Tool Times Cut by Design

A Canadian mold maker has slashed its lead times for producing the tools for complex parts by exploiting the ability of its CAD/CAM software system to permit separate development of sub-assemblies within a single file. The technique has already allowed the company to cut the lead time for the tooling for an automotive air dam from 22 weeks to just 16. Now it is looking for further savings by building up a library of intelligent mold bases.
