French train breaks world record

Apr. 3 - The TGV train in France has succeeded in breaking the record for the world's fastest train, reaching a speed of 574.8 km/h.

The record attempt took place on a newly built high-speed track between Paris and Strasbourg in eastern France which is due to open in June.

The previous French speed record, set in 1990, was 515.3 kilometres per hour.

Close rivals for the high-speed train record come in the form of the ICE train by Siemens, which reached 357 kilometres per hour in September 2006 and the Shinkansen Bullet Train of Japan, which reached 443 kilometre per hour.

In Japan, magnetic levitation (maglev) trains have been able to reach a speed of 580 kilometres per hour, however the running costs of such trains are higher than that of trains such as the TGV .

France, Germany, Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan are large markets for highspeed trains, but Argentina, Brazil, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are also entering the fray.

The shorter travel times make the trains competitive with air links, while environmental considerations work in favour of the train.
