THE BIRTH OF A CLUB

1919, the merger of 5 separate entities
The Association Sportive de Monaco Football was founded on the 1st August, 1919 by the merger of five entities from the Principality of Monaco and from Beausoleil.   Out of these five entities, Herculis, was formed in 1903 to play football; it had the honour of taking part in the very first French Cup in 1917.   The Club is one of the oldest members of the French Football Federation, affiliated with the number 91.
As for the multiple sports club, the Association Sportive de Monaco, this was founded on the 23rd August, 1924.

AS Monaco Football was then absorbed by the latter and became the football section of the enlarged Monegasque sporting club.

First league match in 1924
It was in the 1924 - 25 season that ASM played its first match in the South-Eastern League.   They rapidly got promoted to the group B in the next level of the South-Eastern League but, although finishing on top of the table, were relegated following a complaint (which was also justified).   Not discouraged by this, the Club got back to work and won the South-Eastern championship.

FIRST STEPS INTO PROFESSIONALISM

First victory over near neighbours, Nice
The first match that AS Monaco played as a professional club was in the Southern Group, of Division II of the French championship.   It took place on Sunday 3rd September, 1933, against the Football Athletic Club in Nice, and finished with a 3-2 victory for Monaco.   However, the result was subsequently not counted as, later in the season, Nice withdrew from the championship.
The first official victory for the Club was therefore that against the Football Club de Lyon, which the Red and Whites won 5-1.   The team continued to display some good performances and looked forward to being promoted to the French First Division.

However, before that could happen there was a match against AS St.   Etienne, which was level with Monaco on points, for a place in the play-offs, with the loser not qualifying for them.   Alas, Monaco lost 4-2, so no first division this time.   And there was no professional championship the following season either, because, at the end of the season, the Club was in financial difficulties and rejoined the ranks of the amateur championship.   Effectively starting from scratch again.  .  .

Inauguration of the Louis II Stadium
But AS Monaco continued to win several regional trophies.   On 23rd April, 1939, the Louis II Stadium was inaugurated in the district of Fontvieille and the team could look forward to playing in a real football stadium.

WARTIME

The war unfortunately interrupted this progress and the national competitions became truncated because of the partition of the country.   During the war, ASM won the championship of Provence and reached the quarter-final stage of the French Cup in the 1941 - 42 season.

In 1947 - 48 strong, with the war over, ASM won the South-East regional championship.   A wind of change was blowing over AS Monaco.

Return to the professional ranks
1948 saw the return of the Club to the professional championship, joining the ranks of the Second Division.   On 22nd August 1948, Monaco played its first match in this new era, away to RC Lens, although lost 3-0.   The first goal for AS Monaco in this new professional championship came the week after from Musso during the home game with Amiens.

And the first victory came a short time later against Lyon, with a comfortable margin of 5-1.   At the end of the season, Prince Rainier III succeeded his grand-father Prince Louis II.   This was an extremely important event, both for the Principality and the Club, since, from that moment on, the Club has had the unwavering support of the Royal Family.   However, the first team's results were much less brilliant.   The team languished in the lower ranks of the Second Division.

THE BUILDING YEARS

The start of the 1950s would see ASM playing a major role on the national stage.   The Red & Whites seemed ready for the jump into the First Division, although continued to miss out.

First promotion to the First Division
For the season 1952 - 1953, the ASM had a top quality squad, and this, coupled with a sizeable budget (36 million old francs), gave rise to hopes of doing great things.   And the end of the season saw the Club promoted to the First Division for the first time in its history, after just five seasons of its new professional existence.

On Sunday 23rd August 1953, ASM played its first official match in the First Division, against Toulouse FC.   The Red & Whites unfortunately started their campaign in the elite with a defeat and the first point was obtained the following week against AS St.   Etienne.   The Club had to wait for the fifth match, against Le Havre AC, for its first win, achieved fairly easily, with a score of 4-1.   The end of the season found the Monegasques in the middle of the table, with football in the Principality starting to be recognised nationally.

The following season, however, was hardly brilliant.   Even with a forward line comprising, among others, de Bruey, Stopyra and Skiba, the Club just avoided relegation and managed to keep its place among the elite.

Encouraging recruitment
For the season 1955 - 56, management made a series of signings that gave the team real hope of finally lifting a trophy.   In particular, with Ben Tifour, Bellot and Bahl now at the Club, the level of play had indeed improved and after a really good season, ASM found itself on the first rung of the national podium by finishing in third place.

In 1956 - 57, the Red & Whites recruited Raymond Kaelbel, a tough defender from Alsace, but it was another season without a trophy.   Nevertheless, they finished fifth in the League and their name was being talked about everywhere.

