Joe breaks everything down to its simplest form - major, minor, or dominant. He covers everything very quickly and then goes to the examples, which he gives plenty of. However, if you're hoping for some chord melody tips or counterpoint examples you'll be disappointed with this video - it covers exactly what the title says: Jazz LINES. He does speak a little bit in the beginning about how he views chords but he doesn't go beyond that.

For anyone looking to learn about playing jazz lines, improvising, or about Joe's lead style in general, this is a fantastic buy. If you can't read music but are interested in Joe's style and can learn visually without too much grief, I would recommend the video, but the ability to read will certainly help you to get as much from the material presented as possible.

This DVD is a compilation of several VHS tapes which were made in the 1990s. The DVD is quite pricey and I, mistakenly, first bought "Highlights". I originally thought they were different items, the information on the DVD did not include a track list. This DVD "Blues Master" is the complete version and "Highlights" is the scaled down version of this set. However, I am more than happy with this product. B. B. 's performance is easily his best live work in the last 20 years and the sound is excellent. This is much better than say "By Request" or "Jazz Channel Presents". If you are a guitar player you will get hints from it, but its not a real instructional lesson ( I agree with the previous reviewer in that regard), it's more like an interview and overview of Mr King's career. If you want instruction, buy one of the many books available or the new Guitar Signature Licks DVD.

Charlie is generally recognized as the founding father of nylon string jazz guitar. He was one of the original Great Guitars that recorded on Concord (along with Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel) and is an "elder statesman" of the instrument. This video is full of Charlie doing what made him famous. Taking his time, he begins with a discussion of general classical-style technique, hammers and pulloffs, trills, and right hand fingerstyle warmups. The examples are liberally sprinkled with lovely chordal passages and licks.
Other subjects that Charlie covers include blues playing, chromatic substitutions in turnarounds, artificial harmonics and a special section on Bossa Nova rhythms. He plays all the examples with impeccable classical technique and a gentle, engaging swing feel.

I would have preferred more playing than talking, but others may find his detailed verbal explanations useful. I think this video is especially valuable for classical players interested in learning to play jazz but don't want to buy an electric guitar. You can do it on a classical guitar and Charlie shows you how. It's also useful for regular jazz players who want a good introduction to fingerstyle guitar. Charlie's right hand fingerstrokes exemplify proper technique, making this video a valuable learning tool.

The compositional and emotive elements of his playing are of far more use than the picking exercises but anyone who has a knowledge of his musical output will realise that he covers both approaches very successfully. Many guitarists of this period were quite idiosyncrcatic in their approach to the guitar and as such I think that anyone with an interest in melodic playing, or indeed a penchant for the 1980′s will benefit from this video

This DVD is a compilation of several VHS tapes which were made in the 1990s. The DVD is quite pricey and I, mistakenly, first bought "Highlights". I originally thought they were different items, the information on the DVD did not include a track list. This DVD "Blues Master" is the complete version and "Highlights" is the scaled down version of this set. However, I am more than happy with this product. B.B.'s performance is easily his best live work in the last 20 years and the sound is excellent. This is much better than say "By Request" or "Jazz Channel Presents". If you are a guitar player you will get hints from it, but its not a real instructional lesson ( I agree with the previous reviewer in that regard), it's more like an interview and overview of Mr King's career. If you want instruction, buy one of the many books available or the new Guitar Signature Licks DVD.
