Emmet Gowin (1941-) became known for a series of carefully made large-format pictures of his own family and his wife's relations. Intimately and lovingly seen, they also reflect a spontaneity and a lack of inhibition.
A number of the early images showed a circular vignetting on the large-format picutre, occasioned by the use of a lens without sufficient covering power. Although apparently not intentional, it gave the pictures an interesting quality, referring both to the view through a telescope and also to the vignetting of many Victorian family pictures.
He then moved on to landscape, and further to aerial photography.
