Sony Ericsson CEO suggests February reveal, perhaps the PlayStation Phone?



Plausible deniability seems to be Sony's strategy when it comes to the PlayStation Phone, and that apparently goes for Sony Ericsson as well -- once again, without actually confirming the existence of the Android-based gaming handset, its manufacturer is hinting strongly at an impending reveal. "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere," CEO Bert Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal, adding that some sort of new Sony Ericsson product will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress this Februrary. While that particular item could easily be the 4.3-inch Anzu slate rather than a PlayStation slider phone, the chief executive didn't seem to shy away from video games in a series of additional quotes. "I haven't dug into that history, but the future might be brighter," he said when asked why a PlayStation Phone isn't already out, and later suggested that gaming might be the ticket to help SE diversify its offerings. "Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn't we use that?" he asked the Journal. We can't think of a single compelling reason, Mr. Nordberg. None at all.

The PlayStation Phone (PSP) with Android spotted on video?



We’re all pretty excited about the upcoming PlayStation Phone and now a tech blog out of Greece has some supposed spy footage of the device in action.

As you can see from the video below, the device in question could definitely be a PlayStation Phone made by Sony Ericsson because it kind of looks like an Xperia X10 but slightly bigger. The video is a little blurry and we also don’t get to see the slide-out joypad which will make this a PSP Phone.

Still, if this is the PlayStation Phone (PSP), it’s pretty darn exciting and it means that the device might be coming soon. We’ve already heard that it could be released as early as February, which could mean the handset is introduced at CES in early January.

What should we expect? Well, earlier leaks indicate that it will have a 1 GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. It will be powered by Android Gingerbread and it should be able to download exclusive games from Sony’s online services.

There are still a lot of questions about a PlayStation Phone powered by Android though. The device will have to have the Android Market on it but will other high-end Android phones have access to the PlayStation games? While that may sound ridiculous at first, other companies like Amazon and Verizon are creating their own app stores on top of Android, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Sony to do the same.

These PSP games probably wouldn’t work well without specialized hardware but Sony could have some sort of partnership with other handset makers to make certain devices PSP-ready. I could also see the company just retain exclusivity as a main selling point.

Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone to launch at MWC, ship in April

Since it obviously hasn’t launched on December 9, like some rumors said it would, people have started wondering when the mythical Sony Ericsson PlayStation/PSP Phone will actually hit the streets. Could it be in March of 2011, like another rumor predicted?

Well, today’s news comes from Pocket-lint as sources have told them that the PlayStation phone will be unveiled in February during Sony Ericsson’s traditional pre-MWC press conference, but it will only ship (in the UK, at least) in April.



Does this make the PlayStation phone less appealing to potential buyers? We’ll have to see, but I don’t think it will have any competitors even in April, so it may be safe. In a niche of its own, but safe there. Of course, its success will depend more on whether Sony Ericsson actually deliver a game experience to go with it, and not just throw some outdated version of Android on it and hope it sticks.

But perhaps they have learned from past mistakes. Anyway, for those eagerly awaiting the PSP phone, it will reach you in about four months. So patience is still very much necessary.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi rumored to be their next flagship

We have some good and some bad news for Sony Ericsson fans. Unfortunately, both the news are pretty much rumors at this point so take them with a pinch of salt.



First the bad news. The Sony Ericsson SK19i, which was supposed to be a variant of the Xperia ray with a slide-out QWERTY keypad, has apparently been cancelled. The phone was being developed for the AT&T network in the US and was to be slotted between the Xperia mini pro and the Xperia pro.

Now for the good news. There is apparently a new flagship device cooking inside Sony Ericsson’s kitchens called the Nozomi (LT26i/LT26a). This device will supposedly have a 4.3-inch 720p display and will be powered by a 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8655T processor with Adreno 205 GPU.

The display specifications sound superb but we are not quite sure if the underlying hardware will be able to run it properly. Then again, it is just a rumor at this point so it would be silly to jump to conclusions. Unfortunately, there is no information as to when this handset might be officially launched.
