u avijaciji se zene nisu proslavile u 2.sv ratu (dodushe celo sovjetsko vazduhoplovstvo je bilo prilichno loshe ). chast izuzecima poput one litvak ,ali za dobrog pilota-lovca su potrebni chelichni zivci ,lovachki instikt i kontrola emocija (a to su stvari koje ne odlikuju zene) .zbog toga su jedinice koje su bile zenske trpele vece gubitke od mushkih ,pa su do kraja rata zene potiskivane u sekundarne uloge (nocni bombarderi -night witches) .posle rata ,i pored ideoloshkih odredbi o ravnopravnosti , vvs se odreklo zena - tradicija koja je nastavljena u rusiji do danas ...

Female Military Pilots in Finnish Air Force

Many air forces globally have female pilots flying helicopters, liaison aircraft, some even high-performance interceptor. E.g. Norwegian Air Force has one female F-16 Falcon pilot with over 600 falcon flight hours. However, US Air Force and US Navy did not use female pilots in Combat Flight Missions until November 1993. Especially US Navy has done a lot research work in order to evaluate female fighter pilot`s ability to perform in combat situations with high-performance interceptors. First two female student pilots started their training in Air Force Academy of Finnish Air Force August 1997.

Recently Carreta (psychologist, Amstrom laboratory, US Air Force) reported that despite male-female mean scores of US Air Force Pilot Selection test differ, confirmatory analyses indicated that the same factors were measured in psychological evaluation. However, male and female cadets performed equally well in Cadet School and their flying skills showed similar structure. Conclusion is that from aviation psychological point of view female and male pilots are in the same line.

The military aviation physiological point of view is not so clear. There are no good studies on this subject. We know that US Navy has a lot of problems with female pilot`s + Gz tolerance. Three years ago 50 % of US Navy T-38 student pilots could not found G-suit that would fit. Female anatomy especially in pelvis area is very different to male anatomy and all G-suits are designed for male pilots ! This year US Navy introduced a new female shape G-suit, but still 20 % of female pilots has problems with unfit G-suit. Of course unfit G-suit will drop G-tolerance up to 2.5 G.

Dr. Chelette from Amstrong Laboratory, Us Air Force, did a study with nine female fighter pilots in the Dynamic Environment Simulator (DES). DES is normal fighter simulator situated in centrifuge and these female subjects performed a complex combat flight mission in high + Gz environment (max +9 Gz). Results showed that G-tolerance with fit G-suits is the same compared to male fighter pilots. However, female flight performance was 15% lower than male fighter pilot performance in equal conditions. Conclusion is that female fighter pilots have to push much harder in high G environment and this effort will decrease their ability to make correct tactical maneuvers in order to get clear gun or missile shot.

Based on discussions with Dr. Hamalainen, M.D., Ph.D. (Air Force Academy of FAF), possibility of G-induced neck injuries in female pilots is predicted to higher compared to male pilots. No studies are done on this issue, but in car accidents incidence of whisp splash neck injuries is 20 % higher in females based on anatomical structure of female neck.

In near future Finnish Air Force will make decision about female pilots in active duty in FAF. There are examples even in Scandinavia that female pilot can fly high-performance aircraft. On the other hand, most female pilots in other air forces are situated in liaison or helicopter squadrons. Finnish Air Force policy is to train only interceptor pilots, when applicants are selected for cadet school. From my point of view, FAF should consider the decision very carefully in order not to get disappointments and money waste during interceptor pilot training.

Military Women Can Hack It

Female soldiers have long fought off perceptions that their bodies just aren't equipped to handle the rigors of training and warfare. But a decade's worth of research suggests that women are hardly as fragile as critics once thought.

A new study by military researchers found that many assumptions about female bodies are "astoundingly wrong." Women are just as good as men -- in some cases, perhaps even better -- at handling intense exercise and decompression sickness.

The findings, reported in the Journal of Women's Health, don't change the fact that women -- on the whole -- are smaller and less powerful than men. Still, they suggest "that human physiology is more consistent than would be suggested by the social embellishments and exaggerations" that come about when there isn't any actual research, said Col. Karl Friedl, commander of the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine and co-author of the report (.pdf).

Friedl examined the results of more than 130 studies that followed a 1994 order from Congress to spend $40 million on biomedical research into women in the military.

One of the most surprising findings "was the reversal of the age-old belief that high-volume exercise would be harmful to the reproductive system of women" and hurt their bones, Friedl said.

Many female athletes experience a cessation in their menstrual periods when they train heavily. According to Friedl, some researchers theorized that women need a certain level of body fat to menstruate; others thought the simple act of running hurt the ovaries.

Not so, researchers found. Like men, women lose the ability to reproduce if they expend more in energy than they take in through food. "But if they eat enough to match the demands of work or exercise, everything remains intact," Friedl said.

In military terms, this finding means that women don't need to get a pass from certain kinds of high-impact exercise, he said.

Another assumption has been that women had weaker bones than men and were therefore more vulnerable to injury. Indeed, elderly women are especially prone to osteoporosis -- a form of bone decay -- and fractures.

But a form of technology known as dual energy X-ray absorptiometry allowed researchers to get a better look at the minerals in bones. They found that while women's bones can't handle the same stresses as men because they're in smaller bodies, women's bones are still quite efficient.

"Relative to the demands put on them, they may be stronger than men," said Johns Hopkins University bone specialist Thomas Beck, whose research is cited in the Journal of Women's Health report.

"In absolute terms, they have weaker bones. But relative to the demands put on them, they may be stronger than men," he said. "They adapt to loading in a very similar way that men do, and may even have a slight advantage that is related to estrogen."

This means that women can still undergo intensive training, although statistics suggest they might have fewer fractures if they train separately from men, Beck said.

In addition to supporting female soldiers in training, research also produced positive findings for female pilots. If they're outfitted properly, they can handle G-forces just as well as men and may be a bit better at tolerating decompression without becoming ill.

Previously, some in the military thought that women couldn't perform as well as men in the hypergravity encountered in fighter aircraft, said Christopher Hearon, a kinesiology researcher at Texas A&M-Kingsville who studied G-forces while working for the Air Force Research Laboratory at Brooks Air Force Base. The concern was that women didn't have enough endurance to handle something called an "anti-G straining maneuver," which requires contractions of various muscle groups and rapid breathing.

"Basically, it helps return blood -- which is forced into the extremities by the high G force -- to the heart and brain, keeping the pilots from passing out," Hearon said.

If pilots can't handle the intense maneuver, they're at major risk during flights that encounter high G-force, Hearon said. Women traditionally had more trouble with the maneuver than men.

Hearon and colleagues outfitted women with newly designed anti-G suits to see if that helped. It did, and the women surprised the researchers by performing as well as the men.

So, are male and female soldiers essentially the same? Hardly, said LTC Rachel Evans, a bone health researcher with the U.S. Army. Men still have an advantage in brute strength, for example.

"Women definitely have a place in the military," she said. "But we should look at men and women differently."
