details about power options, but it has told TNN that AB Volvo group engines will feature in the new truck, with injection systems and strategies optimised for the Renault Trucks product. It is still not clear if Renault will adopt the AB Volvo group's 16-litre engine for higher power and torque requirements or continue with its association with Mack.

Renault says that the new Magnum will be available with ZF manual gearboxes and an Optidriver II automated transmission, developed by the AB Volvo group.

Renault says that the braking and retardation set-up has been complemented by the very latest technologies to provide maximum safety to drivers and loads.

The manufacturer also says the existing cab design has been enhanced with new features to provide exceptional levels of comfort.

TNN has also learnt that the new Magnum will be one of the first tractor units to be offered with the option of Thermo King's new Mopacc, mobile power and automatic climate control system. Thermo King has been working closely with AB Volvo and the new Magnum's chassis and cab will be pre drilled to mount the Mopacc power unit and climate control system. As a result the vehicle batteries will be housed between the frames behind the fifth wheel.

The Mopacc system uses a diesel powered auxiliary power unit to power a cab mounted climate control system, provide power 230 volt ac utility power and secondary vehicle battery charging.

The system is aimed at long haul operation; where drivers are living on the truck for days on end and will eliminate the need to run the vehicle's main engine for long periods on idle to provide power for in cab systems and appliances. Thermo King says the system will add around 200kg to a truck's kerb weight and will cost in the region of 6,500 Euros, but it will save operators a fortune in fuel, reduce engine wear and will cut out the need for a night heater.

Thermo King says that it has also been working closely with Daf and Scania enabling them to offer the Mopacc system to their customers.
