Main sections of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition

The 10th International Architecture Exhibition will take place from 10 September to 19 November 2006, directed by Richard Burdett. Dedicated to Cities, architecture and society , this edition focuses on the key factors facing large scale metropolitan areas around the world: from migration to mobility, from social integration to sustainable growth.

A novelty of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition is the addition of two collateral sections, the Cities of Stone project in Venice, and City-Port in Palermo which complement and expand the theme of the international exhibition by exploring specific urban themes and conditions in southern Italy.

50 Countries have accepted the Venice Biennale's invitation to take part in the 10th International Architecture Exhibition. The City, in its many-sided aspects, is a key subject that each Country can deal with under a specific and original perspective.

“More than half of the world’s population lives in cities”, states the Director of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition, Richard Burdett. “A century ago, it was less than 10%. The 21st century will be the first truly urban era, in which more than 75% of the world’s population will live in urban areas, much of it in mega-cities with more than 20 million inhabitants concentrated in the countries undergoing rapid development in Asia ,Africa and South America . In the meantime, many Western and European cities are shrinking, or have been forced to re-invent themselves in order to adapt to a post-industrial condition.

The aim is both to inform and provoke a debate on the way we shape the future of urban society, just at the point that cities represent such a critical mass of the global agenda. It is an attempt to re-engage the physical structure of cities – their buildings, spaces and streets which is the domain of architects and urban designers – with the social, cultural and economic dimensions of urban existence. Despite, the informed perceptions of urban thinkers – from Jane Jacobs to Aldo Rossi , from Saskia Sassen to Rem Koolhaas – the architectural profession has perhaps been overly insulated from this interdisciplinary debate. By bringing the everyday life of cities from around the world to Venice, and by inviting research institutions to share their visions for urban intervention, the 10th International Architecture Exhibition Cities, architecture and society  is designed to make a cultural contribution to one of the most press ing social questions facing mankind in the 21st century.”

Using photography, film and mixed-media presentations, Cities, architecture and society has been designed by Aldo Cibic and Luigi Marchetti - Cibic&Partners to recreate the urban experiences of 16 world cities in four different continents within the 300-metre long Corderie dell’Arsenale. These include: Barcelona , Spain (population: 4,424,000); Berlin, Germany (population: 3,328,000); Bogotá , Colombia (population: 7,594,000); Cairo , Egypt (population: 11,146,000); Caracas , Venezuela (population: 3,276,000); Istanbul, Turkey (population: 9,760,000); Johannesburg , South Africa (population: 3,288,000); London , Great Britain (population: 7,615,000); Los Angeles United States (population: 12,146,000); Mexico City , Mexico (population: 19,013,000); Milan-Torino , Italy (population: 4,007,000 and 1,182,000); Mumbai , India (population: 18,336,000); New York , United States (population: 18,498,000); São Paulo , Brazil (population: 18,333,000); Shanghai , China (population: 12,665,000); and Tokyo , Japan (population: 35,327,000).

The exhibition will not only feature information and data on how these cities are being transformed in social, economic and cultural terms but also display new architectural and urban projects that are affecting the way people live, work and move in the dense metropolitan environment of these world cities.

The Padiglione Italia will be transformed into a window on the state-of-the-art of urban research in cities. Twelve influential research and teaching institutions from Italy ,Mexico ,India ,Germany ,Great Britain ,Holland ,Switzerland ,UK and the USA will display design work and ideas on cities, reflecting the current re-engagement of the architectural profession with social and economic processes. The Berlage Institute form Rotterdam will describe different ways of reading and intervening in different urban conditions. Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA/AMO) will present recent research on Lagos and Dubai . The ETH Basel Contemporary City Studio will show an analytical portrait of Switzerland and its emerging urban geographies. The MIT Senseable Cities Laboratory will show original digital mapping on Real Time Rome, tracking mobile phone and movement patterns. The University of Texas at Austin is exploring the social and political impacts of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans and other cities affected by the natural disaster. The Universidad Iberoamericana , the Urban Design Research Institute and the Istituto Universitario Architettura Venezia (IUAV) will analyse the relationship between urban design and global change in Mexico City , Mumbai and Venice and its regional hinterland. The Royal College of Art in London will develop concepts of the emerging ‘ecstacity’ as a reflection on contemporary urban life. The Architecture Foundation in London and The MoMA will collaborate to an innovative media project to realize a live radio station during the Venice Biennale preview. The Schrumpfende Städte - Shrinking Cities project will describe the effect of de-industrialisation on the quality of life in European and American cities. The central space of the Padiglione Italia will be dedicated to an exhibition of city photographs curated by C-Photo Magazine , providing a historic panorama of how cities have captured the imagination of photographers and artists around the globe for over a century.

