Hidetaka Nishiyama[b][/b]

Hidetaka Nishiyama (October 10, 1928 ~ November 7, 2008) was a Japanese-American martial arts master, instructor, author, administrator and pioneer. A student of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shōtōkan-ryū, Nishiyama is considered one of the great masters of the style.

Education and initial martial arts training

Born in Tokyo, Japan Nishiyama started kendo training in 1933, followed by judo training in 1938. In 1943, he began training in Shotokan karate at the Hombu Dojo under its founder, Funakoshi Gichin. By 1946 he had his black belt in karate and by 1948, he would have his second dan.[1]

Two years later, while enrolled at Takushoku University, he became a member of the university's karate team, and in 1949 he was named captain. He was a co-founder of the All Japan Collegiate Karate Federation and was elected its first chairman.[2]

Nishiyama received a Master of Arts degree in economics from Takushoku University in 1951.[2] That same year, he was a co-founder of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) and was elected to the JKA board of Directors.[3]

[edit] Training in America

In 1952, he began training American military from the Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Shotokan karate.[1] The following year Curtis Lemay invited him to tour American air bases on the American mainland. The other karate instructors for this program included Masatoshi Nakayama, and Isao Obata.[2]

In 1960 he published his first book: Karate: The Art of Empty-Hand Fighting which he co-wrote with Richard C. Brown. Today it is still considered a definitive text book on the subject. In its 70th printing, (2,000 copies per printing) it is considered the best selling karate text book in history.[3]

[edit] Life in America

In July 1961, SAC karate students and JKA members residing in the United States invited Nishiyama to move to America. Later that year, he organized the All American Karate Federation (AAKF) as a nationally based amateur karate organization.[3] In November of the same year, Nishiyama organized under the control of the AAKF the first National Karate Championship in Los Angeles, California where he also established his dojo. Since then, Nishiyama was a major force in the propagation of the Shotokan style of karate in the U.S. and abroad.

In 1965, Nishiyama organized a committee with the cooperation of the major Japanese karate styles that led to the first United States vs. Japan Goodwill Karate Tournament. Because of the participation of the All Japan Collegiate Karate Team, this event became the first truly international karate competition.

[edit] Role in international karate

In 1968, Nishiyama organized the first World Invitational Karate Tournament held at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in conjunction with the Olympic Commemorative Tournament hosted by the Mexico Karate Federation in Mexico City. A conference which took place during the tournament culminated in an agreement to form an international karate organization and to hold its first World Championship in Tokyo.[2] In 1970, during a reorganization of the AAKF as the traditional karate governing body, the JKA Karate group separated and became the JKA-US, part of the AAKF.[citation needed]

Nishiyama continued as Chairman of the JKA-US and also as Chairman of the AAKF. In April of that same year, the AAKF became a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

In 1973, Nishiyama co-founded the Pan American Karate Union (PAKU) and was elected its First Executive Director. The first PAKU Championship was staged in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.[3]

Based on a 1968 agreement formed at a Mexico City conference, tournaments were held in Tokyo (1970) and Paris, France (1973). These World Championships resulted in disagreements caused by the lack of formal international organization. An international meeting later followed in New York City resulting in the formation of the International Amateur Karate Federation (IAKF) with Nishiyama elected as its Executive Director.

The first IAKF World Championship was held in Los Angeles in 1975. He oversaw the formation of the Mediterranean Karate Championship Committee and Bolivian Karate Federation in 1976. Also that year, acting on behalf of the IAKF, he submitted an application to the International Olympic Committee seeking Olympic recognition for Karate.

Nishiyama then supported the formation in 1977 of the Central America/Caribbean Karate Confederation and the Asia/Oceania Amateur Karate Federation. In 1979, in accordance with U.S. public law regulating national amateur sports governing bodies, the All American Karate Federation was succeeded by the American Amateur Karate Federation, a public benefit, non-profit corporation. Nishiyama was elected its first President.

In 1981, he also lent support to the formation of the South American Karate Confederation and the North American Karate Confederation. In 1985, the IAKF changed its name to the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF) because the word "karate" had become a generic term applied to a variety of kicking/punching sports. The ITKF, under Nishiyama's direction, wanted to make clear it was the governing body of traditional karate. In 1987, the IOC officially confirmed that the ITKF was the governing body for traditional karate.

