Hertha-History 1892-1963

 
1892-1901: The early years

On the 25th of July 1892, two sets of brothers Fritz and Max Linder and Otto and Willi Lorenz, who were all either sixteen or seventeen years of age, founded the club BFC Hertha 92. Somewhere in the districts of Wedding or Prenzlauer Berg, between where the Berlin Wall would run, they played their matches.

The name Hertha comes from the fact that Fritz Linder decided to name the club after a steam boat, which he and his father had made a day trip on. On the funnel of the “Hertha” was the shipping company’s colours, white with blue stripes, which are to this day also the colours of Hertha BSC.

A blue cap was worn by the players in order for them to be distinguished from the other team. The team did not wear club jerseys until the turn of the century.

In 1901 Hertha became a member of the German Association of Ball Playing Clubs (VDB). In the first season Hertha took their place in the two second league and fi-nished in second place.

 

1902-1914: The development of the club’s structure

In 1904 Hertha moved to Gesundbrunnen, in the district of Wedding, with the sup-port of restaurant owner Joseph Schebera, who paid the rent on the new ground. The stadium, which was little more than a fenced pitch, became known by the fans as the “Plumpe”.

In the season 1905/1906 BFC Hertha 92 won the inaugural Berlin Championship. On the 4th of May 1910 Hertha beat the English club Southend United 3:1 at home. The victory against a team from the birthplace of football brought a lot of attention on the club.

At the end of the 1909/1910 season the club, in the hands of social democrat Wilhelm Wernicke as club president, had a turnover of 20,020.14 Goldmarks and total attendance figures of 17,172 for the 16 home games. There were 177 registered members, including players and fans.

 

1914-1918: World War I

Although from 1915 through to 1919 there was no German Championship, the club continued to play in friendlies. Thirty-six members of Hertha were killed in the war.

 

1919-1933: The highly successful Sobek era and Hertha’s first German Championship

Financial difficulties and relegation fears started to plague the club. But Hertha was capable of some very inventive means of keeping it's head above water. An example from the year 1919:

Spectator Artur Friedemann, himself a member of Hertha’s Berlin Championship winning side of 1914/15, was anxiously watching a decisive match against "Berliner FB von 1910", sprang over the barrier and kicked away the ball as it was rolling into the Hertha net for a certain goal. Both the spectators and Berliner FB players pro-tested, but to no avail. The goal was not given and Hertha hung on for a nil-all draw.

In 1920 the sportingly successful Hertha merged with the rich Berliner Sport-Club. From then on the new club was known as Hertha BSC. In the same year the attack-ing midfielder Karl Tewes was signed. He was credited with inventing the “Stopper tactic”.

With Hanne Sobeck, probably Berlin’s most popular footballer of all time, Hertha BSC reached from 1926 20 1931 the final of the German Championship six times. After four defeats in a row in the final, Hertha won the next two titles (1930,1931).

 

1933 -1945: Being "Brought into line" by the Nazi dictatorship

During the Third Reich, the Nazi’s overhauled the club’s structure. Hans Pfeifer, a Nazi party member, was installed as the new president of the club to insure that the ideology of Hitler’s regime was followed. By that time, Wilhelm Wernicke was work-ing in Hamburg

The club had suffered as a result of the great devastation of World War II. In May 1945 the old stadium, at the “Plumpe”, was in shambles. The pitch has been hit by over 200 bombs, with many unexploded strewn everywhere. Parts of the stands had also burnt down. The Allied Forces temporary disbanded the club and used their facilities as their headquarters. Later Wilhelm Wernicke was to help rebuild Hertha BSC.

 

1946-1963: Hertha and exceptional home town

In the 1949/50 season, a group of players and their coach Helmut Schoen fled the East German  city of Dresden and signed for Hertha BSC. Ignatz Bubis, a future Chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, supported the daring escape by organising the getawawy car. As a result of this episode, the club was banned from playing against any DDR teams for one year.


In the 50’s there were many clashes with arch-rivals Tennis Borussia, which Hertha managed to win the lion’s share of. During the 1958/59 season, a merger with TeBe was proposed, but the idea was flatly rejected by members with a 263:3 vote result.

Entry to the Bundesliga

At the time of the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963, Hertha was Berlin's reigning champion and so became an inaugural member of the new professional national league. In spite of finishing clear of the relegation zone, the team was demoted after the 1964-65 season following attempts to bribe players to play in the city under what had become decidedly unpleasant circumstances after the erection of the Berlin Wall. This caused something of a crisis for the Bundesliga which wanted for political reasons to continue to have a team in its ranks representing the former capital. Through various machinations this led to the promotion of Tasmania 1900 Berlin, which then delivered the worst-ever performance in Bundesliga history. Hertha managed a return to the premier German league in 1968-69 and developed a solid following making it Berlin's favorite side.