With the 1957 - 58 season, Biancheri, Hidalgo, Roy, among others, joined the Club and the team started to challenge the best teams in France.   Unfortunately, the war in Algeria was to deprive the Club of some of its most brilliant North African players, who left to fight.   Thus, Bekhloufi, Boubakeur, Chabri, Ben Tifour and Zitouni would be absent for many months.   Once again, though, ASM finished third in the League and got to the semi-final stage of the French Cup, losing at that stage to Nîmes Olympique (2-1).

In 1958 - 59, Lucien Leduc joined the Club as coach.   "It was certainly Leduc who had a new vision for AS Monaco", said Raymond Kaelbel.   With the arrival of Djibrill, Carlier and Garofalo, the image of the club could only be improved.   But unfortunately they only had a poor season, finishing in the middle of the table.

First French Cup Win
In 1959 - 60, ASM won its first national trophy, the French Cup, beating AS St.   Etienne 4-2 in the final at Stade Colombes.   The delight on the face of Raymond Kaelbel receiving the Cup from Prince Rainier was an unforgettable picture! Thousands waited to cheer the players in the Principality.   Starting from Nice, hordes of Monegasque supporters waved the red and white flag.   The town, decorated and bedecked with flowers for the occasion, witnessed a triumphal parade, before the players spent a long time at the reception organised in the Prince's Palace.   This was the year that the real Odyssey of the club started.

THE CLUB'S REVIVAL

French Champions for the first time
It was in the 1960 - 61 season that AS Monaco first started wearing the mythical red and white diagonal striped strip suggested by Princess Grace.   And this was the season which saw ASM become French Champions for the first time.   In addition, they added another trophy that they had not yet won - the Drago Cup.   So now the Club would be playing on the biggest stage in Europe against the best in European football, with now international recognition to crown their achievements on a national scale.

So in 1961 - 62, AS Monaco took part for the first time in its history in a European Cup competition.   Despite Garofalo being in excellent form, ASM were twice beaten by Glasgow Rangers 3-2.   So, nothing for the professionals, and it was left to the Club's Espoirs team to fill the trophy cabinet, by winning the Gambardella Cup, with a 2-1 win over Metz.

League and Cup Doublet
1962 - 63 is the Club's "Annus Mirabilis".   This was the season when ASM achieved its first (and, to date, only) League and Cup double.   The team was little changed from the previous season, with only Garafolo, Roy and Ludo having left.

The squad is engraved in the memories of those who were there: Artélésa, Biancheri, Carlier, Casolari, Cossou, Courtin, Djibrill, Douis, Forcherio, Hernandez, Hess, Hidalgo, Taberner, Théo and Thomas, not forgetting Girod, Péretti and Sottimano, all in the capable hands of Lucien Leduc.   In addition, the team lifted the Teresa-Herrera Trophy, one of the most reputed tournaments in the world, beating Vasco de Gama in the final.   Unfortunately, at the end of the season, the President, coach and several senior players all left the Club.

The years that followed were indeed less glorious.   Despite being runners-up in 1963 - 64, the team generally finished in the bottom half of the table for quite some years.   In the European Cup, ASM pulled off a real exploit by beating AEK Athens 7-2, before being eliminated in the next round by the great Inter Milan, which went on to win the competition.   The Club was invited to play in tournaments around the world in Brazil, in Germany, in Italy, in Mexico, in Belgium, and the Netherlands.

However, this was not enough to prevent the Club, sixteen years after leaving it, from dropping back down into the Second Division in 1969.   Although this was only for two years.

ARRIVAL OF DELIO ONNIS

Indeed, in 1971, the Monegasques once again won promotion without having changed their team very much.   Jean Petit had joined the squad in 1969.   Unfortunately, ASM were immediately relegated to the Second Division that year, spending another two years there before the Principality once again saw its team in the elite.

First Division record goal-scorer
In 1973, Delio Onnis, who was to hold the record for the number of goals scored in the First Division, arrived in the Principality.   He enabled ASM to reach the French Cup final against St.   Etienne, but they unfortunately lost 2-1.   The Club survived in the First Division and, because St.   Etienne was the League champions, the Monegasques qualified for the Cup Winners' Cup.   Such good results, however, actually gave the team false hopes.  .  .

At the end of the 1976 season, the Red & Whites, now with a new young President, Jean-Louis Campora, were relegated once more.   It was then that Lucien Leduc, the coach when AS Monaco achieved its only League and Cup double, decided to return to the Club.   He became the supervisor of ASM and ensured close cooperation between the professional group and the Academy, set up in 1975 and run by Gérard Banide.

French Champions again
In 1977 - 78, the Club was again promoted, thanks largely to Delio Onnis.   In fact, this was an historic year, as the Club became French champions in the same year as it was promoted.   A golden era, comprising Jean-Luc Ettori, Vannucci, Gardon, Courbis, Vitalis, Heriberto, Correa, Moizan, Noguès, Chaussin, Dalger, Onnis, Rouquette and François.   This was the birth of the AS Monaco of modern times.