Under the overarching theme of Cities, architecture and society , there are a number of significant collateral events and initiatives that provide a truly global perspective on cities in addition to the main exhibition on sixteen world cities within the Corderie. These collateral sections, under the banner of the Italian government’s Sensi Contemporanei project , include Claudio d’Amato Guerrieri ’s exhibition, Cities of Stone , to be held at the Artiglierie dell’Arsenale in Venice, and Rinio Bruttomesso ’s exhibition, City-Port , which will take place in Palermo.

50 countries have already confirmed their participation in the 10th International Architecture Exhibition, providing a unique overview on how architects, planners and designers are responding different urban complexities around the world. The national pavilions will feature a range of urban and architectural projects responding to the press ures of contemporary life: migration, urban sprawl, de-industrialisation and social change. The examples presented include the case of extreme suburbanisation in Ireland , exponential urban growth in Asia , racial exclusion in post-apartheid South Africa , the effect of new architecture in the urban regeneration of towns and cities of northern England .and a new vision of the city in Italy .

Over twenty architecture schools from Italy and abroad will be invited to engage with the core theme of the Cities, Architecture and Society exhibition, and their work will be displayed in the Padiglione Italia from 8-19 November 2006. The Learning from cities project will be co-ordinated by Francesco Garofalo .

During the three months that the exhibition is open, a series of conferences , co-ordinated by Guido Martinotti , will explore the central themes of urban governance, mobility and the quality of urban life.

With its diverse insights, initiatives and perspectives, the Padiglione Italia and individual displays within the national pavilions will complement the detailed narratives of 16 world cities and, in tandem with the Cities of Stone exhibition in the Arsenale , will provide the visitor to this Architecture Biennale with a rich and diverse experience of urban life. The 10 th Architecture Exhibition will conclude with a manifesto for the cities of the 21st century dedicated to the potential contribution that architecture and urban design can make to a more sustainable, democratic and fair world.

Cities, architecture and society will be accompanied by a monograph published by Marsilio , covering the themes and contents of the international exhibition at the Corderie dell’Arsenale , with essays by Richard Burdett and Saskia Sassen as well as interviews with architects and social critics on the interactions between architecture and the city. It will also include profiles of the selected cities with comparative data on social and economic change, and insights into the key aspects of city life as well as summaries of the work presented by international research institutions featured in the Padiglione Italia. A second volume documents the exhibitions in the national pavilions, collateral events, conferences and special projects.

Cities of Stone - curated by Claudio D’Amato Guerrieri
A collateral section of the Sensi Contemporanei project
Venice , Artiglierie dell’Arsenale - 10th September to 19th November 2006

Cities of Stone a collateral section of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition curated by Claudio D’Amato Guerrieri , and organized within the framework of the Sensi Contemporanei project , is dedicated to the cities whose principal characteristic was having been conceived and organically built in stone until the decline of the structural conceptions based on load-bearing masonry decreed the end of the critical and constructional success of this material. “An exhibition – explains Claudio D’Amato Guerrieri – that arises from the conviction that there are Mediterranean architectural ideals that exist and continue to be vital today, but they risk being swept away; and that there is a need for a strong critical conscience to contrast the threat arising from the processes of cultural homologation at work on a planetary scale.” Mediterranean cities are cities of stone, directly generated by the Greek and Roman civilization, by its particular form of rationality, whose esthetic values over time have become ideals shared by Western culture. The exhibition project raises a series of questions about the dominating models that govern the urban and landscape transformations in progress, and about alternative hypotheses to those founded on the myth of a deconstructed modernist architecture, devoid of memory, uprooted from its tradition.

