Dell Streak's Gorilla Glass screen: torture tested for your amusement (video)

So we've been hearing rumors about the Dell Streak being some kind of a rugged bad boy. Word is, the Gorilla Glass display on this 5-inch slate is good enough to withstand pretty much anything a human would care to throw its way. Them's fighting words where we come from, so we did the only thing a responsible tech blog can do -- we put them to the test. Should you be brave enough to follow us after the break, you'll come upon our best efforts to destroy our own Streak prototype, albeit with little success. Then again, the end result might be less important than the journey there, which is not to be missed.

Android will move to a yearly update cycle

In a recent interview with Mercury News, Google’s VP of Engineering for Android, Andy Rubin, acknowledged that the current pace of Android OS development is not sustainable long term and that they will scale back to a yearly update when “things start settling down.”

Rubin explains in the interview that the speed of updates to date has been due to their need to bring the “product up to market spec.”

OEMs and developers will likely be the most gladdened by this news, but users will hopefully realize that long term this is necessary for the well-being of the platform. Talk of fragmentation constantly dogs Android and it will not stop until there are at most two versions of the OS, whereas the release of Froyo has us sitting again at four.

I suspect we all loved watching Google I/O and hearing of the innovation coming in Froyo and beyond — but each time there is a new OS release the joy is always tempered by the question of when current Android device owners are going to actually see these updates.

Some lag is inevitable in an update process that involves so many players, but it would be more tolerable if you didn’t have to see three more versions of the OS ship before you finally managed to get your update, just in time to be once again passed up by the newest version of the OS.

App developers are also likely as weary of hearing about their apps only supporting the most recent versions of the OS as users are of finding that the latest and greatest app they heard about doesn’t support their version of the OS. This should be a win for both sides of that equation.

Do you agree that this is a necessary move for Android and if you think that a year is too long to wait between updates what do you think the ideal update timeline would be?

So we launched it, and from our internal 0.8, we got to 1.0 pretty quickly, and we went through this iteration cycle. You’ve noticed, probably, that that’s slowed down a little bit. Our product cycle is now, basically twice a year, and it will probably end up being once a year when things start settling down, because a platform that’s moving — it’s hard for developers to keep up. I want developers to basically leverage the innovation. I don’t want developers to have to predict the innovation.

Xperia x10 2.1 update leaked

Whilst x10 users are waiting for their 2.1 update we have some leaked images of Android 2.1 running on the x10. The Android 2.1 however does not have Sony Ericssons UXP Interface running on it so it must be in the early stages of development.  These images where posted up on a Chinese site – sebbsit.168.com

Smile

Hacked Nexus One supports 720p HD video recording

It seems that the Nexus One can record 720p HD videos by running the Cyanogen’s CM5.0.8test3 mod (does not work with Android 2.2 / Froyo) developed by one of the developers in the xda-developers community. Download the files needed to hack the Nexus One from here.

The officially unofficial Android 2.2 upgrade list

One of the questions we hear on Twitter and through the contact page most often is "will my phone get Froyo?"  I can't blame anyone for asking, or for wanting it, cause all the changes are oh so nice.  Our standard answer has always been what we can confirm with the manufacturers, which to be fair and honest, isn't much yet.  Trust me, we bug them because we're Android fanatics and want to know just as much as you all do Smiley

Thankfully, there's always speculation and rumors to tide us over until we get word (or even better, see that update available screen).  We talk about it on the Podcast.  We talk about it with each other via e-mail.  We talk about it in the forums.  We want it.  When a reader sent in a tip that PC World has compiled a list of phones and their upgrade to Froyo status, it got our attention.  We can't vouch for anything on the list, so insert a grain of salt the size of a beach ball, follow the break and check it out. [with a tip of the hat to PC World] Thanks lastdetailwd!

Phones 'definitely' getting Froyo:
Nexus One
Motorola Droid
HTC Droid Incredible
HTC Evo 4G
MyTouch 3G
MyTouch 3G Slide
HTC Desire
HTC Aria

Phones not expected to get Froyo:
T-Mobile's G1
Samsung Behold II

List of phones where the upgrade looks 'iffy':
Motorola Devour
HTC Droid Eris
Motorola Backflip

Remember, none of this is set in stone yet. Carriers and manufacturers have a ton to do with it. And PC World's list here is a good one. I honestly believe that Google and the carriers would like every phone to get Froyo, just to unify things a bit.  Too bad I'm not in charge of the Division of Froyo Updates -- or maybe that's a good thing.

Screen Comparison Shows LCD Still Beats Super AMOLED In Sunlight

Samsung's Super AMOLED screens have caused quite a stir lately, and as this video comparison shows, it certainly handles direct sunlight better than an AMOLED screen. When put next to an LCD though, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference.

That's not good news for Samsung, though they'll be heartened to hear that the Super AMOLED on their Galaxy S performed much better in the shade than the HTC Desire (an AMOLED screen phone) and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, which has an LCD. Take a look at the example below, which shows the X10 on the left, the Galaxy S on the right, and the Desire nestled in between. There's not a ton of difference between the LCD and Super AMOLED, but I'd say that the LCD would make for an easier read while out and about.
