Bachem Ba 349


Bachem Ba 349 Natter (Adder) was a World War II era German experimental rocket-powered interceptor aircraft which was to be used in a very similar way as surface-to-air missiles. The pilot's primary mission was to aim the aircraft at its target bomber and fire its armament of rockets, with the majority of the flight to the bombers being radio controlled from the ground, and landing under a parachute.

The Bachem Ba 349 Natter (Viper), a semi-expendable, vertically-launched, piloted missile, was one of the several desperate yet ingenious measures improvised to defend the German skies. The small interceptor was designed by a team headed by Erich Bachem. The Ba 349 was built using bonded and screwed wooden parts, a simple metal structure and armored cockpit. The heart and soul of the aircraft was of course the internal Walter 109-509A-2 liquid fuel rocket (the same as that of the Messerschmitt Me 163. Four external Schmidding rockets were used for launching boost, providing a combined thrust of 4,800kg for 10 seconds before they were jettisoned. Bachem proposed that, as American bombers approached their target, the Ba 349 would be sent soaring vertically through the formation. The pilot would pick one bomber, fire his whole batch of twenty-four 73mm Hs 217 Fцhn (Storm) unguided rockets, use the remaining thrust to climb higher past the bombers and turn back for a ramming attack. Supposedly the pilot could trigger a mechanism to release his seat from the fuselage with the rocket motor right before impact.
          The "simple" ejection system, however, did not work and the impractical ramming proposal was dropped. The only parts that were saved were the pilot and the rocket motor for re-use. In October 1944 pilotless tests from near-vertical ramp and piloted gliding flights were started. On 28 February 1945 the first manned flight was attempted, resulting in the death of test pilot Oberleutnant Lothar Siebert when the cockpit canopy flew off, and the Ba 349 crashed. Ten Ba 349s were stationed at Kirchheim, but the advancing American forces overran the launch sites before any bombers could be intercepted.

 In Germany, in late 1943 to early 1944, high altitude bombing from the Americans and British was gradually destroying the industrial might of the Third Reich,  and unless something was done to stop the bombing, the entire ability of Germant to wage war would be cut off.  Already short of critical materiel such as steel, oil, and machinery, the Bachem Werk company under took to build a bomber destroyer that used only a very limited amount of scarce items. Apart from the fuel tanks and wing mainspar, everything used to build the Natter (Adder) was non-essential products, most of this being wood. In fact, the entire fuselage, tail, and wings were wooden, and the only steel used was for the pilot armor and fuel tanks.
    The Natter was rocket propelled, using two highly volatile fuels that would "explode if you looked at it crosseyed." This fuel was the infamous mixture of T-stoff and C-stoff, so incredibly explosive that the two would combust if they even made contact with the other.  At first, the only tests given to the nine prototypes were gliding tests, being released from an He111 bomber at 18,000 feet. Surprisingly, the Natter had splendid stability, despite the shortness of the wings. A pilotless launching with the rocket engine as propulsion was completed successfully on Dec. 22, 1944, and in Feb. 1945, the first pilot took the Natter up for a flight. The test pilot did not survive.
     This did not slow the development, and more inexperienced pilots were strapped into the Ba 349 and launched off into the sky,  the lucky ones managing to survive the launch. Even more dangerous was the method of 'landing.' The Natter was not be be landed, rather the pilot would eject from the cockpit from either an ejection seat, or more often, a simple parachute.  Then the rocket half of the machine would break off from the nose and it too would parachute down for reuse.
     Perhaps even more frightening was the armament of this bizarre craft. Twenty four 55-mm unguided rockets were mounted in the nose of the Natter and were to be fired into a group of bombers. Although one hit from one of these rockets would probably bring down the bomber,  just launching them from the Natter would be dangerous enough.  A simple ring sight was mounted on the nose of the Ba 349 for aiming. Clearly it can be seen that these rockets were not supposed to be accurate.
     In April of 1945 nine of the 36 Natters that had then been completed were set up to await the next wave of Allied bombers, but US ground troops suddenly attacked and the Germans themselves destroyed the Natters to keep them from falling into Allied hands. The Natter subsequently never saw action.

hvala momci Smile Smile
prvi put sam se posebno zainteresovao za Bachem Ba 349 tokom tog istog wolfensteina Smile
posto sam zaljubljenik u avijaciju, i ako Bog da uskoro sportski pilot,  morao sam da saznam da li je cudna letelica iz jedne od misija fikcija programera ili istorijska cinjenica. i tako....... moram reci da su je verno oslikali u igri Smile

Ono sto bih morao da kazem, jer se ovaj forum bavi i industrijom, je da je za proizvodnju Natera [to znaci belouska] bilo potrebno samo 60 sati!!!

Ono sto bih morao da kazem, jer se ovaj forum bavi i industrijom, je da je za proizvodnju Natera [to znaci belouska] bilo potrebno samo 60 sati!!!

to je dosta brzo za letelicu koja bi u kombinaciji vecih brojeva sa iskusnijim pilotima mogla, ako nista drugo da nanese velike gubitke saveznickim bombarderima. mada.... dok se spusta sa padobranom on je vise nego laka meta- onako, na izvolite Smile