Cities of Stone intends to raise the question of the critical recognition, in a thematic area that is rarely explored in research, of the potential relevance of the culture of masonry, understood not only as continuity with traditional building techniques, but also as a process of radically updating them.

The section will be held in the Artiglierie dell’Arsenale , and entry will be greeted by a 15-meter tall obelisk and a barrel vault 6 meters in diameter. Two prototypes of the art of modern stone-cutting (stereotomy) which will concretely demonstrate new possibilities in the structural use of this ancient yet highly modern material. The first of the three exhibition areas into which the section is divided, entitled The Other Modernity, presents spectacular two and three dimensional reconstructions illustrating the golden age of 1930’s masonry architecture: giant black and white photographic prints and models made with rapid prototyping will illustrate the principal issues that brought fame to the cities of the southern Mediterranean, from Algiers to Thessaloniki, from Rhodes and the Dodecanese to the foundation cities in Italy and Libya, from Alexandria to Tirana. An in-depth analysis is made of the construction method and the architectural language which reinterpreted the tradition of great inventions such as the seafront walkways, all the way back to the ancient origins represented by the Greek cities, which revolutionized their era. The first modern city in history, Alexander the Great’s Alexandria , designed by Dinocrates, is the object of special attention, through the reconstruction of the lighthouse, one of the symbols of this exhibition.

Stereotomic Architecture borrows the themes proposed by the actual size of the obelisk and vault at the entrance: it is dedicated to illustrating the principles of renewed stereotomic art: on exhibit are two models of stone bridges dedicated to the city of Venice .

Project South (Progetto Sud ) is the true heart of the exhibition and will present the results of an international competition for ideas focusing on four sites in southern Italy : Punta Perotti in Bari ; the port of Crotone ; the Latomie dei Cappuccini in Siracusa; the tourist port in Pantelleria. A debate surrounding ideas dedicated to the themes of landscape restoration in southern Italy , beginning with the demolition of the speculative buildings that have obfuscated its beauty in recent decades. Project South harks back to Progetto Venezia, promoted the first time by Aldo Rossi in 1985, which launched the idea of an architectural exhibition as a free platform for ideas, and intends to be a tribute to the figure and the work of a master.

The design proposals will be evaluated by an international jury presided by Claudio D’Amato Guerrieri.

The website www.labiennale.archinauti.it, created for this occasion, will accompany professionals and potential visitors through the date of inauguration, describing the progress and the stages of adv ancement of the project.

An international congress dedicated to the subjects treated in this section will take place in Venice in November.

The catalogue, published by Marsilio , will be articulated in two volumes: a thematic monograph and a volume on Project South .

Claudio D’Amato Guerrieri (Bari , 1944) is a professor of Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Bari and has been Dean of the same Faculty. Internationally, he has promoted, coordinated and developed many projects concerning the Balkan areas and in general the Mediterranean and the Middle-East.

City - Port - curated by Rinio Bruttomesso
A collateral section within the framework of the Sensi Contemporanei project
Palermo - 15th October 2006 to 14th January 2007

City – Port ,a collateral section of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition curated by Rinio Bruttomesso, and organized within the framework of the Sensi Contemporanei project, is articulated into four exhibitions located, for the first time in the history of the Biennale di Venezia, in Palermo in three different venues , and will be exhibited in other port cities in southern Italy in 2007.