[edit] Reputation and international recognition

Nishiyama's reputation has spread foremost because of his superior technical expertise and his disciplined instruction. He is noted among martial artists for his interest in the similarities between the very different martial arts styles of Tai Chi and Shotokan Karate.

Among his former students are All Japan Karate Champions Hiroshi Shirai and Takeshi Oishi. In addition, he trained a host of international and national instructors, national champions and celebrities.

Before his death in 2008, Nishiyama taught at the Central Dojo in Los Angeles, and often taught seminars and courses around the U.S. and abroad. He also produced new texts and manuals, as well as instruction video recordings concerning traditional karate.

In honor of his 71st birthday, Nishiyama was presented with an American flag which had been flown on October 10, 1999 over the Capitol in Washington, D.C.. The special flag was given to him in recognition of his decades of effort on behalf of Traditional Karate. This flag was intended to acknowledge his contribution towards the physical and psychological health of Americans through martial arts. [4]

In May 2000, Nishiyama was further honored when the Nishiyama Cup was held in Moscow, the first official Karate event conducted in Russia since the end of the Soviet Union.[3]

On November 1, 2003, he was awarded his Judan, or tenth degree black belt, the highest rank available in Shotokan karate.[5]

Nishiyama sensei died on November 7th, 2008 in Los Angeles.

Smile

Smile

Kanbun Uechi Smile

Kanbun Uechi, in whose honor the Karate system presented in this book is named, studied in China at the Central Temple in the (Fukien) Province during the years of 1897-1910. The Chinese name for the system he studied is Pangai-Noon (Pwang-gay-noon.) When Kanbun died in 1948, his students renamed the style Uechi-ryu (ryu is the Japanese word for style). Kanbun studied under the tutelage of Chou-tzu-ho, whose reputation even today is known in Taiwan by the old masters, and is regarded by them to be a very famous teacher.

Kanbun's reason for leaving Okinawa were twofold. Probably the main reason was to learn the superior art of Chinese fighting (sometimes called Kenpo). During the l8th and l9th centuries, most of the great Okinawan teachers went to China to study.

Since 1879, under Japan's rule, Okinawan youths were forced to serve in the Japanese army. The older generation, which included Kanbun's parents, fearful of inviting invasion from Japan's enemies should an armed force be maintained on Okinawa, strongly opposed this military conscription. Women prayed daily at the Shinto shrine and Buddhist temples that their husbands and sons would be unfit for military service. Encouraged by his parents Kanbun quietly left the island of Okinawa, bound for unknown adventures in China, early in 1897.

Although little is known of Kanbun's 13 years in China, he did occasionally tell his students stories relating to his travels and study of Karate. His son Kanei did say that Kanbun directed all his energies toward the mastery of Karate. He learned not only the physical art, which included Chinese medicine, but also the underlying philosophy of the art which made such a lasting impression on him.

After ten years of study, Kanbun obtained permission to open his own school. With great initial difficulty, Kanbun Set up a school in the province of Nansoue. Mr. Gokenkein, a Chinese tea merchant and student of Kingai, (A form of Karate similar to Okinawan Goju-ryu) warned Kanbun not to open a school in the district as others had tried and failed. Kanbun replied that he liked the area and wished to test his Karate ability by teaching there. In time, despite a few run-ins, his reputation grew until he finally had a successful school with many students, including Mr. Gokenkein, the very man who had warned him not to open there. Kanbun Uechi had the distinction of being the only Okinawan to have actually taught in China and to be accepted as a teacher.

Kanbun was quite happy in this village and was doing well as a teacher when unfortunately one of his students, who by nature was quiet and unassuming, was provoked into an argument over a boundary dispute. His opponent viciouslyattacked the student who instinctively defended himself and accidentally struck his attacker with a fatal blow. The village people blamed this death on Kanbun, since he had instructed this student, and the respect of the village turned to distrust and hatred. Kanbun had been teaching in China for about three years, when he left for Okinawa, vowing never to teach Karate again or ever speak about it.