After Lucien Leduc left and Gérard Banide took over as coach, ASM won the French Cup, for the third time, in 1979 - 80.   Youngsters, such as Bijotat, Ricort, Couriol and others who had progressed from the Academy, joined the professionals.   Unfortunately, in the European Cup, ASM was very inconsistent and failed to progress beyond the second round.   It is worth noting that Delio Onnis, who had scored 299 goals in the First Division, of which 223 were for Monaco, left the Club at this time.

THE MODERN AS MONACO IS BORN

The 1981 - 82 season saw ASM become French champions for the fourth time, with the help of a young player who had come through the Academy, Manuel Amoros.   The following few years were satisfactory, with a sixth place in 1982 - 83, and a 1983 - 84 season which could have seen the second League and Cup double for the Club.   The Red & Whites were equal on points at the top of the table, but with a poorer goal difference, and were beaten in the Cup Final by Metz.

Inauguration of the new Louis II Stadium
The 1984 - 85 season saw the inauguration of the new Louis II Stadium.   An architectural gem with a capacity of 20,000 (reduced to an all-seated 18,523 today) which houses, in addition to the football pitch, an athletics track, a 3,000 capacity multi-sports hall, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, the ASM offices, as well as an American University and several office suites.   That year, ASM finished third in the league and won the French Cup by beating Paris-St-Germain in the final 1-0.

The following seasons were fairly poor, with the only really notable event being the arrival of Arsène Wenger as head coach in 1987.   With that, the modern AS Monaco started to emerge.

Quarter finals of the European Cup
The 1987 - 88 season was dominated by the Red & Whites reinforced by two English players who are still talked about today - Glenn Hoddle and Mark Hateley.   The team went on to become French champions for the fifth time.

They would remain in the limelight for a number of years, with a third place in the League and a Cup final the following year - and, above all, getting to the European Cup quarter finals for the first time.   It was also in this season that George Weah arrived at the Club.   The following year, ASM reached the semi-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup losing to the Italians from Sampdoria Genoa.   It was now fair to say that Monaco had arrived on the European scene.

THE WENGER ERA

In 1990 - 91, AS Monaco finished runners-up in the League, but beat Marseille in the Cup Final, to secure the tenth major title in the Club's history.

The W1991 - 92 season would be both the saddest and the most successful for the Club.   The Club qualified for the final of both the French Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup.   However, the Cup final was never played because of the tragic events in Furiani, on the eve of the European final.   ASM lost this 2-0 without really getting into the game, while the French Cup final never happened and the team finished second in the League behind Marseille.   It was an exceptional season, but there was nothing to show for it in terms of trophies.

Participation in the Champions League
Monaco continued to hover around the top of the League, and even played in the Champions League in 1993, replacing Marseille, which saw itself relegated to the Second Division.   ASM reached the semi-final stage against the great AC Milan.   The Monegasques seemed tired and, despite having players such as Djorkaëff, Thuram, Petit, Klinsmann, Scifo, etc.   in the team, could only finish ninth in the League.

It was during this season that Jean-Luc Ettori, holder of the record for the number of games played in the First Division, played his 602nd and last game in the Monaco shirt.   At the end of the following season, Arsène Wenger resigned as first team coach after seven very successful years with the Club.

Tigana, new club coach
After Gérard Banide took the Club into the UEFA Cup, Jean Tigana arrived to take over.   The 1996 - 97 season coincided with the 700th anniversary celebrations of the Grimaldi dynasty in the Principality, and ASM added the icing on the cake by winning the League title for the 6th time, 9 years after the first.   The team's excellent run in the UEFA Cup was finally ended by Inter Milan at the semi-final stage.   The team would be one of the finest ever assembled at the Club with the likes of Barthez, Petit, Benarbia, Henry, Anderson, Ikpeba, etc.   It was an exceptional season from all points of view, and the following one was almost as good.   Despite some significant departures - Sonny Anderson, Emanuel Petit, Gilles Grimandi - ASM finished fourth in the League and reached the semi-final of the Champions League, beating Manchester United in the quarter-final on the way.   But yet again the Italians - this time Juventus - prevented Monaco from getting to the final.   A 4-1 defeat for Monaco in Turin, and a 3-2 victory at home.   But Monaco was clearly firmly established among the European greats.

The 1998 - 1999 season was less successful - despite finishing third in the League.

7th league title
1999 - 2000 was another memorable season.   With some exceptional players in the team such as Fabien Barthez, Rafael Marquez, Sabri Lamouchi, Marcelo Gallardo, David Trezeguet, Marco Simone, etc.  , Monaco took the League title for the final championship of the 2nd millennium, and the 7th time in its history.   The Club also registered the highest number of goals and in David Trezeguet the leading passer and second highest goal scorer in the League.

