Brodit SPV M3100/HTC TyTn car holder



Brodit manufacture high quality car holders for mobile devices ranging from mobile phones to MP3 players and satellite navigation units, of that there is no question. Their products all make use of a modular system which involves the customer purchasing a first bracket that fits to the owner's vehicle and a second bracket which attaches to the first and is designed to hold a specific mobile device. This system has the benefit of allowing a customer who has recently acquired a new mobile device to simply purchase the second bracket specific to their new device and another customer who has acquired a new vehicle to purchase only the first bracket that is designed specifically to fit their new car.


Choosing the right bracket

Having recently reviewed the Orange SPV M3100 I made contact with DSL Developments, a distributor of Brodit's products, and received a bracket to fit my new phone in the landscape, keyboard open position and a mounting bracket to fit my car, a late 2005 Hyundai Coupe.

The initial attraction to Brodit's car mount was that the system required no drilling of holes. A common feature of the vast majority of vehicle mounting brackets that Brodit manufacture is that they attach to your vehicle's dashboard by making use of the joins between sections of your dash. There were two choices for mounting in my car, a low fitting bracket that attached to the part of the centre console that houses the gear lever and handbrake and a higher fitting bracket that attached to the join between the centre console and the 3 dial gauge block that the Hyundai Coupe features. I opted for the latter of the two so as to make the positioning of my phone visible when being used for satellite navigation.
Fitting

The first time you fit a Brodit phone holder can be a little daunting, as is the case with most modern cars, the gaps between sections of my dashboard weren't big gaping holes, as such Brodit provide you with a 'Gap Opener' which is essentially a tapered piece of plastic used to enlarge a gap sufficiently to position the mounting bracket(s) in the correct position. The mounting bracket for a Hyundai Coupe is actually made up of two parts, one that fits between the 3 dial module (dials that display readings for torque, current MPG and voltage) and a second that fits to the left of the first where the brushed aluminium surround meets the black dash of the centre console.

Once these are in place the second bracket that actually holds the phone has to be attached to it, this involves a few small screws however none of these are destined for the dashboard, they are simply used to hold the two brackets together firmly which means there will be no permanent damage to your dash.



Using the product

The first time you slide you mobile device into a Brodit holder you'll realise why I like their products, each is designed specifically for the device you bought it for so the fitting is firm and your mobile device is reassuringly held in place. I opted for the holder that swivels allowing me to improve my viewing angle and also features a charger making use of my car's cigarette lighter socket. A neat touch worthy of mention is the small bracket that holds the mini USB charger when the holder/charger is not in use, this keeps the wires nicely tucked away as opposed to constantly hitting the dashboard when driving. Its touches like this that reassure the user that Brodit have really put some thought into the design of their products.

 

Conclusion

I like the Brodit mobile device holder system, the modular design, quality of manufacture and ease of use combine to produce a professional product that I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who is serious about purchasing a solution to mounting their mobile device(s) on their dashboard. The fact that the design is modular means that should you change vehicle or mobile device, you will only have to purchase one half of the system and attach it to the existing other half. I for one will be making use of my Brodit mobile phone car mount for the foreseeable future - great work Brodit!
