Samsung Committed to Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, Bada



Despite a higher up confirming that Samsung will no longer support Symbian once the new Samsung Bada operating system launches, it looks like the company may have jumped the gun on that one. Now, Samsung is issuing a statement to a different tune, stating that it and the Symbian Foundation have not parted ways yet. Samsung will still be launching phones on multiple operating systems, including Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, and the forthcoming Bada OS, which is internally developed by the company.

The official statement from Samsung is as follows:

Samsung is an initial member of Symbian Foundation and continues to cooperate with Symbian Foundation. At the same time, Samsung supports various existing open operating systems including Symbian, Linux, Android, and Windows Mobile. To provide more choices to meet consumers' many different tastes and preferences, we will continue our 'multi-OS' strategy. Our policy is to provide what consumers want when they need.

Symbian Death Nearing? Nokia to Jump Ship to Maemo?



After a Samsung executive told reporters that the company will not support Symbian, leading the Korean manufacturer to quickly issue a retraction, it looks like things are actually not so rosy with the Nokia-led platform that has turned open source recently. The Maemo operating system marketing team was a biut loose-lipped at a recent Nokia N900 London event and told attendees that Nokia would make a shift from S60 to Maemo.

Maemo is still an amerging platform which is based on Linux, and offers a great user experience. However, at this point, the lack of Nokia services, applications, and the growing bug list have made the platform more of an enthusiast's choise due to its Linux customizability.

The strategy for Nokis is then to sell its flagship N series devices with both operating systems and have an N series S60 and N series Maemo devices for prosumers and consumers. The complete transition is speculated to be completed by 2012.

All these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt as it does not originate from Nokia, rather from a marketing person behind the Maemo team from Nokia, who may be partial to his platform.

Do kraja godine Firefox i na telefonima

Kompanija Mozilla je potvrdila da planira da predstavi mobilnu verziju svog čuvenog Firefox pretraživača, čije prvo izdanje se očekuje do kraja tekuće godine.



RC (release candidate) verzija ovog pretraživača namenjenog mobilnim telefonima pojaviće se do 20. decembra i to na uređaju Nokia N900. Firefox će raditi na Linux Maemo platformi kompanije Nokia.

Uređaj će biti u stanju da procesuira do 30 Firefox ekstenzija istovremeno, ali će se od korisnika zahtevati da pretraživač preuzme sa interneta jer neće biti preinstaliran na telefonu.

Planiraju se mobilne verzije Firefoxa i za Windows Mobile, kao i Google Android platforme.

U kompaniji Mozilla veruju da će ovaj pretraživač uspeti da zauzme značajno mesto na tržištu.

Synaptics Fuse touchscreen phone concept unveiled

Synaptics has teamed up with a handful of companies (Texas Instruments, Immersion, TheAlloy and The Astonishing Tribe) to announce a new mobile phone concept called Fuse.

The Synaptics Fuse is the first concept phone to integrate multiple interface technologies: haptic feedback, multi-touch, 3D graphics, as well as “force, grip, and proximity sensing.”

The concept extends the touch sensitivity beyond the display, as the phone features capacitive touch sensors on the sides (which let you pan and scroll), and a touch panel on the back, which provides 2D navigation.

Based on a Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 processor, the Fuse uses Synaptics’ ClearPad, TouchButtons and NavPoint technologies to provide features like two-finger input and high-resolution finger input – for precise pointing and navigation.





“The best touch experience requires the expertise and collaboration of ecosystem leaders to optimize what the user sees and feels. The improved sensory experience of Fuse will drive handset innovation to evolve, taking the current generation of touch-based interaction to the next level of human-device interaction,” declared Gopal Garg, senior vice president of Synaptics’ handheld business unit and corporate marketing.

Synaptics will demonstrate the Fuse during CES 2010 in Las Vegas, as well as durning Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona.

Samsung has just announced a brand spanking new mobile operating system named “Bada”, which is Korean for ocean. They didn’t mention a single feature that makes it stand out, nor did they include screenshots. Bada will be fully unveiled in December at an event in the UK. In a world where we have Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile available for handset manufactures to use, and to customize, to their heart’s content, Samsung has decided that neither of those three solutions is good enough. Don’t forget that Samsung already does make Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile devices. This company is starting to feel like an unemployed degenerate who goes to clown college to learn how to juggle just so he can pay for his whiskey habit. It’s the fifth week of class, and he mastered juggling 3 balls, but now he wants to jump to 4 for some strange reason. Moral of the story: I hate clowns, and companies that launch press releases filled with fluff.

Update: And in case you’re wondering, Samsung expects the first Bada powered device to launch in 1H 2010, with more models expected in 2H10. Bada will have an application store, launching in 1H10, and will expand to over 30 countries by the end of 2010.
