Airborne Laser Illuminator Shines

During a series of in-flight tests, the kilowatt-class solid-state illuminator laser for the Airborne Laser (ABL) performed successfully, firing for as long as 90 seconds on more than 50 different occasions. In the finished ABL system, the illuminator's role is to track a boosting ballistic missile, which is then destroyed by the megawatt chemical laser on board.

Quantum Dots Go On the Blink

A random fluctuation of energy levels causes quantum dots to blink, says a team of U.S. scientists. They studied the dots at timescales as short as microseconds. Power spectral density analyses showed the blinking is consistent with emission being controlled by diffusion of energies in electron or hole trap states.

Metamaterials Make News

Soft interference lithography (SIL) can create sheets of gold films patterned with perforations, providing a simple method for mass producing plasmonic metamaterials. Unlike "infinite" arrays, the localized, patterned arrays of holes in plasmonic metamaterials can focus light; their optical transmission characteristics are controlled by structural rather than material properties. In addition, you can learn more about the 3D semiconductor metamaterials developed by Princeton University researchers.

Plasmonic Antenna Goes Subwavelength

Quantum cascade (QC) laser technology has advanced with the development of a plasmonic quantum cascade laser antenna. Harvard researchers formed an optical antenna on the facet of a QC laser using two gold rods spaced a nanometer or so apart. The antenna focuses the mid-IR laser output into a nanometer-scale sub-wavelength spot that can be scanned over a sample for imaging or spectroscopy.

Fiber to the Home Revealed

Fiber to the home — you can hardly turn on the television or radio these days without hearing about it. Want to know more about the specific requirements and design, including passive optical networks (PONs) and point-to-point (PTP) networks? Take a look at this tutorial to learn about architectures, protocols, components, and more.

Cr-doped Fiber Amplifies

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers have long been the mainstay technology, but now alternatives such as chromium (Cr)-doped fiber amplifiers are coming to the forefront. Cr-doped fibers provide broadband amplification over the 1.3 to 1.6 μm spectral band. This paper describes advances in preform fabrication and drawing to achieve improved uniformity and efficiency.

Lasers Destroy Viruses

Femtosecond pulses from an ultrafast laser operating at 425 nm can destroy viruses, say a professor at Arizona State University and his biologist son. By tuning the output to the resonant frequency of the virus, the team was able to shatter its protein shell with 100 fs pulses at a power density of 50 MW cm-2. Applications could include the treatment of HIV or hepatitis

Hybrid Imaging Monitors Biomolecules

Using a hybrid method called force-fluorescence imaging, University of Illinois researchers have imaged the behavior of biomolecules subjected to sub-piconewton forces. The technique combines optical trapping with single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer — the optical tweezers apply the force and the fluorescence technique images the result.