FROM EUROPE TO SELF-DOUBT

ASM, which, from this moment had a new name, the Association Sportive de Monaco Football Club SA, now had a couple of less-glorious seasons after the departure of a large number of senior players.   Indeed the Club did not survive the first round of the Champions League and, worse, finished only 12th in the League.   There was a ray of hope, nonetheless, as the Club reached the final of the League Cup, losing 2-1 to Lyon after extra time.

Didier Deschamps named as coach
The following season was supposed to be one of rebuilding.   Didier Deschamps was appointed coach, replacing Claude Puel, and high-class players such as Panucci, Bierhoff, Jugovic and others arrived in the Principality.   However, the season proved one of the worst in recent times, the Club finishing only 15th in the League.   There was nothing to suggest that ASM FC would bounce back so quickly.

In 2002-2003, after a sluggish start, the Red & Whites were runners-up in the League and won the League Cup in the Stade de France in front of a crowd of 80,000 fans.   Shabani Nonda was the top goal scorer, Jérôme Rothen the best passer, and a number of younger players, such as Squillaci and Evra were already being tipped as future internationals.   So AS Monaco FC won another trophy, three years after the last one, and earned the right to enter the Champions League.

On 30th June, 2003, after twenty eight years as head of AS Monaco FC, Dr.   Jean-Louis Campora stepped down, to be replaced by Mr.   Pierre Svara, a member of the Board of Directors since 2003.   The Association Sportive de Monaco Football Club then entered a new era.   The first half of the 2003-2004 season saw the Red & Whites leading the Championship at Christmas and qualified for the knock-out stages of the Champions League, having met the following in the pool stage: AEK Athens, PSV Eindhoven and Deportivo La Coruña.

Champions League runner-up
The run in the Champions League was not without its consequences in the League.   Having spent three quarters of the season on top, AS Monaco FC finished a tired third at the end of the season.   The 2003-2004 season enabled the group to share some rare sporting moments, with suspense and genuine exploits taking turns to excite the emotions of players and public alike.   AS Monaco FC reached the final of the European Champions League by beating successively, Locomotive Moscow, Real Madrid and Chelsea, but sadly the final against FC Porto ended in defeat 0-3.

On 30th June, 2004, Mr.   Michel Pastor, a major Monegasque businessman, became the new Club President, the one-year mandate granted to Mr.   Pierre Svara on 30th June, 2003 having come to an end.   In the 2004-2005 season, AS Monaco FC performed respectably in the national competitions.   Third in the League behind Lyon and Lille, the team, with new recruits Saciola, Kallon and Chevanton went as far the semi-finals in both Cup competitions.   On the European scene, the Club topped its pool in the Champions League which also contained Liverpool the eventual winners, but failed to beat PSV Eindhoven in the first knock-out match.

Start of the decline
The following few years could best be termed chaotic.   An early exit from the Champions League and a sluggish start to the League program meant that Didier Deschamps left the Club.   The Italian Francesco Guidolin took over but failed to instil any consistency.   ASM FC suffered defeats in the semi-final of the League Cup, and in the early knock-out stages of the UEFA Cup, while finishing 10th in the League.   It was time for some big changes in the running of the Club.

For the 2006-2007 season, Michel Pastor appointed Marc Keller as Executive Director of the Club.   The Romanian Laszlo Bölöni took over the first team soon afterwards, but was himself rapidly replaced by Laurent Banide, the son of Gérard and a trainer/teacher at the Club for the previous ten years.   He managed to instil confidence after a disastrous start for the Red & Whites, and generally succeeded in the role.   A new era got underway at the start of the 2007-2008 season, with the arrival of the Brazilian, Gomes Raymundo Ricardo as general manager.

For a couple of seasons, the Red & Whites blew hot and cold, finishing in mid-table.   However, there was satisfaction concerning the Academy, since the reserve team led by Frédéric Barilaro topped the professional reserves championship table.

The following season several players from the Academy (Mollo, Nkoulou, Mongongu, Nimani, and Ruffier) became regulars in the first team.   In the management team, Jérôme de Bontin, in place for less than a year, was replaced as President on 31st March, 2009 by Etienne Franzi.

This was followed by the return of Marc Keller as Executive director and the arrival of Guy Lacombe as coach.   With a nucleus of promising young players and targeted recruitment (return of Nenê, arrival of Puygrenier, Traoré, Eduardo Costa and Coutadeur), AS Monaco FC looked forward to the 2009-2010 season with both optimism and determination.   The Club reached the Cup Final, losing to Paris St.   Germain 0-1 after extra time, and finished in eighth place in the League, the highest position since 2004-2005.
