Penelope Kruz Sančez (Penelope Cruz Sanchez) rođena je u Madridu 28. aprila 1974. godine. Od detinjstva je volela igru i ples, a pohađala je i posebne škole za ples. Svoj talenat je pokazala na različitim takmičenjima na kojima je dobila mnoštvo nagrada. Srednju školu je napustila da bi se posvetila glumi i plesu.

Svoje prve uloge imala je u španskim filmovima, a zapažene uloge dobila je u nekoliko filmova Pedra Almodovara. Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born on April 28, 1974 in Madrid, Spain to Eduardo (an auto mechanic) and Encarna (a hairdresser). Her name originated from one of her parents' favorite songs titled "Penelope" by musical artist Joan Manuel Serrat. Penelope Cruz has a sister Mónica and a brother Eduardo and is the eldest of the three children. Her sister Mónica Cruz closely resembles her and their similarity was exploited for some Spanish TV ads. In the 2000s, Mónica left her dancing career and achieved fame on her own in the youth-oriented TV series "Un Paso Adelante". Her brother Eduardo is currently a student. Penelope's nickname is Pe which her friends like to call her.

Even as a toddler she was already a compulsive performer, reenacting TV commercials for her family's amusement. Penelope started taking acting lessons at the tender age of 5 and later went on to train in classical ballet at Spain's National Conservatory in Madrid for 9 years. In addition, she spent four years of dance performance with several dance courses at the Cristina Rota School in New York, three years of Spanish ballet from Ángela Garrido, and Jazz Dance courses with Raúl Caballero.

Cruz completed 2o B.U.P. (2nd year of secondary school), but dropped out of school at the age of 15 after she bested more than 300 other girls at a talent agency audition. The resulting contract landed her an agent plus several roles in Spanish TV shows and music videos, which in turn paved the way for a career on the big screen. She had two guest roles on "Ella y él", one episode directed by Jaime Chávarri for the tv program "Serie Rosa" and in "Crónicas Urbanas" directed by Ricardo Palacios for tv. She was a TV presenter for the teen-oriented program "La Quinta Marcha" in collaboration with Jesús Vázquez. She also supplemented her work as an aspiring young actress with modeling assignments. She was intent on becoming a successful actress and abandoned her secondary schooling in favor of additional training in theater and dance.

She was chosen to act in the pop video of the song of Meccano "The force of the destiny", the most famous spanish group from 1980-90. Penelope and Nacho Cano (member of the group) dated for 6 years after the initial production of the video and are still friends to this day. He is the founder of Sabera Foundation in which she collaborated with him to save children from the streets of Calcutta. Two documentary programs have already been made for Spanish TV on this project and one is being prepared in English for the US market.

Cruz made her movie debut in (1991) "El Laberinto Griego" (The Greek Labyrinth), then appeared briefly in the Timothy Dalton thriller (1992) (TV), Framed. Her revelation in Cinema took place in 1992 with her third film, the Oscar-winning "Belle époque", in which she played one of four sisters vying for the love of a handsome army deserter. The film also garnered several Goyas, the Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards. "Ham Ham" of Bigas Luna, a hypersexual hit in her native Spain transformed her into a national fantasy. She was 17. She was suddenly a star and she was scared. "I had a strong rejection of anything sexual or sensual for a while. I cut my hair very, very short. I didn't do any love scenes, not even kisses, for many years." For her performance in "The Girl of Your Dreams" she received the Goya for the best actress (the Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards). Previously she had been nominated by her role in "Ham Ham".

Her resume continued to grow by three or four films each year, and soon Cruz was a leading lady of Spanish cinema. She has been well recognized in Spain since the early '90s, but the fetchingly sexy actress has only started in recent years to make a splash on this side of the earth. People magazine declared her one of their "50 most beautiful people of 2000".

Cruz made a few more forays into English-language film (an example is "The Hi-Lo Country"), but her definitive throwing worldwide was thanks to her participation in the Almodóvar's successful movie "All about my mother", in which she played an unchaste but well-meaning nun. Her next big project was "Woman on Top" (2000), an American comedy about a chef with bewitching culinary skills and a severe case of motion sickness. While in the US, she also signed up to star opposite Johnny Depp in the drug-trafficking drama "Blow" (2001) and opposite Matt Damon in Billy Bob Thornton's "All the Pretty Horses" (2000), and later with Nicholas Cage in "Captain Corellis Mandolin" as well as Tom Cruise in "Vanilla Sky", the remake of the Spanish film "Abre los ojos".

She has always been an animal lover and has a cat that she calls Aitana, named after one of her best friends, Aitana Sanchez Gijon (Spanish actress who performed with Keanu Reeves in "A Walk On The Clouds"). She is also the person who gave her the cat. Her friends include Goya Toledo (actress, "Amores perros") who was also a student at the Christina Rota academy with Cruz, Pedro Almodóval, Fernando Trueba, and Salma Hayek. She neither smokes, nor drinks and she rarely goes out to parties. She likes to eat Japanese food and her favorite drink is Coca Cola. According to sources, Penelope is believed to be a vegetarian.

Cruz had been linked romantically with Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage, and Tom Cruise. She recently ended her two year-relationship with "Sahara" co-star Matthew McConaughey.

Na ceremoniji dodele „evropskih oskara" u Varšavi u subotu uveče, Evropska filmska akademija je nagradu za najboljeg evropskog reditelja 2006. uručila španskom reditelju Pedru Almodovaru za ostvarenje „Volver".