There are many versions to the story of how Kanbun Uechi began his teaching career once again; most are partially true. The following story was told by Kanei Uechi (Kanbun's son) and confirmed by Kanbun's first student, Ryuyu Tomoyose:

Kanbun Uechi returned to Okinawa in 1910, married, and began farming in the northern part of the island near Naha. Life was uneventful for Kanbun during these years. Then, about two years after Kanbun's return to Okinawa, Mr. Gokenkein, the Chinese tea merchant and former student of Kanbun, visited Okinawa on business. Mr. Gokenkein urged Kanbun to resume teaching but with no success. Gokenkein became involved in a fight with a Naha Karate teacher. When Gokenkein defeated the teacher, many other teachers challenged him, but none were able to defeat Gokenkein. Then many young men visited him. asking that he instruct them in his style of Karate. Gokenkein would tell them that there lived in Okinawa a truly great Karate expert who had been his teacher in China. Soon Kanbun's reputation grew and spread, even though no one had ever seen him perform. Many young men visited Kanbun, asking that he teach, but he would reply that they must have mistaken him for someone else. Finally, the townspeople confronted Kanbun with Gokenkein. After that, he was unable to deny the stories but still refused to discuss Karate or demonstrate a Kata.

Kanbun and Kanei Uechi (1941)

Every year the Motobu police department had a large celebration and all the Karate schools demonstrated their skills. The other teachers who were anxious to see proof of Kanbun's ability, asked the mayor of Motobu to request that he demonstrate at the celebration. They would see that Kanbun attended and was seated so near the stage that if he refused the Mayor's request he would lose face. The plot worked, for when the mayor asked Kanbun to demonstrate, the other teachers who were standing dose by, playfully pushed Kanbun onto the stage. Eyes glaring, Kanbun performed the Kata Seisan very fast and beautifully, with such strength and power that after he had finished, jumped down from the stage and proceeded home, the Karate part of the program had ended, for no one else wished to follow Kanbun's demonstration.

From that time on, he was respected throughout Okinawa as a truly great expert. Itosu Anko, a great Karate expert from the Shorin system and a Karate professor at the teacher's college in Okinawa, asked Kanbun to accept a position. There was so much pressure from different sources that Kanbun Uechi finally left Okinawa for Japan in 1924.

While in Japan, Kanbun lived in a housing compound in Wakiyama prefecture near Osaka. There he met an alert and aggressive young Okinawan, a neighbour by the name of Ryuyu Tomoyose. Purely by accident, Ryuyu suspected that Kanbun knew Karate. One evening he fabricated a story about being in a fight, described a fictitious attack, then said that he did not know what he should have done. After hearing this, Kanbun became very excited and explained to Ryuyu what he should have done. Each night for a week Ryuyu to Kanbun with a different attacking situation and each night Kanbun would explain in detail what should have been done. After realizing that he could not continue this ruse for very long, Ryuyu confronted Kanbun with the fact that he knew of Kanbun's ability and implored that Kanbun give him lessons. Kanbun refused at first, but finally agreed because of their friendship on the condition that Ryuyu never teil anyone else.

Two years later, Ryuyu asked Kanbun to teach the public, saying that if he did not teach, the art would die out and something so good should be given to other people. Finally Kanbun consented. Ryuyu recruited many students, mostly Okinawans like himseif. Kanbun continued to teach in Wakiyama prefecture until 1947.

Kanei Uechi (1910-1991)

Kanei Uechi began his study of Karate in 1930 under his father's guidance in Japan, and studied for 10 years, then opened his own school in Osaka for two years. He then returned to Okinawa, married, and settled down as a farmer for a short time in Nago. Ryuko Tomoyose, son of Ryuyu, was living in Futenma, Okinawa when he learned from his father that Kanei was in Okinawa. Ryuko found Kanei and convinced him to teach. Ryuko and a group of Karate students then built a dojo for Kanei and brought him to Futenma to teach. This was the first time Okinawa actually had a teacher of Pangainoon. Kanei has been actively teaching Karate at the same site ever since. Visitors to this Island cannot miss seeing his new dojo situated on top of the highest hill in Futenma. William Cheung

Cheung Cheuk Hing in pinyin) (born 1940) is a Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioner and currently the Grandmaster of his lineage of Wing Chun, entitled Traditional Wing Chun (TWC). He also heads the sanctioning body of TWC, the World Wing Chun Kung Fu Association.