City – Port. Local Gate to the Global Market will be the international exhibition hosted in the splendid nineteenth-century Palazzo Forcella de Seta, kindly made available by the Sicilian chapter of ANCE and currently being restored by architect Italo Rota, who is also responsible for the design of the exhibition. Organized in collaboration with Puertos del Estado – Ministerio de Formento, Spain, and the Korea Land Corporation, Seoul, Korea, it will present a panorama of 15 case studies of port cities on different continents, with plans and projects involving their urban-port waterfronts: Oslo, Helsinki, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Rotterdam, Rosario (Argentina), Valparaiso (Chile), Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, Cape Town, Incheon (Korea), Yokohama, Sydney, Genoa and Venice. A special space will be dedicated to the city-ports of Spain , which relied on a concept of national system not only to modernize their ports, but to make their port cities more livable, by revitalizing their waterfronts with results that often achieve absolute excellence.

City – Port. Great South , located in the venue of S. Erasmo, will focus on 10 port cities in the south of Italy to offer an overall view of initiatives to requalify urban-port waterfronts, some complete and others in the planning stages, by the city governments and Port Authorities in 5 Italian regions: Pescara in the Abruzzo region; Naples and Salerno in the Campania region; Bari and Brindisi in the Puglia Region; Reggio Calabria in the Calabria region; Catania, Messina, Siracusa and Trapani in Sicily.

City-Port. Palermo, Mediterranean, which is also on exhibit at S. Erasmo given the affinity between the themes, has been produced in collaboration with the Regione Siciliana, the City of Palermo, the Port Authority of Palermo, the Officina di Architettura del Porto, Palermo. The exhibition will be dedicated to Palermo ’s experience in reorganizing its port and its urban waterfront.
The two exhibitions at S. Erasmo , a former locomotive warehouse built at the turn of the twentieth century and belonging to the City of Palermo , have been designed by CLIOSTRAAT (alessandra raso, luca poncellini, matteo raso, stefano testa).

City – Port. Portus Architecture Prize , organized by Expa at the Galleria di Architettura Expa in the ancient stables of Palazzo Cefalà, will present the winning projects in the Portus Architecture Prize for the 7 regions of southern Italy participating in the Sensi Contemporanei project.

The Portus Architecture Prize has been organized under the patronage of the CNAPPC Consiglio Nazionale degli Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori, in collaboration with Inarcassa, Edilizia e Territorio – Il Sole 24 Ore, InArch. The prize is addressed to architects, engineers and landscape architects under the age of 40, who must define solutions for the requalification of urban waterfront zones, selected in the 7 Regions of southern Italy involved in the Sensi Contemporanei project.

The design projects will be evaluated by an international jury presided by Richard Burdett, Director of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia.
The website www.premioportus.it , created for the occasion, will accompany professionals and potential visitors through the date of inauguration, describing the progress and the stages of adv ancement of the project.
The catalogue, published by Marsilio , will be articulated in two volumes: a thematic monograph and a volume on the Portus Architecture Prize .

Projekat „Beograd”

... > Richard Rogers Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement...

The Board of La Biennale di Venezia, presided by Davide Croff, has accepted the proposal by Director Richard Burdett to award the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition (10th September – 19th November) to Richard Rogers.

Richard Rogers has a distinguished career as architect and is responsible for some of the most iconic buildings of the last twenty five years including the Centre Pompidou in Paris (with Renzo Piano) and Lloyd's of London. His career has been driven by a passion for cities as an architect, urbanist, adviser and author, promoting the importance of architecture in making cities more sustainable and equitable in the context of a rapidly urbanising world.

Rogers said: “I’m passionate about cities. They are the most complex of artefacts and many are in great need of revitalisation. I am, therefore, extremely delighted to learn that I will be receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement award for my work on cities at this year’s Venice Biennale. A lifetime is a long time - but in terms of the work I’d still like to do, I’m already beginning to think it’s not long enough. I would like to thank everyone - from my wonderful colleagues and collaborators to my family - for the fantastic support they have given to me over the years. I have long been fascinated with the concept of sustainable cities and the role of regeneration in improving the quality of urban life. Cities are places for the face-to-face meeting of people, for the exchange of ideas and for trade. Creating more compact cities through better design which responds to social and environmental concerns is the only way we will create a more desirable form of urban living and reverse the drift of people from cities to the countryside. My own approach to design - and that of my architectural practice, RRP - is guided by this idea.”

