Synopsis
Set towards the end of World War II, Nomura (Masatoshi Nagase) is a writer who is in despair. A woman works in bar and is a former prostitute. Many years ago, her father sold her to a brothel due to the family’s severe financial hardships. The writer and the woman then agree to live as husband and wife until the war ends. The woman doesn’t feel sexual pleasures due to her past, while the man lusts for the woman’s body. Meanwhile, Ohira (Jun Murakami) fought for Japan in China. He participated in unconscionable acts against civilians in the name of war. He returns to Japan with only one arm. Ohira then begins to prey on innocent women. ~ asianwiki
Koji Wakamatsu acolytes, Junichi Inoue and Haruhiko Arai, respectively director and screenwriter of Senso to Hitori no Onna, show how far the apples have fallen from the tree of the pinku political pioneer. Set at the end of World War II, the film follows two stories, one of world-weary lovers – dissipated writer Nomura (Masatoshi Nagase) and bartender/prostitute (Noriko Eguchi) – who shack up together and decide to fuck until the war ends and another of a shell-shocked war veteran, Ohira (Jun Murakami), who becomes a serial rapist. The twin stories, ripped from the headlines, ultimately intersect in an unholy and clichéd union. Not a moment of screen time is wasted in portraying tired stereotypes and situations, ultimately telegraphing the fateful meeting of Noriko and Ohiru (note: she likes her sex rough and thus gets off on being raped). Worse, she comes to an emotional catharsis in a fit of vomiting. The casual sexism that pervades much of contemporary Japanese filmmaking gets fully exercised in this execrable piece of crap masquerading as edgy cinema. ~ Originally published in EL Magazine, May 2013
Notes
A Woman and War is a 2013 Japanese movie directed by Junichi Inoue and based on a novella by Ango Sakaguchi. The character of Ohira is based on Yoshio Kodaira, a convicted rapist and serial killer. It premiered at the Osaka Asian Film Festival on March 10, 2013.

Kim is having a midlife crisis with no satisfaction in work and no respect from his wife, Young-hee. He finds a human cloning service online accidentally, claiming to take care of one’s unwanted business, Kim thinks it would be fun. He meets with the representative from the cloning company but thinks it is just a scam; at night, he walks into the house hearing the moaning of his wife and finds out she is in bed with his clone, enjoying his service. She confesses she loves him, which strikes Kim that he has never made Young-hee this happy for a long time. Kim makes up his mind and focus on his career, yet the next day, he finds that his clone is doing his job and has received compliments from his boss. He knows he cannot be compared to his clone, so he decides to say a final goodbye to Young-hee. When he hugs her in his arms, she loses consciousness……
A Woman in the Wall
Yoon Tae-sung is an up-and-coming architect who works very hard to design his dream house; but he cannot afford to move in afterwards. One night, while drafting in his tiny apartment, he hears the sound of beating and a woman’s moaning. From that night onwards, he hears the same noises at the same hour, which distracts him from working. He bumps into one of the occupants of his floor the next day. Seeing the bruises on her wrist, he confirms that it was her who has been making the noises at night. During the day, he stalks her and sees how her husband yell at her at work, while at night, he listens to the noises closely. He sympathizes with her and confesses to her about his love eventually, urging her to leave her husband by calling the police. The police comes and takes him away instead. Everything turns out to be his mere imagination, it is only a boxer watching porn while practicing next door. Yet, he can now only fall in love with the imaginary woman in the wall.

Synopsis:
A filmmaker (van den Driessche) holds a series of boundary-pushing auditions for his project about female pleasure. During screen tests for a brief nude scene with an actress, he discovers the pleasure some women can have in the transgression of minor erotic taboos. Driven by the desire to contribute something new to the cinema, he decides to make a film that mixes fiction and reality and centers on something which unexpectedly becomes an enigma and a taboo: the minor transgressions that are a source of pleasure.