However, Hertha was again soon touched by scandal through its involvement with several other clubs in the Bundesliga match fixing scandal of 1971. In the course of an investigation of Hertha's role, it was also revealed that the club was 6 million DM in debt. Financial disaster was averted through the sale of the team's former home ground.

In spite of this, the team continued to enjoy a fair measure of success on the field through the 70's with a second place Bundesliga finish behind Borussia Moenchengladbach in 1974-75, a semi-final appearance in the 1979 UEFA Cup, and two appearances in the final of the German Cup (1977 and 1979). The following season saw the fortunes of the team take a turn for the worse as they were relegated to 2.Bundesliga where they would spend thirteen of the next seventeen seasons.

Plans in 1982 for a merger with Tennis Borussia, Blau Weiss 90 and SC Charlottenburg to form a side derisively referred to as FC Utopia never came to fruition. Hertha slipped as low as the third tier Amateur Oberliga Berlin where they spent two seasons (1986-87 and 1987-88). Two turns in the Bundesliga (1982-83 and 1990-91) saw the team immediately relegated after poor performances. Hertha's amateur side enjoyed a greater measure of success, advancing all the way to the final of the German Cup in 1993 where their run ended in a close 0:1 defeat at the hands of Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

Financial woes once more burdened the club in 1994 as it found itself 10 million DM in debt. The crisis was again resolved through the sale of real estate holdings in addition to the signing of a new sponsor and management team. By 1997 Hertha found its way back to the Bundesliga where they have generally managed to finish in the upper third of the slate. When Hertha was promoted in 1997, it ended Berlin's ten-year-long drought without a Bundesliga side – Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin had been the last club to represent the city in the top division.

Most recently, bright spots for the side have been a continuous string of appearances in international play in the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League beginning in the 1999 season, and the signing of players such as Sebastian Deisler and Brazilian international Marcelinho, named the Bundesliga's player of the year in May of 2005. Hertha has also invested heavily in its own youth football academy, which has produced several players with Bundesliga potential.

The team was almost relegated in the 2003-04 season, but rebounded and finished 4th the following season, but missed out on the Champions League after they were held to a draw on the final day by Hannover 96, which saw Werder Bremen over take them for the spot on the final day. As a thank-you gesture, Werder sent the Hannover squad ninety-six bottles of champagne. In 2005-06 the Herthaner finished 6th, and qualified for the UEFA Cup by defeating FK Moskva in the Intertoto Cup.

The Berlin Olympic Stadium

Hertha BSC plays its matches in Berlin's Olympiastadion. The facility has a capacity of 76,243, making it the second-largest stadium in Germany behind Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion (82,932, including ~67,000 seats).

The stadium hosts the annual German Cup final and was also the site for six matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup as well as the tournament final.

Since 1904, Hertha's home ground was the Plumpe in the city's Wedding (Gesundbrunnen) district. A stadium was built there in 1923 having a capacity of ~35,000 (~3,600 seats). BSC left that facility behind when it joined the Bundesliga in 1963. The sale of the site in 1974 helped the club avoid bankruptcy

Branič berlinske Herthe i hrvatske reprezentacije oštro je kažnjen od strane njemačkog nogometnog saveza za jučerašnje isključenje.

Nakon što je jučer isključen u susretu njemačkog kupa između Herthe i Wuppertala, našem reprezentativcu danas je DFB odredio kaznu od 4 utakmice zabrane igranja u njemačkom kupu.

Posljedica je to nesportskog Šimunićeva poteza iz 75. minute sinoćnje utakmice koju je Hertha izgubila 2-0.

Nakon što ga je igrač Wuppertala Manuel Bölstler faulirao, Josip je uzvratio psovkama i zahvatom prema licu pa mu je sudac sasvim zasluženo pokazao put u svlačionicu.

Talijanski sportski agent Sabatino Durante navodi da je Fiorentina iznimno zainteresirana za kupnju Joea Šimunića, obrambenog igrača Herthe iz Berlina.

Australac koji igra za reprezentaciju Hrvatske primio je veoma atraktivnu ponudu Fiorentine još prošle sezone nakon završenog Svjetskog prvenstva odigranog u Njemačkoj, ali je tada Šimunić odbio Viole jer se uspio dogovoriti sa poslodavcima oko produženja ugovora.

No, čini se da Fiorentina i dalje želi Šimunića primamiti u svoje redove, pa su spremni dati mu plaću skoro duplo veću od one koju sada zarađuje u Herthi.