The Golden Lion was awarded in Venice on Sunday, September 10th, first day of the Exhibition, during a brief ceremony at the Giardini della Biennale which followed the official opening at 10.30 a.m.

All the other prizes of the 10th International Architecture Exhibition - Golden Lion for the best National Participation, Golden Lion for the best City, Golden Lion for the best the Urban Project, Special Award for a School of Architecture, Leoni di Pietra and Premio di Architettura Portus - will be awarded during an official ceremony on November 8th at the Teatro alle Tese, Arsenale.

Richard Rogers
The Lord Rogers of Riverside

Richard Rogers was born in Florence, Italy in 1933. He received a diploma in Architecture from the Architectural Association in London, and a Masters from Yale University USA. Best known for his pioneering buildings with Norman Foster, Renzo Piano and since 1978 with his colleagues at the Richard Rogers Partnership, he has maintained a lifelong commitment to the relationship between architecture, the environment, culture and society. In parallel to his prime activity as an architect and urban designer, he has been closely involved with many of the UK's major arts and public organisations. He was Chairman of the Tate Gallery from 1981 to 1989, Deputy Chairman of the Arts Council of England from 1994 to 1997 and Chairman of The Architecture Foundation until June 2001. He is an Honorary Trustee of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, as well as President of The National Communities Resource Centre.

The first architect to be invited to give the BBC Reith Lectures in 1995, Rogers’ text - 'Cities for a small planet' - argued for a more equitable and sustainable approach to the built environment, placing the design of cities at the heart of the public and political agenda. Richard Rogers is Chairman to the Mayor’s Design for London Group, as well as Adviser to the Mayor of Barcelona on urban strategies.

In 1971, Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano were the winners of an international competition for the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, a museum, library and information centre. The building has been visited by over 100 million people since its completion in 1976.  The work of the Richard Rogers Partnership, formed in 1977, is based on the use of appropriate technologies to reduce energy consumption, maximising social potential and responding to changing patterns of use and activity. The practice has designed award-winning public and private buildings in Europe, Asia and the USA, including Lloyd's of London (London, 1986), Channel 4 Headquarters (London, 1994), the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, 1995), Law Courts in Bordeaux (1998), VR Techno Plaza (Gifu, Japan, 1998), 88 Wood Street (London, 1999), the Millennium Dome (London, 1999) and Lloyd’s Register of Shipping (London, 2000). Recently completed projects include the new National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff, Madrid Barajas Airport, Terminal 4 and Law Courts in Antwerp. Current projects include Heathrow Terminal 5, the redevelopment of a bullring in Barcelona and a 48 storey office tower in the City of London.

The commitment to the public realm and sustainable design underpins a series of urban masterplans in cities around the world. These include the masterplan for Pu Dong Financial District in Shanghai, the radical ecological proposals for ParcBIT in Majorca and visionary plans for the centre of London, originally exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1986.  In London, the practice is author of the Greenwich Peninsula masterplan, proposals for the Bankside masterplan adjacent to Tate Modern and Convoys Wharf in Deptford.

Richard Rogers has published and lectured widely. He has received numerous international awards, including the RIBA Royal Gold Medal (1985), the Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur (1986), the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Medal In Architecture (1999) and the Praemium Imperiale in 2000. Two key publications are 'Cities for a small planet' (based on his BBC Reith Lectures) and ‘Cities for a small country’ (with Professor Ann Power). In 1991 he was knighted by H.M. The Queen for his contributions to architecture. He was made a life peer in 1996.

In 1998 Richard Rogers was commissioned by the UK government to chair the Urban Task Force and in June 1999 his team published a report, ‘Towards an Urban Renaissance’, containing wide-ranging proposals for urban regeneration in the UK. Many of these recommendations were incorporated in the Government’s Urban White Paper, announced in November 2000. The Urban Summit, held in London in November 2002, focused on key issues raised in the UTF Report.
