HTC Updates Desire Z Gingerbread Status: Out By End of June

 Yesterday we learned about HTC finally getting a Gingerbread update going for both the Desire HD and the Incredible S. The Desire HD release is part of a move by HTC to get Android 2.3 on all the Desire-series Androids, as it claimed it would be working on in the first half of this year. While the HD is now taken care of, Desire Z owners are still waiting for a little Gingerbread of their own. We've heard estimations from HTC on when to expect the release ranging from spring to summer. In its most recent update, HTC has said that Gingerbread for the Desire Z will arrive before the end of June.

HTC explains the wait with the usual language of product testing and commitment to excellence, discussing in particular the the difference in display resolution between the Desire Z and Desire HD as a reason why their Gingerbread releases aren't simultaneous.

This news from HTC is reassuring that the Desire Z's release is still on track, but it strays ever so slightly from earlier estimations of the update's release, perhaps hinting that HTC is less confident with how soon work will be completed, and that we might not see the release until the tail end of June.

Some people don't like the way the keyboard on the T-Mobile G2 and HTC Desire Z lifts up and back (rather than sliding). They've voiced concerns over what they call the "fragility" of the hinges, and the ease in which the keyboard can unintentionally open or close while beings used in various positions. I don't share these concerns, and haven't had any problems with my keyboard opening or closing when I didn't want it to -- unless I was using it upside down.

Be that as it may, one particularly adventurous tinkerer has found a way to adjust the mechanism to keep the phone closed a little more tightly than the stock configuration.

"I can have the KB open, G2 upside down and shake it fairly vigorously before it will begin to close now! Definite improvement!"

Unfortunately, his "fix" isn't for the feint of heart, clumsy, or those who aren't willing to void their warranty. Additionally, you'll need a T5 screwdriver and a "puny" Phillips screwdriver.





You only need to follow the tear-down instructions as far as the PCB removal. At that step you'll have access to the spring mechanism in the hinge. Once there you should be able to take out the spring and "stretch it a little". Put it back in, and reassemble everything. A commenter to the thread at XDA-Developers says to "BE SUPER DUPER careful with PLUGGING IN the micro-SD ribbon cable when you reassemble". Apparently he broke one of the spring tension pins on the microsd slot at that step.

Hvala svima na strpljenju u vezi Gignerbread update-a za Desire Z. U poslednjoj smo fazi testiranja i plan nam je da se update pojavi u toku nekoliko sledećih nedelja. Možda će trebati malo vremena da update dođe do svih vas u svakoj mreži, ali trebalo bi da bude dostupan svim korisnicima do kraja meseca.

Amidst all the excitement surrounding the original HTC Desire getting the Android Gingerbread update, the Desire Z owners are probably feeling left out. But you have no reason to feel that way anymore as HTC has started rolling out the Gingerbread update to Desire Z handsets across the world.



This information was provided by HTC a few days back stating that the update will start rolling out in a few weeks but is now being confirmed by carriers that it has already started rolling out in certain countries, such as Vodafone Australia. The software number for this update is 2.42.861.6 and will update the Android version to 2.3.3 with Sense UI 2.1.

The update is rolling out gradually so you may not see anything now but you will soon be getting a notification on your phone asking you to download the 104MB update, so make sure you are latched onto a fast data connection. And do let us know what all improvements you find in the new update once you receive it.

-kad je oficijalni rom u pitanju, zakleo bi se da je telefon bolje radio sa 2.2 . Sada ,na 2.3.3. bagova kolio hoces, a ispravke ne stižu...

Telefon je odlican. Mislim da je ovo najbolji telefon koji sam ikada ima i da mi skoro nece biti potreban ni jedan drugi. Jeste da je dosta tezak ali mi nekako to odgovara. U principu, sada svi telefoni postaju isti, jedino je pitanje koji ce imati koliko bagova. Ovaj mi se svidja zbog velicine ekrana koji nije mali a nije ni preveliki tako da moze da prodje kao obican telefon.

Moze li neko da mi kaze koja je prednost rootovanog telefona? Znam da onda moze da se overklokuje (ali da li telefon stvarno moze da izdrzi da radi na vecoj brzini ili ne?)

-kada uradiš root na fonu, možeš ulaziti u sistemske fajlove, brisati fabrički instalirane app koje ti ne trebaju,menjati rom-ove po želji,"kloknuti" ga, napraviti ciglu od njega, jednostavno softverski raditi sa telefonom šta ti je volja i oblikovati ga prema svojim potrebama. Sve se to sa debelom pažnjom radi,jer kako rekoh,ako nisi dovoljno upućen,postoji šansa da se telefon trajno ošteti.
   Što se overclock-a tiče, sa xda sajta sam saznao, da se može podići na 1.4ghz da ne smetano radi, bez bojazni da nešto rikne. Neki su ga podizali do čak 2ghz. Ako ne spadaš u Geek-ove, mislim da ti clock-ovanje nije ni potrebno. Za svakidašnju upotrebu standardnih app i usluga, mislim da nema potrebe i da je brzina zadovoljavajuća.
