The 2010 Mobile World Congress will be held 15-18 February, in Barcelona Spain.


For four days, this beautiful Mediterranean city will become the place for mobile leaders to gather, collaborate, conduct business and experience VISION IN ACTION.

The Samsung Unpacked event

The Samsung S8500 Wave is Samsung’s headliner and the worst kept secret at this year’s MWC. But there’s nothing to keep under wraps now: the ocean comes with this here Wave, but several others washed ashore too.

Samsung were fashionably late for their own Unpacked event in Barcelona but they obviously had no intention to wait for the WMC to grind into motion. Not with two big announcement to make. The Samsung S8500 Wave was all over the place anyway, but they seem keen to make the new bada OS the toast of town.

The S8500 Wave is Samsung’s first handset running the bada OS, an expandable smart platform to tap in on the company’s own app store (Samsung Apps). It’s a smartphone built around the familiar and friendly TouchWiz so users feel at home. Samsung claim they’re keen to make smartphones available to all.

Acer “Liquid e” comes with Android 2.1, Snapdragon CPU and WVGA touchscreen



Acer has used the Mobile World Congress to unveil the new member to its family – Liquid e. Powered by Android, the new smartphone keeps the all-touchscreen form factor, just like its predecessor – A1. Here’s the specs rundown:

    * Android 2.1 (Éclair)
    * Quad-band GSM/EDGE plus tri-band HSPA (up to 7.2 Mbps on downlink)
    * 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus
    * 3.5-inch WVGA touchscreen
    * Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) 8250 (Snapdragon) 768 MHz CPU
    * 256 MB RAM / 512 MB ROM
    * WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headset jack
    * Accelerometer, light and proximity sensors
    * Dataviz’s software pre-installed – RoadSync and Documents To Go
    * microSD memory card slot
    * 1350 mAh battery (up to 5 hours of talk / 400 hours of standby time)
    * Size: 115×64x12.7 mm / 135 grams

Unfortunately, Acer hasn’t mentioned any pricing nor availability information. We’ll have to push harder their PR folks to get some information. Stay tuned…

LiMo Foundation: New handsets, R3 release and Adobe joins in



LiMo Foundation is full of news at MWC in Barcelona. They’ve issued three press releases:

    * First we got to learn about new LiMo-compliant handsets being launched by NEC, Panasonic (NYSE: PC) and ELSE. Devices include NEC’s docomo STYLE series N-01B and N-03B, docomo PRIME series N-02B; Panasonic’s docomo PRIME series P-01B, docomo STYLE series P-02B and docomo SMART series P-03B; and ELSE INTUITION.     * Then they’ve announced the imminent availability of the new R3 release of LiMo Platform, which major features include support for Location Based Services and contact management, while existing features are extended with support for application management, advanced UI and multimedia technologies, and enhanced security and networking.     * Finally, we had Adobe joining the Foundation to bring Flash to LiMo-powered handsets. (release)

Toshiba TG02 and K01 WinMo smartphones unveiled, both powered by 1GHz CPU



Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) unveiled two new phones at the Mobile World Congress today. We don’t have all the details at present, but I’m sure full specs will emerge within days. The devices announced are the long-time rumored (and FCC approved) TG02 and K01, both of which get their power from a 1GHz CPU (we guess Snapdragon) and both running Windows Mobile 6.5. Here’s the specs rundown:

Toshiba TG02

    * 4.1-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen
    * Super-slim design (9.9mm)
    * Customized 3D user interface

Toshiba K01

    * 4.1-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen
    * Side-sliding QWERTY keyboard
    * Slim body (12.9mm)
    * microSD memory card slot

In addition, I’m guessing both phones sport HSPA and WiFi connectivity, GPS, Bluetooth and so on…

And for the record, we’ve seen these in that leaked Toshiba roadmap back in April of last year.

Motorola launches QUENCH/CLIQ XT, another MOTOBLUR Android smartphone



After the CLIQ/DEXT and Backflip, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is launching another MOTOBLUR UI-enabled Android smartphone – QUENCH aka Zeppelin, which will be available in the U.S. as CLIQ XT exclusively through T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) USA. Unlike two other MOTOBLUR phones, this one lacks a physical keyboard — it’s an all-touchscreen device, with features that include:

    * 3.1-inch 320×480 pixels multi-touch display (pinch and zoom supported)
    * 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus and LED flash
    * WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, FM radio
    * Adobe Flash Lite support
    * Dual microphone noise cancellation technology

Availability wise, the Moto QUENCH will be available in multiple regions around the globe beginning in Q1 2010. T-Mobile USA is getting it beginning next month…

Symbian^3 now officially unveiled, Design Preview looks spectacular

The Symbian Foundation has today unveiled Symbian^3, with details quoted below. And, courtesy of the video-friendly chaps at Nokia Conversations (YouTube channel), we now have an impressive video 'design preview' of Symbian^3 in action. Remember, this is the OS and user interface that will be included in Symbian-powered smartphones in the second half of 2010. Highlights from the video, embedded at high resolution below, are multiple homescreens, 3D 'Coverflow' for music albums, 'single tap' direct manipulation UI everywhere, multitouch (pinching, splaying, to zoom) and live visual multitasking (Web OS/Maemo 5-style). It's quite a visual feast, so look below and enjoy.



And from the Symbian Foundation:

"Symbian^3 is expected to be “feature complete” by the end of Q1. Members of the Symbian community, including device creators, network operators, hardware technology providers, professional services companies and application developers are already engaged with S^3 and the first devices using the platform are expected to ship as early as Q3 this year.


Symbian^3 includes:

    * HDMI support enables users to plug their phone into a TV and watch a high-definition movie at 1080p quality without a Blu-ray player.
       
    * Music store integration embedded within the radio enables users to identify a song and learn more about it. The addition of a “buy now” button, which links with the user’s chosen music store, makes purchasing easy.

    * One-click connectivity for all applications greatly simplifies the process of connecting to the Internet, without interrupting the user. New global settings allow the user to configure platform-wide behaviour, for example ensuring the device automatically switches from cellular to WLAN when a free WLAN network is available.
       
    * Usability enhancements across the user interface include the adoption of a direct “single tap” interaction model, making it much easier to complete common tasks on a device. Multi-touch support for gestures such as “pinch-to-zoom” forms the basis of a gesture framework that can be extended and leveraged by the developer community.
       
    * The Homescreen takes a big step forward with support for multiple pages of widgets and a simple flick gesture to move between them. The widget manager makes discovery and download of new widgets simple and support for multiple instances of a native widget means that consumers can monitor multiple weather forecasts, news feeds, social networking accounts or multiple email accounts simultaneously through a common interface.

The developer experience has also been greatly improved. The Qt toolkit is pre-integrated into all kits and the runtime in Symbian^3 will run on existing devices back to S60 3.1. The Web Runtime support provided in the platform remains a key part of the developer story, allowing web developers to directly re-use their skills in HTML, CSS, Javascript and AJAX to create Homescreen widgets and standalone applications."

Uljepšan i olakšan jeste a što se tiče funkcionisanja, to opet zavisi od rama, procesora i samog OS-a. Vidjećemo kako će se pokazati u praksi.
