Paragvaj - zemlja zena

A review by Anthony Daniels of a history of Paraguay.

Here's his account of the most extraordinary period of Paraguayan history:

Its first post-independence leader (from 1811 to 1840), Dr Jose Gaspar
Rodriguez de Francia, known as "el Supremo", instituted what can only be
called the first totalitarian state. He allowed no one into the country
and no one & he insisted that all pure-blooded Europeans married
non-Europeans, for the sake of racial & he instituted a reign of
absolute terror, and was himself the most terrorised citizen of all. He made
his sister unroll his cigars in case they had been & he had the trees
of Asuncion cut down lest they hid & he slept every night in a
different bed. Interestingly, Thomas Carlyle wrote an essay in his defence,
thus starting a great tradition of intellectuals who defended totalitarian
despots.

The second leader, Carlos Lopez, was described as a tidal wave of flesh, a
veritable mastodon, who so loved his country that he owned half of it. But it
was his son, Francisco Solano Lopez, who took the biscuit: wishing to be the
Napoleon of South America, he started a war against Brazil, Argentina and
Uruguay that turned out to be among the most terrible in human history. By the
time it ended, in 1870, 95 per cent of the male population was dead, and for
many years afterwards Paraguay was known as the Land of Women. Oddly enough,
Lopez is regarded as a national hero. With heroes like him, what country would
need traitors?