In 1951, at the age of ten, Cheung started his training in Wing Chun Kung Fu under the late Yip Man. According to Cheung, it was from 1954 to 1958 that he was a live-in student of Yip Man and inherited the complete system of Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu.

Martial Arts

Duncan Leung, a Yip Man student, says it was William Cheung who first made Wing Chun famous in Australia. "In 1957 another early student of Yip Man, William Cheung, immigrated to Australia. On the way there an incident occurred when he locked himself in the sailor cabin and fought more than 10 sailors. This got into all the newspapers and so Wing Chun was even known in Australia then." [1]

Cheung is also known for demonstrating "Egg Standing" to demonstrate his skill in weight distribution and overall control of his body

Teaching Accomplishments

After moving to Melbourne, Australia to teach Wing Chun professionally in 1973, Cheung began operating a martial arts school. In 1976 he was elected the President of the Australian Kung Fu Federation.

Writings

Books by Cheung include: "Wing Chun Bil Jee", "Wing Chun Butterfly Swords", "Wing Chun Dragon Pole", "Advanced Wing Chun", "How to Develop Chi Power", "Wing Chun Kung Fu" (in French), "A Comparison of Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do" Volumes I and II (with Ted Wong). He has also produced a number of videos, including "The Wing Chun Way", "Tao of Wing Chun" and "PRO-TEKT: A Personal Protection Program".

"Traditional" Wing Chun

As an official successor to Yip Man was not named publicly, some Wing Chun exponents have been involved in the politics of claiming to be the rightful successor. Cheung claims to be the only one taught what he calls the "Traditional Wing Chun" style, which he says was previously a secret, purer version of wing chun only taught to those expected to become the style's standard bearers. Cheung claims that all the rest of Yip Man's students were taught what he calls the "Modified Wing Chun" system, alleged to be a simpler and less effective style taught to outsiders. All of the other senior students of Yip Man, including the directors of the Ving Tsun Athletic Association (VTAA) and Yip Man's two sons, have disputed Cheung’s claims.

Challenge

In the 1980s, Cheung made these claims in a series of martial arts magazines, starting a published war of words with other students of Yip Man and fellow board members of the VTAA. He offered to demonstrate the practical (combat) superiority of his system against anybody who wished to try, and he was subsequently challenged to a fight unexpectedly in the midst of a seminar in Germany by a WingTsun fighter named Emin Boztepe.[3] Cheung tried to persuade Boztepe to wait until after the seminar, but Boztepe insisted on fighting immediately. The ensuing confrontation was captured on video; however, the footage of video tape starts suddenly at the middle of the fight, with no beginning, at a point of physical engagement and does not reveal any such provocation, and also varies brightness and contrast in certain stages. Cheung contends that these are all consistent with editing of the footage. The outcome of this was both Cheung and Emin emerged unscathed and unharmed, and Boztepe's appearance at a seminar to initiate a "fight" has been viewed as an embarrassment to the Wing Chun community. The incident has turned into something of an Internet phenomenon.

Start Date

His claimed start date of 1951 with Yip Man [4]is also controversial, as he has also stated that he started after fellow Yip Man student Wong Shun Leung[5]. Wong said his own start date with Yip Man was early 1954, making the 1951 date impossible. In the article Wong wrote, entitled "Wong shun leung and his friendship with Bruce Lee", he further suggested that Cheung (Chang in Mandarin) began after him, but not long before Bruce Lee:

"At first, when Bruce learnt the fundamental boxing form of Wing Chun Kung Fu, he seemed to have a sense of suspicion towards it. It was true that the boxing form was a bit dry, so he did not seem to have much interest in it. However, he had seen how Chang, a youngster of the same age, won over his opponent. He also knew that his history of learning Wing Chun Hung Fu was not long.

Live-in status

Cheung also claims to have been a live-in student of Yip Man between 1954-1958, overlapping the 1951-1955 time period when his senior Chu Shong Tin, also claims to have lived with Yip Man. [7] Chu has never corroborated the claim, and has only suggested the opposite in the 1986 VTAA letter regarding Cheung, where he described Cheung's training as intermittent.

Smile

(Mixed martial arts).

Yip Man

The late Grandmaster Yip Man, was without a doubt responsible for the art of Wing Chun Kuen coming into the modern public eye. He also was in a direct line of Wing Chun practitioners dating back nearly 200 years to the art's fabled beginnings at the original Shaolin Temple in Honan Province. Prior to publicly teaching in Hong Kong, Wing Chun Kuen was famous from previous masters such as Leung Jan, but it was a mystery to most people in terms of it's actual form and content, as it was taught to very few. That changed once Yip Man began teaching in Hong Kong until his death. From his students spring the largest amount of Wing Chun practitioners in the modern world. Nowadays, there may be many variations from his original teachings, but he was the undisputed Grandmaster of his time.

As the rightful patriarch of the Wing Chun style of kung fu, he succeeded in spreading his obscure but dynamic fighting art first throughout the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong and then throughout the world. He had developed a reputation as a superlative fighter. He had stood up to hard stylists and soft stylists, to instructors and students, and even to a foreign devil or two. Yet despite his small five foot, 120 pound frame, never once had he lost. Today, 90 percent of Wing Chun schools in the world can be traced directly to his efforts.

His teaching has become a cornerstone of the modern martial arts era. The bare-boned efficiency of his fighting techniques, coupled with the knowledge that he was Bruce Lee's instructor, caused millions to regard his art with awed curiosity, Wing Chun means magic to them. Throughout the world, wherever instruction is not readily available, martial artists have at least attempted to imitate the subtleties of the art's sticking and trapping techniques.

Today Wing Chun is the most influential martial art to emerge from 20th century China.

Choi Hong H i- also known as General Choi  Smile  ( 9 November 1918–15 June 2002)

was a South Korean army general and martial artist who is a controversial figure in the history of the Korean martial art of taekwondo.[1] Choi is widely regarded as the 'Founder of Taekwondo'—most often by International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) organizations.[1][2][3][4] Others, such as World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) organizations, portray Choi as either an unimportant or dishonorable figure in taekwondo history, whether by omitting him from their versions of taekwondo history[5] or through explicit statements.[6]

Early life

Choi was born on 9 November 1918 in Hwa Dae, Myŏngch'ŏn county, in what is now the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.[7] Choi's father sent him to study calligraphy under Han Il Dong, who was also "a master of Taek Kyon, the ancient Korean art of foot fighting" (Park, 1993, p. 241).[7] In 1937, Choi travelled to Japan for further study.[7][8] In Kyoto, he met a fellow Korean with the surname Kim, who was a karate instructor and taught Choi this martial art.[7] Just before he had left Korea, Choi had apparently had a disagreement with a wrestler named Hu, and the possibility of a future confrontation inspired him to train hard; in his own words, "I would imagine that these were the techniques I would use to defend myself against the wrestler, Mr. Hu, if he did attempt to carry out his promise to tear me limb from limb when I eventually returned to Korea" (Park, 1993, p. 242). Choi attained the rank of 1st dan in karate in 1939, and then 2nd dan soon after.

Military career

Choi had been forced to serve in the Japanese army during World War II, but was implicated in a rebellion and imprisoned, during which time he continued practicing martial arts.[7] Following the war, in January 1946, Choi was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Korean army.[7] From 1946 to 1951, Choi received promotions to first lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, and then brigadier general.[7] Choi was promoted to major general in 1954.

Taekwondo

Choi stated he combined elements of taekkyeon and karate to develop a martial art that he called "Taekwon-Do" (태권도; 跆拳道), which literally means "to kick, to punch, the art", and it was so named on 11 April 1955.[7][9] Choi founded the Oh Do Kwan, and held an honorary 4th dan ranking in the Chung Do Kwan, of which he was later stripped.[6] ITF taekwondo organizations credit Choi with starting the spread of taekwondo internationally by stationing Korean taekwondo instructors around the world,[7] and have consistently claimed that ITF-style taekwondo is the only authentic style of taekwondo, most notably in early sections of its textbooks.[10] He is also the author of the first English Taekwondo syllabus book, entitled "Taekwon-Do" published by Daeha Publication Company in 1965.

In 1971, the South Korean government refused Choi permission to teach taekwondo in North Korea; as a result, Choi went into exile in Canada and the South Korean government formed the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

Death

General Choi died on 15 June 2002 in Pyongyang, North Korea.[8] Choi is listed in the Taekwondo Hall of Fame with various titles: "Founder and First President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation," and "Founder of Oh Do Kwan.
